CALENDERlNG-ROLLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,211, dated J 11119 7, 1904. Application filed December 2, 1903. Serial No. 183,516. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH STUART, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wilmington, Delaware, have invented certain Improvements in Galendering-Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is'to so construct a calendering-machine as to lift one or more of the rolls of the vertical stack, so as to relieve the material which is being calendered froma corresponding amount of pressure, a further object being to relieve the material on occasion from all Weight save that of the rollsthat is to say, to release the rolls from the influence of the weighted levers usually employed for imparting pressure to the roll-bearings. These-objects I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly insection, of a stack of calender-rolls provided with lifting and pressure-releasing devices in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, and Figs. 3, 4t, and 5 are enlarged views of parts of the mechanism to which my invention relates.
In calendering paper or other materials it becomes necessary at times to relieve the material from the pressure, or part of the pressure, which is normally exerted upon it, and this is usually done by lifting some or all of the superposed rolls, such lifting operation being ordinarily effected either by hand-operated gearing or by hydraulic power. When hand-gearing is used, the operation is necessarily slow and laborious, because of the great weight to be lifted, and when hydraulic power is used there is always more or less leakage of the pistons, whichpermits the rolls to graduallydescend after they have been lifted.
In carrying out my invention I employ electrically-operated lifting mechanism of the character hereinafter set forth, and I also provide means for relieving the rolls from the pressure of the weighted levers to which they are ordinarily subjected.
In the drawings, 1 1 represent the vertical standards of the machine, having bearings 2 for the fixed bottom roll 3 and providing vertical guides for the bearings 4: of the movable one of the side frames of the machine.
stack of rolls 5, the ends of the rolls at each end lying adjacent to bars 6, which rest upon nuts 7 on vertical screw-shafts 8, the bars 6 being usually pivoted to one of the screwshafts and notched for engagement with the other, so that they can be readily thrown into and out of supporting position beneath the rolljournals. When it is desired to lift any desired number of the vertical stack of rolls 5, therefore, the bars 6 are adjusted so as to engage with the said rolls, and the screws 8 are then lifted, so as to correspondingly lift those rolls which are in engagement with the bars 6. In the pres ent instance I have shown as many of these bars 6 as there arerolls in the stack; butit will be evident that a lesser number may be used, if desired. In order to effect the lifting of the screws 8, each pair of said screws at each end of the machine is suspended from a yoke 9, from which projects upwardly a screw-stem 10, which engages with a nut-11, mounted upon ball-bearings in the cap or upper member of the side frame of the machine, so that by turning this nut in one direction or the other the screws 8, the cross-ha rs in engagement therewith, and the rolls supported on said crossbars will be simultaneously lifted. Each nut 11 is secured to or forms part of a worm-wheel 12, which meshes with a worm 13 on a shaft 14, extending across the machine, so as to connect the opposite worms and insure their simultaneous operation. The shaft 14 has upon it a spur-wheel 15, which meshes with a spurpinion 16 on the armature-shaft of an electric motor 17, the latter being mounted upon the top of one of the side frames of the machine, as shown in Fig. 1, and the flow of current tothe motor being governed by a regulator 02 on (See Fig. 2.)

Each of the bearings of the uppermost roll 5 of the vertical stack is acted upon by a screw 20, to which is adapted a nut 21, upon which bears a lever 22 on a shaft 23, to which is attached another lever, 24, which is connected by a rod 25 to a lever 26,'-carrying a longitudinally-adjustable weight 27 whereby the pres.- sure is applied to the vertical stack of rolls, the calendering action being due to this pressure plus the weight of the rolls themselves.
Owing to the compounding of the leverages,
lifting of any one or more of the stack of rolls to release the material from pressure would cause a more extensive movement of the weighted ends of the levers 26 than is permissible. Hence I provide for counter movement of the screws when lifting movement is imparted to the rolls, this counter movement being effected in the following manner. On each nut 11 is a spur-wheel 28, which meshes with a spur-pinion 29, having a hub which is free to turn in a bearing in the cap-plate of the machine and receives the splined upper end of the screw-stem 20, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, a feather 30 in the hub of the pinion engaging said spline, so that the screw-stem 20 is compelled to turn with the pinion, but is free to rise and fall in respect thereto. When, therefore, the nut 11 is turned so as to raise the screw-stern 10, the screw-stem 20 is turned in a reverse direction, and consequently rises through the nut 21, the pitch of the threads of the screw- stems 10 and 20 being so gaged with respect to the relative diameters of the spur-wheel 28 and pinion 29 that the lift of the two screw-stems will be the same. Hence lifting of the rolls 5 can be effected without any change in the normal position of the weighted levers 26. It is sometimes advisable to relieve the stack of rolls 5 from the pressure of these weighted levers, and in order to effect this result I hang each lever to a double yoke 31, comprising upper and lower forked members and a transverse crossbar32, the lower members of the yoke carrying the pivot-pin for the lever 26 and the upper members of the yoke having vertical slots 33 for the passage of a shaft 34, which extends across the machine from one side frame to the other and is adapted to fixed bearings in said side frames. This shaft 34 has at each end a cam 35, which is adapted to bear upon the cross-bar 32 of the yoke 31, either or both ends of the shaft being also provided with a lever 36, whereby it may be readily turned to the extent of a partial revolution. When the lever 36 is in the position shown by full lines in Fig. 2,, the lever 26 is raised, as therein shown, and the weight 27 is operative to depress the rolls; but if the lever 36 is'thrown into the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2 rise of the yoke 31 and of the pivot end of the lever 26 is permitted until the weight 27 rests upon the floor or other support, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and. the rolls 5 are freed from the influence of said weight. The yoke 31 is prevented from swinging on the shaft 34 by means of a feather 37 which is guided in a vertical slot 38, formed in the outer face of the bearing for the shaft 34, as shown in Fig. 5.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of a stack of calenderrolls, lifting devices therefor, weighted levers for acting upon the stack of rolls, continuous connections between said levers and rolls, and means for backing off said weighted lever connections as the rolls are lifted without disturbing the continuity of said connections, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of a stack of calenderrolls, lifting devices therefor, weighted levers for imparting pressure to the rolls, an electric motor, and gearing whereby said motor is caused to simultaneously operate the lifting devices and the weighted lever mechanism, so as to preserve said lever mechanism in normal position, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of a staekof calenderrolls, lifting devices therefor, having as elements screw-stems and nuts engaging the same, weighted lever mechanism for imparting pressure to said rolls, said mechanism also having as elements screw-stems and nuts engaging the same, and means for simultaneously operating the nuts on the lifting screw-stems and on the screw-stems of the weighted lever mechanism, substantially as specified.
4-. The combination of a stack of calenderrolls, lifting devices therefor having as elements screw stems and nu ts engaging the same, weighted lever mechanism acting upon said rolls and also having as elements screw-stems and nuts engaging the same, spur-wheels on the nuts of the lifting-screws and pinions meshing with said spur-wheels and operating the screw-stems of the weighted lever mechanism. substantially as specified.
5. The combination of a stack of calenderrolls, lifting devices therefor having as elements screw-stems and nuts engaging the same, weighted lever mechanism acting on the rolls and having as elements screw-stems and nuts engaging the same, spur-wheels on the nuts of the lifting-screws and spur-pinions meshing with said spur-wheels, the screwstems of the weighted lever mechanism engaging said spur-pinions so as to be turned thereby but being capable of vertical movement in respect to said spur-pinions, substantially as specified.
6. The combination of a stack of calenderrolls, lifting mechanism therefor having as elements screw-stems and nuts engaging the same, worm-wheels secured to said nuts, a shaft extending across the machine and having worms meshing with said worm-wheels and an electric motor and gearing whereby said worm-wheel shaft is driven from said motor, substantially as specified.
7. The combination of a stack of calenderrolls, and weighted lever mechanism acting on saidrolls to depress the same, certain levers of the mechanism being under the control of cams, whereby they can be slackened in order to relievethe rolls from pressure, substantially as specified. V
8. The combination of a stack of calenderrolls and lever mechanism for imparting pressure thereto, said mechanism having as elements weighted levers, yokes upon which said levers are fulcrumed, and cams acting upon said yokes so as to depress or release the same, substantially as specified.
9. The combination of a stack of calenderrolls, weighted lever mechanism acting upon the same to depress them, said mechanism having as elements weighted levers, yokes comprising upper and lower forked members and a connecting cross-bar, said lower members carrying the fulcrums of the weighted levers and a shaft having cams for acting upon the cross-bars of the yokes so as to depress or release the same, substantially as specified.
