WATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 764,934, dated July 12, 1904;. Application filed September 3, 1903. Serial No. 171,775. (No model) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS EUGENE FAvRE, manufacturer, of Cormoret, Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Watches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved escapement for watches that will operate with great precision for indicating the dead second; and for this purpose the invention consists of a watch-escapement comprising two or more escapement-wheels secured on a shaft with their teeth in alternatnotched disks each arranged to engage one of the escapement-wheels and to engage them in alternation; and the invention further com prises a stud driven from the mainspring and having a barrel loose thereon, a spiral spring in the barrel having one end secured to said stud and having its other end bearing on the inner beveled wall of the barrel, a gear on said barrel, and a pinion meshing with said gear and having said disks secured thereon; and the invention further comprises the novel details of construction and arrangement, as hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved watch-movement. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view drawn on alarger scale. Fig. 3 is a side elevation partly in see- Fig. 4H is a plan View of a modification, and Fig. 5 is a plan View of another modification.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, a is the shaft of a pinion similar to the one of the third wheel and gearing, like it, with the second wheel 6. On the shaft (0 is loosely mounted the hub b of a barrel Z), having a beveled rim, a spiral spring cl, having one end secured to a nut 0, fast on the end of the shaft (0, the spring being coiled inside the barrel 6, with its outer end frictionally engaging the inner beveled rim of the barrel. The shaft a, with its nut 0, is continuously rotated by the second wheel 6; but when the barrel 6 is held 1ng series and a corresponding number of from moving by the escapement the spring is put under tension. The toothed periphery of the barrel 6 gears with a pinion f, on whose shaft are secured two superposed toothed wheels, with their teeth f and f alternating, as shown in Fig. 3. On the shaft of the usual escapement h are two adjacent notched disks 9 and 9 arranged with the notches alternating and which engage the toothed wheels, respectively, in alternation.
The operation is as follows: The shaft (0 is rotated continuously from the mainspring, while the double escapement-teethf f are alternately engaged with and disengaged from the two disks g and g which will put the spiral spring (Z first under tension during each rest of the said double wheel, and then the latter will make a rapid movement until the next tooth is engaged. This will produce a corresponding quick movement of the gear '11, that drives the seconds-hand vi", marking the dead seconds.
In the modification shown in Fig. i the notched plate g is carried by a separate shaft g which gears with a supplementary pinion gearing with the third-wheel movement. In this form the combined range of the teeth of these disks make a tooth-range similar to that shown in Fig. 2, the notches engaging the respective teeth f and f in alternation and producing the same effect on the seconds-hand as in the former construction.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5 there are three superposed notched wheels f f f, with their teeth alternating, and which ongage three toothed disks g 9 Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a watch-movement, the combination, with a shaft driven from the mainspring, of abarrel loose on said shaft, said barrel having a beveled-edge recess in its upper face, a spiral spring in said recess having one end connected with said shaft and its other end bearing on the inner beveled edge of the recess, a gear-wheel on said barrel, a pinion meshing with said gear-wheel, a gear-wheel meshing with said pinion and arranged on the secondshand arbor, a pair of toothed wheels arranged with alternating teeth and located on the shaft of said pinion, and apair of su%)erposed disks havingnotches alternating anc engaging the alternately-toothed Wheels, said notched disks LOUIS EUGLNE FAVRE 5 being secured to the shaft of the usual escape- Witnesses:
