VARDIMAN TAYLOR SWEENEY, OF MOUNT WASHINGTON, KENTUCKY.
BARREL-HEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 765,688, dated July 26, 1904.
Application filed February 4, 1904.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VARDIMAN TAYLOR SWEENEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Washington, in the county of Bullitt and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Heads; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved head for barrels, kegs, buckets, hogsheads, boxes, and other vessels; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved head of the class mentioned which is adapted to be adjusted so that it may be readily placed in or removed from a barrel or other vessel.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a barrel-head embodying my improvements, showing the same secured in a barrel. Fig.- 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line a a of Fig. 1.
The head 1 is-here shown as of circular form, adapted for use in a barrel or the like vessel. It may be of any suitable shape, as will be understood, and I do not desire to limit myself in this particular. The head 1 comprises the substantially semicircular sections 2 3 and the connecting-section 4. The latter is disposed on the inner sides of the sections 2 3 and is secured to one of them and slidably related to the other. The sections 2 3 are spaced apart, so that theymay be moved toward or from each other to adapt them to be fitted to or removed from a barrel or other vessel.
The sections 2 3 are provided in their straight edges, which are opposed to each other, with recesses 5 of suitable width and length. In
the said recesses are secured stirrups 6. In the outer ends of the stirrups are secured nuts 7, the bores of which are oppositely threaded. Adj usting-screws 8 are employed to connect the sections 2 3 together.
The opposite Serial No. 192,001. (No model.)
end portions of the said adjusting-screws are provided with right and left hand screwthreads which engage the correspondinglythreaded bores of the nuts 7 and it will be understood that by turning the said adjusting-screws the same, in coaction with the nuts and the stirrups, will serve to move the sections 2 3 of the head together, according to the direction in which the screws are turned. To enable the latter to be thus readily turned, I provide them with openings 9, in which a suitable implement, such as abrad-awl, may be inserted.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An adjustable head of the class described, comprising a pair of sections, movable toward and from each other and having recesses in their opposing sides, a connecting-section to cover the space between the first-mentioned sections, secured to one of them and slidably related to the other, stirrups secured in the recesses in the opposing sides of the firstmentioned sections, nuts secured to the said stirrups, and right and left hand adjustingscrews connecting the first mentioned sections together and engaging correspondinglythreaded openings in the nuts, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
