TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Be it known that I, JAMES BALDWIN, of Manchester, ingthe countyof Hillsborough, and State of New Hampshire, havcinvcnted an Improved Joint-Bolt Nut; and do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, und exact description thereof, due reference being had to the accompanying drnwings,. making part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 isa side elevation,
Figure'Q a longitudinal and vertical section, and
- Figure S. a. horizontal section of a portion vot" a. shuttle, showing the application of my invention.
Figure 4 is a. perspective view ot' my invention. l
This invention consists in making the inner farce ot' a screw-nut concave, in order to circuuscribe and contract the wood about its bolt, for the twofold purpose of' preventing the nut from slipping, and to' prevent splitting or breaking away of the wood about such bolt and nut. I
My invention has particular reference to the class of nuts known as joint-bolt nuts, orthose which are inserted within a' mortise made in the wood composing the frame, or other object secured bysuch nut, the sides ot' lthe mortise preventing the turning round ot' 'thcnut while screwing in the bolt. Itis a matter of considerable time and laborto make these rectangular mortises, und in timethe nut tears away the wood and leaves nothing to prevent its rotation.
In the accompanying drawings,l which represent one end of nu or'dinnry shuttle, to which iny invention is :a lied, to `show one form ofits 'a lication, the shuttle-'li is shown ns com osed 'in the Ordinar manner,
PP PP P P v Y oi' a, conical block, n, ot` metal, having a screw-shank or bolt, b, extending into a. hole, c, bored longitudinally into the nose of the shuttle. The nut which constitutes the subject of this invention is shown, in the present instance, et d, as oblong or elliptical in form, und with its inner t'ace'concnve to azsuiiieient extent to produce n somewhatsharp edge. A circular transverse hole or pnssage, e, is bored laterally through the shuttle, and intersecting the bolt-hole c, before mentioned, into which the nut-ol is pushed lengthwise until it comes within the path oi' the bolt or shank b, which-is to he' screwed into it, the relative size of the hole e being suchvas to preventrotution of the nut untilits inner i'nce comes in contnctwith the wood. The turning ofthe boltin the right direction draws. the nut tightly up to the'wood. Its conccvity 'compresses the wood immediately about such bolt, .while its sharp edge cuts into the wood, and prevents rotation of it, at the sume time preventing liability of the wood to split. In-the present instance it is runde oblong or elliptical, in` order to conform in shape to the-inner surface of the circular passage or hole c, as the combination of the elliptical-shaped boundary ci' the face of the nut with the conccvity ot' sucht'aee produces the`exactoutline necessary to fit suid passage e, us will readily be seenby referring to the accompanying drawings.
The circular holee is bored into the wood in much less time than is now occupied in forming the'rectnngular niortise, and, in addition to this, thc.outcr end ot' such hole is lled up more expeditiously and in a. morepcri'eot manner than in a rectangular one..
I cleimnsmy invention- Y A joint-boltinut, havingr a. concave face, essentially in manner and for the purpose ns herein shown and described. I
JAMES BALDWIN.
