To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES LEAH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kingsland, in the county of Cleveland and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to stove pipes, and more particularly to stove pipe sections that are adapted to telescope each other and has for its object to provide a stove pipe section blank provided adjacent each longitudinal edge with a series of holes one of said series of holes carrying rivets securely held therein whereby stove pipe section blanks so constructed may be shipped with their rivets,

Other objects and advantages, such as simplicity, cheapness', durability, efficiency, and the general improvement of the art, will be brought out in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

the edges of the flat sheet spaced apart prior to their interlocking, Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the edges overlapped and both engaging the fastening means, and Fig. 5 is a similar View through the seam before the head of the rivet has been flattened.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a section of pipe provided adjacent one end with an annular rib 2. The section 1 is formed preferably from a sheet 3 of the usual material, which is provided along two of its opposite edges with holes 4 and 5, formed preferably by merely punching in such a manner as to form burs 6 and 7 around the holes 4 and 5.
In the formation of a pipe section, I use a novel form of fastening device 8 which is substantially a rivet like lug provided with a head 9 disposed interiorly of the pipe section, and a stem 10 tapered at its outer end, as shown at 11, for facilitating its entry into the hole and further provided with reduced shank 12 adjacent the head'9. The rivet like lugs 8 are inserted through the holes 5 with the heads 9 engaging one side of the sheet 3. I Although the holes 5 are of slightly less diameter than the maximum ,diameter of the stem 10, there is sufficient springiness in the material to allow the rivet like lugs 8 to pass through, whereupon the material will spring back into place with the burs 7 engaging the reduced shank 12, as shown in Fig. 3. The material of the pipe is then hammered or the rivet like lugs are forced against the material to flatten out the burs 7 so that the metal in the burs will fit closely around the reduced shanks 12. This will hold the rivet like lu'gs firmly in place and prevent them from being dislodged while the pipe is being shipped. In order to finally assemble the pipe the opposite edge of the sheet 3 is brought over, forming a cylindrical shell, and the rivet like lugs 8 are passed through the holes 4 in a manner similar to their passage through the holes 5, whereupon the burs6 will also engage the reduced shanks 12, as shown in Fig. 4. In order to make this connection permanent, it is then merely necessary to hammer the material around the rivet like lugs so as to flatten out the burs 6, thus forcing the material firmly andpermanently around the reduced shanks 12, as shown in Fig. 5. It will be noted that theholes 4 need not have a bur, as the rivet like lugs themselves could be flattened out after passing them through the holes 4 instead of flattening the burs 6.
Referring especially to Fig. 1 of the drawings, the numeral 13 designates a pipe section formed in a similar manner except that it is provided with a plurality of annular grooves 14 and is further provided with a releasable locking device adjacent its lower end 15 in place of one of the rivet like lugs 8. This releasable locking device comprises a tongue 16 stamped out of the material adjacent one edge of the section and a tion having a series of holes adjacent each of its longitudinal edges, and rivets having reduced shanks located in one of said series of holes and held therein by the gripping edges of said holes, whereby the edges of the blank are adapted to be brought together and riveted to form a pipe section.
