PATENT OFFICE.
VINZENZ SCHWABE, OF PRAGUE, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
METALLIC PACKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,202, dated June 7, 1904.
Application filed October 30, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
B e it known that I, VINZENZ SCHWABE, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary,- residing at Jungmannovo namesti, No. 6, Prague Karolinenthal, Austria s Hungary, have invented a new and useful Metallic Packing; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
rIhe object of this invention is to provide an improved and simpler form of metallic packing for rods passing' through glands, stufhngboxes, or the like and for similar purposes. It will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figurel is a section through stuiiing-box packed according to the invention; Fig 2, a detail view of ring m; Fig. 3, a detail showing method of withdrawing thc flanged ring w out of the stuffing-box; Fig. 4, a modified method of closing the stuffing-box; Fig. 5, another method ot' closing the stufing-box.
The packing consists of one, two, or more lianged rings w, which encircle the rod s, each forming with the next an intervening space, by means of which one or more chambers 7c are formed round the rod. In each of these chambers are fitted two rings, one, e, formed as a i'ull unsplit ring and the other, m, divided into three or more segments which are pressed together upon the rod s, which they fit exactly, by a spiral spring f. The full unsplit rings c are formed with a minimum amount of play p between them and the rods s and engage, by means of a projecting iiange or edge r, with the several segments of the adjacent rings m, for which purpose the latter rings are suitably stepped. The full unsplit ring e is thus supported by the divided ring m at right angles to the rod s, so that it is prevented fronrtilting sidewise by its own weight. The flange r in order to preserve the elastic capacity of the divided rings m is formed so as to allow a minimum amount of play between it and the latter. Both the full unsplit rings e and those, m, with several segments are fitted accurately in the chambers laterally, but are capable oi' displacement therein at right angles to the Serial No. 179,144. (No model.)
axis of the rod, solthat no unequal friction can take place in consequence of any deflections of the rod sidewise. rIhe full unsplit rings e cover the joints g of the divided rings m, (see Fig. 2,) so that when the divided rings m are adj usted, and consequently where the spaces g between the individual segments, which later gradually diminish, still possess their original size, the unpacked portion is reduced to a minimum and the raising of .the individual ring-segments from the rod is prevented. In order to facilitate the packing out of the flanged rings w, the edges are iitted on the inside with a projection o, so that they can easily be drawn out of' the end of thestufiingbox by means of hooks 2, as shown in Fig. 3.
The stuffing-box can be closed, as shown at Fig. l, by means of' a simple cover, or, as in Fig. 4, with soft packing inside the cover, or, again, as in Fig. 5, by means of a cover tightly secured and a supplementary stufiing-box for soft packing constructed in the latter.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- 1. In metallic rod-packing the combination with the rod, of a stuffing-box and gland, a plurality of ianged rings w filling the space between the gland and the bottom of the stuffing-box, a plurality of full, unsplit rings e, one in each ring w and having a minimum lateral play on the rod, a plurality of segmental rings m each iitted into a ring w and illing the space between the ring e and the next ring w or the gland, and a plurality of spiral springs f, each surrounding a segmental ring w.
2. In metallic rod-packing, the combination with the rod, of a ring w having aflange provided with an internal .shoulder or projection e.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
VINZENZ SCHIVABE.
