TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Bc it known that I, JA MES EWOODRUFF, of Buffalo, Erie county, New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Faro-Receivers for Passenger-Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description ot' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part hereof', in Which- Figures 1 and 2 represent vertical sections, and
Figure 3 a view of the wheel detached.
A B C D is the section Aofen upright box, vmade of substantial-meteriai, having a securely-hinged door or l opening, the bottoin or lower part fastened by a lock. It may be of' any convenient dimensions, say six inches i square inside, and twelve to sixteen4 inches high. E, fig. 3, is a-revolving cylinder, of tin, or brass, or :my suitable material, having-rims, at each end, and madeso as to be supported and lto revolve on small journals g y. This cylinder is mou nte`d in the lippe-1` part of the box, so that the upper part ofthe cylinderwvill .about reach the upper edge of the box, as shown i'n figs. 1 and 2; On one end of tbe cylinder 'there isa ratchet, h, placed, against which a vibrating spring-pawl, J', works, attached to a rod, L, which extends out towards the drivers stand, and has a reacting spiral spring to retain it to its place. A square, K, is'placed upon the other head ofthe cylinder, and a Hat spring, N, is arranged, so' as to strike against oueor the other side of the square as the cylinder revolves and bclrl it in place. Tberemay be flat spaces on tbefcylinder, or dishell-spaces to carry the money, While it revolves rnore steadily. At tbe`end of the cylinder is a. curbg, to correspond with it, which cuts- 01T all access to the box except by the cylinder. I The yapparatus is placed in tbefront end of tbe our, with proper directions for its use placed there.. V The passenger deposits his fare on the top of the cylinder, and the driver pulls the rod,`\vbich revolves the cylinder, and thus carries it down into the box.
Having described my invention, ivliat-I'claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A box to receive,}:iassenger-fare. in combination with a revolving cylinder, or its equivalent, under control of the driver, to act :is a cover to said box, so that the fares may be putin without any opening of the box.
