Be it known that I, R/M. Bnooxis, of Wodbnryjn the lcounty'oi Meriwether, und in the State of Georgie., have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Presses; and tio-hereby declarethat the followr ing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the'uccompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon. v

In the annexed drnwings,mnking part of this speciiication, A represents the side, und A A represent the top and bottom portions of a frame, in which my cotton-press is supported. The press stands verticallylin the centre of this frame, and is provided -with a pivot-pin, L, at its bottom, which tits into e suitable socket in the bottom freme-pieo`A. Thescrew H, to which thefollower is attached, passes through the upper cross-piece A', and, together with pivot-L, forms u. centre, about 'whichthebon revolves# B and C represent,thepress-box. The pen'elsot thejower portion C of this box are movable, so that the bale of cotton can be removed afterithas been pressed.

E E represent two metallic straps, which are continuous, sind which pass around the-bcttombosrd D and the crossshead F, near their outer ends, and serveto bind the box together and keep the bottom and cross-hesd from sepan-siting. A l l G G'represent metal pieces,'which are secured upon the ends ot' the cross-head, to protect it und strengthen it. Thess metal pieces have openings in them to receive the ends of the cross-head. They have flanges e e on their'fsides, and 'flanges d d on their tops,'and e groove in theirv outer faces to receive a pin, a. P P represent two metallic straps, which have eyes formed in their outer ends, through which the pins iz e pass, These straps, P P, run lengthwise of the orcss-head, but above it, and over a. metal piece, J, in g'ro'oves or ways in said metal pieces made to recev'e them. I I

H represents the screw of this press, which is made about seven feet long, and about three inches end s 'helf in diameter.

I represents the nut, through which the screw H passes. lThis nut is about twelve inches in length, isy provided with e. ange or collar around its iower end, ismade round above this coller, nearly toits top, but neer its upper end is made square or hexagonal, or other suitable shape, sol that it may be made to enter into o correspondingly-shaped opening in s. metsllicsplate, K, to'prevcnt it from turning. The plate, K, is securedrto the under side of Vthe cross-piece A ofthe frame.- The metal piece Jhos. an opening through it, and fits snugly but not tightly over the round portion'of the nut I, und is .also provided with wings or flanges, through which it is bolted tc the cross-heed F. v

v R and S represent wooden braces, which have their ends couned between straps E E and the sides of the press-box, and which serve to keep or bind the sides of the said box firmly together;

0 O represent cross-bars, confined in the seme mnnner, which confine the movable panels oi the press-box, hut which nre removable at pleasurev for the purpose of allowing the panelsto be taken out.

In using this press, the cotton is first packed intothe box .from its upper end. The press-box is then revolved around end around, the screw remaining stationary in one direction, but moving downward, and causing `the follow-block to press upon the cotton.
