BOILER-TUBE FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 764,088, dated July 5, 1904.

Be it known that I, GERHARD VVETTELs, a citizen of Germany, residing at Frazee,county of Becker, and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boiler-Tube Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tubular steam-boilers; and it pertains more especially to the means employed for reinforcing the ends of the tubes and forming a joint between them and the heads of the boiler.
The construction of my invention is explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of a portion of the boiler, showing the end of a boiler-tube in position in the head preparatory to inserting a reinforcing-collar, said collar being also shown in section. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of the subjectmatter shown in Fig. 1 with the reinforcingcollar in place preparatory to swaging and upsetting the end of the tube; and Fig. 3 also represents a longitudinal section of the subject-matter shown in Figs. 1 and 2, showing the end of the boiler-tube after it has been swaged and the joint has been completed.

Heretofore it has been common to provide straight untapered holes in ,the heads of boilers for the reception of the ends of the tubes and to close the joints between such parts by upsetting and swaging the ends of the tubes, forcing them outwardly and rearwardly around the apertures and against the exterior face of the boiler-heads, and in some instances reinforcing-collars have been in-.
serted in the tubes having flanges which extend outwardly over the ends of the tubes, said collars thus employed performing the function of annular wedges which expand the tubes into close contact with their bearings, in which case the joints have been formed without swaging the ends of the tubes them selves.
By my improvement the heads of the boilers A are provided with outwardly-diverging tapered apertures B for the reception of the ends of the tubes 0. The tubes C when inserted are expanded to conform to the outwardly-diverging apertures B, thus forming the diagonal contact-bearings D. WVhen the ends of the tubes have been thus inserted and expanded, I insert the collars E, which areV shape in longitudinal section, as shown at F. When the collars E have been inserted, as indicated in Fig. 2, the protruding ,ends (Jr of the tubes are swaged inwardly against the end of the sleeve E, filling the V-shaped space H (shown in Fig. 2) when the same is upset against the end of said collar E, as indicated in Fig. 3. To prevent the tendency of the boiler-head A from being forced or sprung inwardly upon the tubes C as said tubes are being swaged, I preferably provide the tubes with an outwardly-projecting bead or bearing 1, which is formed by swaging the ends of the pipe outwardly by any Well-known means at the proper point of contact with the head. Thus it is obvious that by this arrangement the head will be prevented from being sprung inwardly'as the ends of the tubes are being upset, and the ends of the tubes willbe forced outwardly against and a close joint formed between them and the walls of the aperture by the action of the wedge-shaped collars as they are driven firmly in place, while owing to the fact that the ends of the tubes are swaged inwardly over and against the ends of said wedge-shaped collars said collars are securely retained in place and the liability of their becoming loose or slack in their bearings by contraction and expansion of the tubes as might otherwise occur is avoided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: 7

A boiler-head and tube-joint consisting in the combination of a boiler-head provided with outwardly-diverging tube-receiving apertures; boiler-tubes having outwardly-diverging ends located in said apertures; annular collars V shape in longitudinal section loeated within the diverging ends of said tubes, the protruding ends of said tubes being swaged inwardly so as to engage the outer ends of said collars.

A boiler-head and tube-fastening con sisting in the combination of a boiler-head provided with outWardly-diverging tube-receiving apertures; boiler-tubes having outwardly-diverging ends located in said apertures, said tubes being provided With outward projections forming contact-bearing surfaces for the boiler-head Within the boiler; annular collars V shape in longitudinal section and located Within the diverging ends of said tubes, the protruding ends of said tubes being sWaged inwardly so as to engage the outer ends of said collars.
