HYDRANT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 764,864, dated July 12, 1904.
Application filed July 24, 1903. Serial No. 166,831. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT L. POLLOOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county of Rice and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrants; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hydrants for streets, lawns, and other similar places; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the hydrant. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the hydrant.
A is a vertical outlet-pipe provided with a semicircular bend b at its top and a projecting handle B for revolving it.
C is a plug-valve secured to the lower end of the pipe A and provided with a hole 0 in one side. D is the plug-valve casing, in which the said plug-valve is free to revolve or oscillate. This plug-valve casing is provided with an inlet-hole (Z, which registers with the hole 0 in the plug-valve, and E is the water-supply pipe, which is connected to. the casing and which is constantly in communication with the hole (Z. A drain-hole f is provided in the plug-valve casing for the hole 0 to communicate with when turned out of line with the hole (Z, so that the column of water may be drained out of the pipe A.
D is a cap for protecting the nut of the plug-valve.
Gr is a ground-plate which is secured at the surface of the ground and provided with a ball-race 9 around the pipe A. H is a cap provided with a ball-race h and secured to the said ground plate. I represents balls which are journaled in the said ball-races around the pipe A and against which the said pipe bears. These balls enable the pipe A to be oscillated by means of the handle with the exertion of very little force.
J is an outer pipe or cylinder secured to the ground-plate and to the plug-valve casing and coupling them together.
What I claim is- The combination, witha vertical outlet-pipe having a delivery spout or bend at its upper end and a plug-valve at its lower end, of a plug-valve casing in which the said plug-valve is free to oscillate, a ground-plate provided with a ball-race and encircling the middle part of the said pipe below its said delivery-spout, a connection between the said ground-plate and the plugwalve casing, a cap secured to the said ground-plate and also provided with a ball-race, and balls arranged around the said pipe between it and the two said ballraces. 4
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT L. POLLOOK.
