SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,542, dated June 14, 1904.
Application filed October 27, 1902.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ALBERT LYNCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Im' provements in Check-Dampers and Smoke- Pipe Sections,of which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelates to devices for promoting and regulating combustion in furnaces, stoves, and heaters of all classes, and more particularly to an improvement which provides by means of a check-damper for the separate and complete regulation of the upward and outward draft from the combustion-chamber, as well as of a downward and inward current of air which is supplied to the combustion-chamber in a heated condition by the operation of my invention.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character named which may be readily applied to and be made a part of any smoke-pipe and be controlled independently without affecting the operation of the ordinary smoke-pipe damper.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and its novel features will be set forth and defined in the appended claim.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is an elevation of a section or joint, so called, of a funnel or smoke-pipe and of other elements which collectively embody my invention; and Fig. 2 is a segmentary view, partlyin section, of a stove, showing a smoke-pipe section provided with my device applied thereto.
Corresponding parts in both figures are denoted by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a joint, so called, or section of smoke-pipe which may be of any ordinary form, arranged to be attached to and form a part of a pipe 1, leading out of the combustion-chamber 1 of a stove, said section 1 being of a length sufficient foruse where required. A smoke-damper 2 is shown pivoted in the usual manner in the smoke-pipe 1 and having a T-shaped handle or key 2. An air-conduit 3 is contained within Serial No. 128,855. (No model.)
the smoke-pipe 1 and lies closely against the inner wall of the latter throughout its general length, but has a U-shaped portion 3 at its upper end which lies parallel with the damper 2 and extends to a point adjacent to the latter when that lies parallel with the pipe 1. The end of the upper arm of the U-shaped portion 3 passes through the wall of the pipe 1, preferably at a point conveniently near to the T handle or key 2, and projects from the pipe 1, outside of which it is flaring or bellmouthed in form, as at 3", the mouth 3 being fitted with a suitable check-damper 4, which may be operated by means of a T handle or key 1'. The air-conduit 3, as shown,
is secured to the wall of the pipe 1 at the bend of the portion 3 and at other convenient points along its general length, metal straps or bands 5 5 being used for that purpose and riveted or otherwise fastened to the pipe 1.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains. The combined device presents itself in a form which can be readily and conveniently placed in a suitable position in a smoke-pipe, so as to form a continued portion thereof. By means thereof a current of air can be introduced into the smoke-pipe and controlled by means of the check-damper 4 independently of the operation of the smoke-damper. Thus when the fire is burning briskly the smoke-damper can be partly or wholly closed and the airdamper opened as much as may be necessary to keep a good body of fire. Air will then pass from the outside into and through the air-pipe and in its passage, by reason of the return-bends extending entirely across the smoke-pipe, and thus retarding the passage of air therethrough and presenting an increased area of heating-surface, the air is thoroughly heated when delivered into the smoke-pipe, whereby the escape of the unconsumed gases of combustion are prevented and a good body of fire kept.
All the parts of the device are securely fastened together, as shown in the drawings, and may thus be readily handled or transported from place to place.
I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. 1 therefore reserve the right to all such variation and modification as properly fall Within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent In an improved device of the class described, the combination with a smoke-pipe having a damper in the outer end thereof, of an air- ALBERT LYNCH.
