PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE ZISTER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 763,831, dated June 28, 1904.
Application filed December 30, 1903. Serial No. 187,208. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, GEORGE ZIs'TER, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved arrangement for use in connection with bottles and similar vessels, and has for its object to provide a device to be inserted in the neck of a bottle, so that the same cannot be refilled after the original contents have been disposed of and a fraudulent use thereof prevented in the sale of a spurious article.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the upper part of a bottle embodying the improved features. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2, Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow; andFig. 3 a similar view on line 3, Fig. 1. 7
- A represents the body of the bottle, and B the neck part, which is provided interiorly with an annular groove 4 and a shoulder 5 for the retention and support of a stationary diaphragm 6. This diaphragm is provided with minute perforations 7 for the escape of the contents therethrough when the bottle is held in a pouring position.
The neck of the bottle is provided interiorly below the diaphragm with an annular shoulder, forming a valve-seat 8, on which is loosely seated a disk valve 9 in down-closing the liquid passage. An eyebolt 10 is inserted through the center of the valve and rigidly se- The upper end of a chain 11 is connected to the lower end of the eyebolt, and a weight 12 is loosely suspended from the lower end of the chain in the neck-passage. This weight is of a diameter closely corresponding to the interior diameter of the neck, so as to prevent hammering and fracturing the inclosing wall, and is cut away on the sides to provide channels 13 for the flow of the liquid when the contents is being discharged.
Then the bottle is tilted for pouring, the valve is opened outward by the force of gravity and the pressure of the liquid seeking an outlet. The valve opens into the chamber or space 14: and is followed in its opening movement by the seating-weight, which automatically returns the valve -to its seated position in closing the passage in the neck when the bottle is returned to a vertical position.
The perforated diaphragm provides for a free flow of the liquid therethrough and guards the passage against the insertion of an instrument in attempting to manipulate the valve in fraudulently refilling the bottle with a counterfeit article.
It will be understood that any suitable connection, either rigid or flexible, between the weight and valve may be substituted for the chain shown without in any Way departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a bottle or the like, of a valve seated in and closing the passage in the neck part when the bottle is in a vertical position, and opening outward when tilted in discharging the contents, and a Weight suspended from said valve by a flexible connection and controlling the movement of said valve, said suspended weight being of a diameter corresponding to that of the neck-passage and cut away on one or more sides for the passage of the liquid when the valve opens.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
