Description
UNITED STATES katenteoi July 26, 19.74.
VANCE W. MILLS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SKIRT-FASTENER- SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 766,055, dated July 26, 1904.
Application filed December 11, 1903. Serial No. 184,747. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VANCE W. MILLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in clasps or fastening devices for holding ladies skirts or other garments in position; and it consists of a plate provided with oppositelydisposed prongs, one of which is fixed and the other movable, which prongs are adapted to engage and to be disengaged from a waistband, the aforesaid plate being provided with hooks to engage and hold a skirt in the manner hereinafter specified.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my device shown attached to a portion of a waistband with the portion of a skirt shown attached and supported upon one of the hooks, the remainder of the skirt being broken away to show the character of fastening device. Fig. 2 illustrates a plan view of a portion of a Waistband with the fastening device hooked in position. Fig. 3 shows a View similar to Fig. 1 with the skirt removed and the fastening device about to be inserted into the waistband, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the clasp looking at the same from the rear.
Referring to the reference-letters of the drawings, A represents the fastening device, B the waistband, and G the skirt which it is desired to hold in place.
The clasp or fastening device A comprises a sheet-metal plate having formed upon'the face A two upturned hooks a (1,, formed from the plate itself by leaving blank these portions during the formation of opening a a The edges of the plate A are bent downward, forming smooth side walls A and A and the top is likewise bent at A to meet the sides, enabling the device to be more readily grasped by the hand and at the same time imparting to it more strength than could be obtained by a fiat plate. Fastened by the upturned lower prongs w and w.
In adjusting the clasp to the waistband the prong w is first inserted and-pressed forward into the band, as shown in Fig.3,with sufficient pressure to bring the wire W to the extreme left of the slot (0 The prong w is then inserted into the fabric, and by releasing the clasp the tension of the wire will force the prong 10 into the fabric, and the wire will again assume its normal position, as shown in Fig. 1.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
-1. A device for supporting garments comprising a plate provided on its face with hooks and at the top with oppositely-disposed pointed prongs one of said prongs being fixed with respect to said plate and the other capable of lateral movement substantially as specified.
2. A device for supporting garments comprising a plate having hooks formed upon its face, oppositely-disposed prongs arranged at the top of said plate, one of which is guided within the plate and capable of lateral movement, substantially as specified.
3. A device for supporting garments comprising a plate having formed upon its face one or more hooks, a U-shaped wire mounted within the plate having ends arranged in the form of oppositely-disposed prongs, one of said prongs being fixed in position and the other movably guided within a slot in the plate, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VANCE W. MILLS.
