SPRING BACK CHAIR.
APPLIOATIOI III-ED IA! 9. 1008. 10 140mm,.
Patented July 5, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN GILSON, OF PORT WVASHINGTON, WVl'SCONSIN.
SPRING-BACK CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 764,286, dated July 5, 1904:.
Application filed May 9, 1908. Serial No. 156,325. tNo model.)
To all whom. it nut y concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN GrILsON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Port VVashin'gton, in the county of Ozaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Back Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafterparticularly set forth, with reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed, the object of said invention being to simplify and cheapen the production of spring-back chairs, as well as to improve the connection of the backs with the seats or seat-spiders of the chairs.
- being indicated by lines 1 1 in the second and fast.
lifth figures; Fig. 2, a plan view of the spider and parts of the back in connection therewith; Fig. 3, a sectional view of spider and backjoint, this view being indicated by lines 3 3 in said second figure; Fig. 4, a plan view, partly in section, on the plane indicated by lines 4 4 in the third figure; Fig. 5, a rear elevation of the upper portion of the springback; and Figs. 6 and 7, horizontal sections, respectively, indicated by lines 6 6 and 7 7 in the fifth figure.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates the rear arm of a chair-seat spider, and B a pivot-pin on which the spider is made Riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the under side of a widened portion of the spider-arm A is a spring-steel plate C, thatis likewise connected to the upper side of a preferably cast-metal bracket D in a recess of the same to be flush therewith. The bracket has a central eye for the passage of a bolt E, having angular engagement with an aperture in the spider-arm A, this arm being also provided with a bolt-head countersink. There is also a transverse rear slot 6 in the bracket, through which screw-holes in said spider-arm are accessible. A spiral spring F surrounds the bolt E and opposes the under side of the bracket D, the tension of the spring being regulated by a nut G, run on the lower screwthreaded end of said bolt.
Depending longitudinally-bored rear lugs c of the bracket 1) lengthwise of same are ongaged by lower horizontal ends of a pair of suitably-bent spring-rods H, each rod being held by a set-screw (Z in adjustable engagement with a bracket-lug. The spring-rods are preferably connected at their upper vertical ends by a cross-piece c, and arranged to slide on these ends of the rods is another preferably cast-metal bracket I, held by screws in connection with a back-rest J, that is ordinarily a curved piece of wood. Abutting the back-rest is a plate K, shaped at its ends to fit the spring-rods H, and a central screwthreaded stem f extends from this plate through another plate L, that engages a slot in the bracket I and is also shaped at its ends to lit said rods.
ing the nut said plates are caused to bind the spring-rods H and hold the bracket 1 and backrest J therewith in vertically-adjusted posi tion on said rods.
In practice the yield of the chair-back is against resistance of its rods H, the spring Gr, and spring-plate (J, and this-spring-plate being fastened at its ends to the seat-spider and,
bracket D the joint is antibinding and noiseless.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isr 1. A chair-seat spider, a bracket, a s n-ingplate fastened at its ends to a spider-arm and the bracket, a bolt extending through the spider-arm and bracket, a spiral spring surrounding the bolt between a tension-n ut thereon and said bracket, bent spring-rods having their'lower ends in connection with the aforesaid bracket, and a back-rest connected to the rods.
2. A chair-seat spider, a recessed bracket, a spring-plate fastened at one end to an arm of the spider and having its other end fast in the bracket-recess, a spring adjustable as to tension under the bracket, bent spring-rods having their lower ends in connection with A nut M is-run on the stem f of plate K to abut plate L, and by tightensaid bracket, and a back-rest connected to the In testimony that I claim the foregoing I I0 rods. have hereunto set my hand, at Port Washing- 3. The combination of the back, and its rods ton, in the county of Ozaukee and State of H, the grlooved clamp-plates Ki L, recessed WVisconsin, in the presence of two Witnesses. 5 at their ec ges to engage the rec s, the screw connecting the plates, the cover-plate secured JOHN GILSON' to the back and having the opening receiving WVitnesses: the outerclamp-plate, and the hand-Wheel T. A. BOERNER, mounted on said screw. 1 EDWARD BAULHAN.
