Be it known that I, JOHN C. GAITHER., of Somerset, in the county of Somerset, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Printing the Directions upon Newspapers; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description oi' the same, reference being'had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specication, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, part ot' the table being broken away, and
Figure 2.is a front elevation.
The same letters are cmployedin both the figures in the indication of parts which are identical. p
This machine is intended to be applied to use in the direction of newspapers or periodicals, by printing the name and address of subscriberslupon the same, or upon wrappers intended to enclose the same.
The following description will enable persons skilled in the art to construct and operate this machine.
The mechanism is attached to a table, A, across which is placed theshaft B, which supports the type-wheel C. lThis is constructed with ilanges projecting from each side, to receive the type, D, which are placed around the periphery of thewheel, and so secured bywedges and spaces, E, that they shall stand radially to the wheel. Subdivisions are formed by partitions F, so that only a limited number of names need be included in one division, in order that changes may be made without' unnecessary'di-liiculty. The side, C', of the type-wheel, does not bear directly against the sides of,the lines of type, but sector-plates G are interposed, extending from one partition to another... These sector-plates may be pressed against the form by set-screws H, which, passing through the side piece C', (constructed with suitable female screws,) press against the sector-plates. I have shown a distributing and two type-rollers. L These are'attached to a frame, which is pressed downwards, so as to keep the type-rollers in contact with the type by the spring Q. The frame R is adjustably attached by a thumb-screw, and the table is so constructed with slots, R' and R, that the frame, and-treadle, and other parts of the mechanism, may be' moved from one part oi" the table to another, in case it should be desired to use a number oi type-wheels on thefsame shaft. The spiral spring S raises the lever L when released from the action of the t'readle. What I elaine as iny invention, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is-
'lhe combinations of the followingelements, viz, the treadle I, the lever L, and press-rod M, having lan elastic-faced point, M', the feed-iinger O,the wheel O, with an adjustable side plate, C', sectorplates G, type D,'we`dges E, and partitionsF, and the plate N, with opening N', said parts being arranged in relation to one another substantially as and for the purpose set forth. l
