CORE COMPOUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 764,849, dated July 12, 1904;.
' Application filed September 29, 1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE ANsoN HUB- BARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, in the State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Composition of Materials adapted to form an Improved Compound for Making Foundry- Cores, of which the followingis aspecification.
This improved compound is composed of the following materials: hydrous calcium sulfate, commonly known as gypsum or landplaster, stucco, flour formed from wheat, rye, or other suitable grain, starch, and finelycomminuted vegetable fiber, commonly known as sawdust, wood-dust, pulverized wood, wood-pulp, wood-flour, or the like. These ingredients are preferably thoroughly mixed in a dry or powdered state to form the compound for making the cores.
It is well known that a core-forming mate rial which will conform to all of the necessary requirements desirable in such material should have as light weight as is consistent for the purposes desired. The addition of the sawdust in this compound greatly increases the bulk in proportion to the weight, and I have found that Serial No. 175,092. (No specimens.)
this makes an excellent product, fulfilling all of the necessary requirements for making a good core.
In casting different metals or different qualities of iron I have found that it is essential to make this compound in greatly-varying proportions, insomuchso that any single definite proportion would not sufliciently state my conception of this invention. Itis also apparent that changes may be made in the particular ingredients used without departing from the spirit of this invention.
I am aware that some of these substances have heretofore been used in making cores, and I do not claim the use of such separately; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure .by Letters Patent, is-
A composition of matter of the character herein set forth, consisting of hydrous calcium sulfate, stucco, flour, starch, and finely-comminuted vegetable fiber 0r sawdust.
