SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 763,045, dated June 21, 1904.

Application filed January 9, 1904.

Be it known that I, KENTON COOPER, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at East Highlands, in the county of San Bernardino, State of California, have invented and discovered a new and useful Improvement in Holders for Fruit-WVrapping Papers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in holders for fruit-wrapping papers; and the objects of my improvement are to provide a holder adapted to be secured to a box employed for retaining therein wrapping-papers used for inclosing oranges, lemons, and other fruits, the said box resting upon a fruit-box while being packed with fruit or in close proximity thereto, reference being made to the accompanying drawings and to referencenumerals, marked thereon; and the invention consists, essentially, in the construction, combination,and arrangement of the several parts, as will hereinafter be fully described in the specification, shown upon the drawings appended hereto, and specifically pointed out in the claims made a part hereof. I attain these objects by the construction and arrangement of the several parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line a a of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top plan view showing the holder, the box for retaining the wrapping papers, the fruitpacking box, and a portion ofthe bin of the fruit-grader. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line b I) of Fig.4, illustrating the whole of the elastic'band for reciprocating the presser of the holder in operative position. Fig. 4c is a front plan view of my improvement,showing a portion of the elastic band for operating the presser of the holder broken away. Fig. 5 shows views in detail of parts of my improved holder, and. Fig. 6 is a view in elevation of a modified form of my improvement.

The reference-numeral 1 denotes the body portion of the holder, and 2 2 refer to the horizontal perforations extending through the body portion 1, in which thumb-screws 3 3 are inserted and by means of which the said body portion'l of the holder is secured to the end of the box 5, which is held upon the fruit- I boxes by the cleat 4, where the papers 6 6 for wrapping the fruit are placed and held evenly in package form ready to be applied to the fruit taken from the bin 7 and packed into the boxes 8 8 for shipment.

The presser 9 is preferably made of a stout piece of wire bent upon itself, forming a finger-loop 11 and comprising two legs and 12, lying in the same plane with eaoh'other. The leg 10 is adapted to be reciprocate'd in the vertical perforation 14 in the body portion 1 of the holder when desirable, as will hereinafter-be referred to. The lower end of the leg 10 is externally screw-threaded at 15 to receive the internal screwthreads16 in the upper end of the hollow presser-foot 17.

In the lower end of the presser-foot 17 I insert a cylindrical piece of rubber 18 or other elastic material centrally perforated at 19, through which I secure the pointed needle 20, the point 21 of the needle projecting downwardly in line with the leg 10 when the holder is in operative position.

The downward and outward extremity of the hollow presser-foot 17 is inturned at 22 to prevent the end of the leg 10 when the hollow presser-foot 17 is screwed home thereupon from causing the cylindrical piece of rubber 18, carrying centrally therein the needle 20, from protruding beyond the end of the presserfoot 17. r V g c To the front face near the upper edge of the body portion 1 of the holder I secure the keeper 25, and between the said keeper 25 and the front face of the body portion 1 the doubled elastic band 26 is retained, the upper end of said elastic band being secured, by means of the S-shaped link 27, in the lower part of the finger-loop 11 near the point wherev the horizontal portion 13 of the leg 10 contacts with the leg 12, while the opposite end of the said elastic band passes between the keeper 28 and the front face of the body portion lof the holder.

A stirrup 29, having hooks 3O 30, are secured upon the inwardly-extending ends of the keeper 25 near the face of the body portion 1 of the holder, and to the lower portion 31 of the stirrup 29 one end of the elastic I band 26 is fastened, and to the S-shaped link 27 the opposite end of the said band 26 is secured, which band constantly tends to draw the presser 9 downwardly and to hold the horizontal portion 13 of the leg 10 in contact with the upper edge of the holder.

The point 21 of the needle 20, by means of the elastic band 26, is forced into and through a few of the wrapping-papers 6 6 upon the top of the package and retains all the papers in an even pile until ready for use by the person packing the fruit.

In place of the flat rubber band 26 (shown upon Figs. 1,2, 3, and 4 of the drawings) I may employ the coil-spring 35. (Shown upon Fig. 6 of the drawings.)

It will readily appear from the foregoing description, when read in connection with'the drawings hereto appended and made a part of the specification and claims, what is the operation of my invention, and further description of the manner of operating the same is deemed unnecessary.

It is obvious that many variations and changes in the details of construction and arrangement of my invention would readily suggest themselves to persons skilled in the art to which it appertains and still be within the spirit and scope of my invention.

1 do not desire to confine this invention to the specific construction, combination, and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, and the right is reserved to make all changes in and modifications of the same as come within the spirit of this invention; but I do desire to secure as my invention all features of construction and equivalents thereof that come within the scope of my improvement as herein shown and described, and illustrated upon the drawings appended hereto.

VVhat I do claim as my invention, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A holder for retaining fruit-wrapping papers in place while being applied to fruit, comprisinga body portion having perforations therein, aspring-operating forked presser one end thereof adapted to be reciprocated within one of the said perforations and the opposite end of the presser to press upon and retain the wrapping-papers in place until the same are applied to the fruit.

2. Aholder for fruit-wrapping papers, com: prising a body portion having horizontal perforations therein, means for securing the holder to a support, the said body portion provided with a vertical perforation, a forked presser one end thereof adapted to be reciprocated within said vertical perforation, the opposite end to retain wrapping-papers in place until the same are applied to the fruit.

3. A holder for papers, comprising a body portion provided with devices for fastening the same to a support, the said body portion having a cross vertical perforation therein, a forked presser one end thereof adapted to be reciprocated within said perforation and the opposite end of said presser adapted to retain wrapping-papers for fruit in even piles or packages. I

4:. A holder for wrapping-papers, an elastically-operating forked presser adapted to be reciprocated within the body portion of the holder, a presser-foot carrying a needle, said presser foot elastically seated within the presser to retain wrapping-papers for fruit until being applied to the same.
