PLUME-LEVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 765,847, dated July 26, 1904.
Application filed June 13, 1904. Serial No. 212,336. (No model.)

Be it known that I, FREDERICK E. KREA'IZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Cloud, in the county of Stearns and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plumb- Levels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in leveling` instruments having weighted pointers for plumb-levels; and its object is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and durable device of this character. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying' drawings, in which- Fig'ure l is a face view of the instrument, secured into an opening in a leveling-board, a portion of which is in section to show its retaining' device. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the instrument on line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a ring used to separate the indicatorplate from its glass cover and form a chamber for the indicatorneedle. Fig'. 4 is a perspective view of a springy wire used to retain the glass cover secured to the casing of the instrument. Fig. 5 is a modification of the leveling-board with the instrument attached thereto.
In said drawings, A represents a portion of the leveling-board, and B the metal casing containing' the operating parts of the device. Said casing is a cup-like cylinder having' the bottom Z), integral with the sides Z2. Said sides are thicker toward the bottom and are provided in the interior with an annular shoulder c about half-way of their depth to receive and support the indicator-plate (Z, which plate constitutes a partition between the inner and the outer chamber. Centrally of the inner chamber there is a shaft c, one end of which is received in a bearing f, formed in the bottom b of the casing or within a boss projectinginwardly from said bottom. The opposite end ofthe shaft c is made to pass loo'sel5T through the plate Z and has rigidly secured to said end the indicator-needle g. To the shaft c is also secured a substantially triangular weight or arm Zz, which has substantially `the whole of its weight on one side of the shaft c and its center-of gravity on a line parallel with the axis of the needle g. To provide a cylindrical chamber for said needle, a thin ring c' of suitable width is provided, one edge of which rests against the face of the plate CZ. Upon the opposite edge of said ring is placed the glass cover Zt', which is retained in contact with the ring c' and locked in position by a spring-wire ring Z, which is sprung into a groove m, formed in the interior of the sides b2 of the cup-like casing B.
The casing is retained secured to the leveling-board A by means of a screw a, the end of which imping'es against said casing. Saidscrew is in engagement with a screw-tapped nipple p, which is driven tight or otherwise secured into the edge of the leveling-board A. The screw n may also be made to engag'e directly with the leveling-board.
In Fig. 5 the leveling device A2 is intended to be made of metal, one edge of which has two short arms g, which partially embrace the casing B, said arms having screws 71,2 passing therethrough.
Having' fully described my invention, I claim- A plumb-level consisting of a levelingboard, a cup-like casing' having a bottom and sides integral therewith, said sides being thicker next to the bottom, having a shoulder c about half-way thereof, an indicator-plate CZ bearing on said shoulder, a ring Z bearing on the plate d, a glass cover, and a spring-wire ring Z, the sides of the casing having' an annular groove m to receive said spring-ring, with the shaft c of the instrument having a weig'hted arm ZL, and an indicator-needle g secured to one end of said shaft, said needle being adapted to rotate within the device in a chamber having for its periphery the ring c', substantially as described.
