ROLL-PAPER HOLDER AND CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 764,200, dated July 5, 1904.
Application filed January 16 1904.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, MICHAEL MOMAI-IEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roll-Paper Holders and Outtcrs; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in roll-paper holders and cutters of the class in which the weight of the paper-roll is utilized to maintain the pressure of the knife thereon and also has special reference to an improved printing attachment for use in combination with such apparatus that is adapted to equidistantly stamp a business-card or other desired matter on the paper as it is drawn from the roll.
The object of my invention is to simplify and cheapen the construction of apparatus of this class by the provision of improved means whereby the weight of the paper-roll is caused to control and operate the connected attachments and also to provide simple and compact means for the stamping of the paper as it is drawn from the roll.
A further object of my invention is to provide simple and efficient means whereby the operator is enabled to diminish or increase the pressure of the knife on the paper-roll, as may be desired, by the raising or lowering of a handle or lever associated with the rollsupporting mechanism of the machine.
The invention is fully described and claimed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a vertical end elevation of the roll-paper holder and its attachments. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal view of the printing-cylinder. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the roll-supporting mechanism, taken on the dotted line 00 :v in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of my invention.

Aspindle or bolt 7 is secured in each of the standards 2 2 at a point above the slots 4t and have pivotally extended therefrom the arms 8 8, which have their outer ends connected by the horizontal paper knife 9, and the longer arms 10 10, which extend beyond the vertical surface of the paper-r0116, have their outer ends connected by a handle 11.
In order to form a vertically-movable support for the paper-roll 6 and to adapt said roll to control the movements of the knife and handle carrying arms 8 and 10, I provide the supporting-blocks 12, which are retained in sliding engagement with the inner faces of the standards 2 2 by means of the bolts 13, which penetrate the lower portions of said blocks, extend through the slots 4, and are provided at their outer ends with a washer and adjustable nut which bear loosely against the outer face of said standards, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The blocks.12 are provided with the guide-pins 15, which operate in the slots 4 and keep said blocks in longitudinal alinement therewith, and are also provided at their upper ends with suitable seats or bearings for receiving the ends of the spindles 5.
Connection is had between the arms 8 and 10 and the blocks 12 by means of the hangers 1 1 1 1, which have their lower ends pivotally secured to the bolts 13 on said blocks and their upper ends attached to said arms at a point intermediate of their ends, as shown in Fig. 1.
The printing attachment of my invention comprises the type-cylinder 16 and rotary inking-pad 17, the latter being encircled with a piece of absorbing felt or cloth which may be saturated with ink from external application or be kept moist by reason of the cylinder being made hollow for receiving ink, the same escaping therefrom to the cloth-through restricted apertures provided in the cylindercasing. The said cylinders 16 and 17 are provided with the shafts or spindles 16 and 17, respectively, which pass through the elongated slots 18 in the supporting members 18 and have their ends yieldingly connected by means of the coiled springs 19. The lower ends of the supporting members 18 are rigidly connected to the transversely-projecting fingers 20, the outer ends of which are pivotally secured to the arms 10 at the juncturepoint of the links 14. A coiled spring 21 also connects the ends of the spindles 16 with the lower portion of the supporting members 18, thus permitting said spindles and those of the inking-cylinder to have a yielding reciprocatory movement within the slots 18.
A rotary blotter 22 for blotting the freshlyprinted portions as the paper is unwound is retained in position on the upper surface of the paper-roll 6 in advance of the knife 9 by means of the links 23, the said links being pivoted to the arms 8 at the juncture-point of the hangers 141 and having their outer ends notched to removably receive the spindles 22 of said blotters, as shown in Fig. 1.
It will be apparent that by reason of the manner of hanging the several connected parts of my paper-roll cutter and printer the knife 9 will have a binding engagement and the printing-cylinder l6 and rotary blotter 22 a loose gravity engagement with the surface of the paper-roll 6, thus enabling the latter to readily respond to any unevenness in the surface thereof. Should the operator desire to release the pressure of the knife on the paper-roll as the paper is drawn therefrom, he raises the handle 11 with one hand and withdraws the paper with the other, or vice versa when he desires to cause a greater pressure of the knife on the roll during the tearing operation.
It is obvious that such changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction of the parts as fairly fall within the scope of my invention may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, a pair of supporting-standards, reciprocatory rollsupporting means associated therewith, a roll supported by said means, a knife and operating-handle pivotally attached to said standards, and connection between said roll-supporting means and knife and handle respectively.
2. In a device of the class described, a pair of vertical standards, vertically-reciprocatory bearings mounted on said standards, a roll directly supported by said bearings, arms pivoted to said standards above said bearings, a knife carried by said arms and coacting with the face of said roll, and connecting-links pivoted to said arms and to said bearings, substantially as described.
3. In a roll-paper holder and cutter, a pair of standards, longitudinally-slidable blocks associated therewith, means for retaining said blocks in engagement with said standards, a roll supported by said blocks, knife carrying and controlling arms pivoted to said standards, and independent means connecting said block with said knife carrying and controlling arms adapted to impart a movement from one to the other.
4. In a roll-paper holder and cutter, a supporting-frame, oppositely-located longitudinal slots provided in said frame, reciprocatory bearings guided by said slots, a shaft supported by said bearings in alinement with said slots, a double pair of arms pivoted to said frame, a knife carried by one of said pair of arms and means for connecting said separate pair of arms and said bearings for adapting a movement of one to cause a simultaneous movement of the others.
5. In a roll-paper holder and cutter, a frame, vertically-slidable bearing-blocks mounted in said frame, a shaft supported by said blocks, a series of projecting pairs of arms having a common pivot in said frame, a knife carried by one of said pair of arms, an operatinghandle carried by the other of said pair of arms, independent links connecting said arms and blocks adapted to impart a movement from one to the other of said elements.
6. In a roll-paper holder and cutter, a pair of supporting-Standards, arms pivoted to and extending outwardly in opposite directions from said standards, a knife carried by some and a printing mechanism by the other of said oppositely-extending arms, means pivoted to said oppositely-extending arms and having sliding pivotal connection with said standards, and a shaft interposed between said standards and supported by said means.
7. In a roll-paper cutter and holder, a pair of standards, two pair of arms pivoted to and extending from said standards, a rotary printing attachment carried by one and a knife by the other pair of arms, separate means pivoted to each of said pair of arms and having their ends connected and in sliding engagement with said standards, and a shaft interposed between said standards and supported by said connected means.
8. An apparatus of the class described comprising a pair of supporting-standards having longitudinal guideways therein, bearingblocks longitudinally movable in said guideways, a shaft supported by said blocks, arms pivoted to and extending oppositely from said standards, a knife carried by one pair of arms, and a printing attachment, consisting of a type and an inking cylinder, loosely carried by the other pair of arms, and means connecting said blocks with each pair of arms for causing an oscillatory movement of said arms when said blocks are moved.
9. An apparatus of the class described,comprising a pair of supporting-standards, shaftsupporting means retained in engagement With and longitudinally slidable on said standards, a shaft supported by said means, a pair of knife-carrying arms pivoted to said standards, a rotary blotter loosely carried by said arms, a second pair of arms pivoted to said standards, a printing attachment, comprising inking and printing cylinders, loosely retained in position by said arms, and means connecting said pair of arms to said shaftsupporting means for causing an oscillation of said arms When said latter means is moved.
10. In an apparatus of the class described,
the combination With a pair of supporting standards and a paper-roll mounted therein, of a pair of outWardly-projecting arms pivoted to said standards, upright supporting members pivoted to said arms, and coacting printing and inking cylinders held in position by said upright members, the said printingcylinder being adapted to ride loosely on said roll.
11. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a pair of supportingstandards and a paper-roll mounted therein,
of a vertically-movable support for said roll, oppositely-disposed knife carrying and controlling arms pivoted to said standards, connection between said arms and movable supports, and a printing attachment associated With said controlling-arms adapted to ride loosely on said roll and equidistantly stamp the paper as it is unrolled therefrom.
12. In an apparatus of the class described,
the combination With a pair of vertical standards, longitudinally-slidable bearing-blocks on said standards, and a paper-roll supported by said blocks, of a pair of knife carrying arms pivoted to said standards, a rotary blotter connected to said arms adapted to ride on said roll and have an oscillatory movement with relation to said arms, a second pair of arms pivoted to said standards, stamping means, comprising a printing and an inking cylinder, pivotally connected to said arms and adapted to have an oscillatory movement With relation to said arms, and means connecting said pair of arms, and said block for causing a simultaneous movement of said parts.
