The invention further contemplates the provision ot' a machine havingdilferent compartments for goods ot' dilferent values, with coineontrolled mechanism common to both com- 3o partnients and controlling the delivery of goods from either cempartment'at the option of the. customer.
The invention still further contemplates the provision of a novel flexible guard or shield which is adapted to he nianipulatml by the hand of -a customer and by which the customer is enabled to select. and remove any sample of the goods` he desires` without the. imssihilitv of snrrept itionsly abstrncting them` also the prof vision of a shutter automatically operated and controlling access to said guard.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral l. represents a iiox or casing provided with transparent top and side.

The main section has a sliding connection with the rear portion ot' the case, which forms a doorway. and the twodoors tliusconstriicted are adapted to close the spaces on opposite sides of the center of the casing. It will be seen that by forming each door of a sliding section and a hinged section upon throwing the hingeddoor sections openfaceess will be ati'orded to the center of the case and that if it be desired to fully open the doorway on either side of the center this maybe accomplished by simply folding back the hinged section ot' one door, swinging out the hinged section of the other door, and sliding the latter door up vmay be against the main section of the first-named door. It will therefore be apparent that the doors may be conveniently adjusted to give partial or full access to either or both sides of tlie center of the casing and that in their open position the doors. are adapted to oecupy but little room, as the swinging sections may, it' desired, be folded closeup against the outer sides ot' the sliding sections.
The interior ofthe bex or casing is divided into compartments 7 and 8 hy a cover 9, which inclosesthe vending mechanism, and by a transparent panel or partition 10, which extends between the top of said cover and the top of thc casing. As shown, the partition 10, which is preferably made. ot' glass, is litted in grooved guideways 11` lixed to the top of the case and to the upper surface of the cover, so.that Ly sliding the partition rearwardly it disengaged from the gi'ooved guide- '.vays and the removal oi' the cover S) through the doorway at the i'eaiof the case permitted.
The front of the casing is provided with glass panels l2 and three metallic panels 13, 14. and l5, the panels 13 and 14 being provided witli openings 13' 14', atl'ordiug access to the two compartments` T and h on opposite sides of the partition 1U. these openings lieing closed by veiticallv-sliding doors or shutters lti lt'. The panel l5 is slotted to form a delivenv-opeiiing lT, a coin-slot l, and an observation-opeiiing l2). through which latter the coin contained in the coin-receptacle of the coin-vending mechanism is temimrarily displayed prior to its deposit into the moneydrawer, as hereiniit'iir described.

A'bearing-braclcet 31 forms one ot' the, hearings for a short rock-shaft- 32, which projects through the panel 15 and to the. outer end of which is connected an operating-liandle 33, which normally stands in a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 1. This shaft carries a cam-segment 34, which hears upon the V shaped contact portions 3() 30 of the operating-rods 28 Q8'.
"hen the handle 33 stands in a neutral or vertical position, as shown in Fig. 1, the sides of the cam-segment 34 hear upon the V-shaped contact-pieces 30 30' of the two operating- -rods 28 2S' and hold said rods projected--tliatis, moved outwardly to their fullest extent t0- ward the sides of the ease-this act-ion causing the arms 9.2 to be thrown upwardly and their right-angled extensions .26 to be brought to bear against the lowerinost toggle-levers of each set, thus forcing said levers to spread out and move the' doors or shutters 16 16' upwardly, so as to close the openings 13' 14' in the panels 13 and '14. By this means the two shutters are normally held closed. When the handle 33 is turned in one direct-ion or the other, however, one of the doors will he opened through the medium of the connecting means before described to admit access to one of the compartments T or 8. Assuming that the handle 33 is moved to the right. it will of course he understood that the cam 34 will he moved out of engagement with the V-sliaped ICO IIO

Other goods of dii'ercnt values may, however, be placed within the two compartments for sale, and the machine is not limited to the sale of cigars.
The transparent panels of the case permit the customer to visually inspect the goods, and the openings i3' 14' are provided to enable the customer to insert h is hand within either compartment for the purpose of making a selection of one or more articles or samples of the goods, means being provided to enable the customer to manipulate the goods without the possibility of surrcptitiously abstracting them. l`o this end a shield or guard 3G in the t'orm of a flexible pocket or mitten is arranged in the rear of each opening 13' 14' and is adapted to receive the thumb Aand fingers ot' the hand of the customer to enable him to pick out or select such cigars -as he may desire and place them in position to be delivered at. thc front ot' the machine without permitting him to have direct manual contact therewith or to draw any of the goods out of either one of the said openings. The pocket is constructed ot' any suitable. flexible material-snch as fabric, leather, interwoven links, or silk-and is formed at its mouth with a hem 3T to receive the larger coil of a spiral spring 38, clamps 3.) being provided to rigidly secure the spring and pocket to the rear or inner side of the panels H or 15. These clamps or fastenings 38 are removable to enable the pocket to be readily detached and others attached., which operation is frequently necessary for laundry purposes. lt will be seen that the spiral springli'allows the. pocket to bc extended so that it maybe projected inwardly a sullicient distance to enable the customer to reach the cigars within any of the boxes in either of the compartments and that when the hand of theenstomer is removed from the pocket the `spring will automaticalLV close 'said pocket up against the rear side of the front wall ol' the casing.

At the front of the frame between the side,
walls is arranged a receiving-compartment -l-l, into which the goods are discharged and which communicates with the delivery-opening 1T. This receiving-connartment is provided with a hood 45, which allows the goods to pass to the front thereof, but at the same time prevents the introduction ot' a hand or implement from the fror of the machine to the controlling parts of the vending mechanism effecting the feed of the goods to said conipartments, so that access cannot be obtained to the vending mechanism from either compartment of thc delivery-opening to interfere with the proper action of the mechanism and delivery of the goods.
The vending mechanism is so constructed that the customer by the operation ot' the handle 32 to the right or left may control the delivery ot' goods from either compartment T or 8 and se that the proper aammt or number ot' goods of dill'erent value will be delivered in ICO stancel have so constructed the coin-vending mechanism as to enable a customer to obtain from the compartment 7 cigars lto the number of one for live cents, two for teu cents. or live for twenty-live cents and from the compartment 8 cigars to the number ot' one for ten cents or three for twenty-live cents and have so devised the mechanism as to prevent the outlet of any goods from one compartment when the handle 33 has been properly manipulated` and the coin inserted is usable toohtain goodsonly from the other compartment.

Then a penny is inserted, it occupies the depth of the slot in the three slides 58, 60, and 61 and forms a locking connection between said slides tc cause them to move in unison upon the outward movement of slide 58. This outward movement of slide 5S would, however, not at any point transmit motion to the slide 63, for the reason that the pawl (Si would simply ride upon the inclined face 61 of the slide 61, thus allowing said slide 61 to be moved outwardly to its fullestpexteut without in an) way transferring motion to the slide (33. Hence as the movement of slide 63 is necessary to transfer motion to the guard or table for the reception of cigars to be discharged no cigars could he ejected from the machine and the attempt to operate the machine upon the deposit of such a coin would he defeated. It will thus he seen that the element 5S forms apo'wer-applying device and the element 63 a power-transniitting device, while the coinslides interposed between them constitute an automatic multiple clutch or selective device to var v the degree. of motion of the said power-transmittingdcvice undera determined range of motion of the said power-applying device.'

The vending mechanism embodies means for regulating the discharge of goods from thc two compartments according to the denomination of a coin inserted in the slot 1X, which coin may h e usahle for the purchasi` of goods from either compartment. rlfhus it is necessary to prevent the operation of the machine Y foi` the discharge of goods from the ten-cent compartment S when a nickel only is inserted and which is adapted only for the purchase of one cigar from the compartment T. It is also necessary to provide for the discharge of one cigar `from the compartment S or two from the compartment T when a dime is inserted. It is further necessary to provide means permitting ot' the discharge of live cigars from the compartment-T or only three from the compartment S when a yquart-er is inserted. To these ends I have provided means for automaticaly regulating the movement of the guard or table to a different extent upon the deposit of a coin of a certain denomination when the operating-handle 33 is moved to the left or right. The shaft -LG is provided with a head 99, which tits within a slot 100, formed Within a plate 101, pivoted to a shipper-arm 102, pivoted at its lower end to a bracket 103 upon the hase t0 and forked at its upper end to engage a grooved collar 10i on the shaft 73, which shaft is mounted to slide longitudinally of its length or transversely of the frame in bearings 105 on the side walls 41 of said frame. A spring 10b' hears upon the plate 101 and maintains the same in a yielding-like' engagement with the head 9S), allowing said head to impart motion tothe shipper-arm without undue strain upon the parts.
