To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM PERCY DAVIS, fitter, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in Durban, in the Colony of Natal,

South Africa, (whose full postal address is Durban, aforesaid,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckets, (for which application has been made in Great Britain, No. 28,596, dated 27th day of Decemher, 1902,) of which the following is a specification.

4 This invention relates to apparatus for loading coal, sand, and other materials into ships, trucks, and other vehicles and transferring I 5 coal from ships, railway-trucks, and other stationary depots, and vice versa.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my apparatus with the bottom in position to release the contents of the bucket; Fig. 2, a cross-section at right angles to Fig. 1 with bottom closed.

The invention consists, essentially, of a bucket or casing A, having a movable bottom B, rods or uprights attached to the bottom, 5 and chains-coupled to the uprights, by which the bucket is raised and handled and by which the bottom is sustained in place. When, however, it is desired to empty the bucket, I release the hold of said chain or chains, rod or 3 rods that sustain the bucket at the bottom and bring into operation other chains or rods connected with the top of the bucket, and so release the chains and the uprights or rods that sustain the bottom of the bucket in place, whereupon the bottom will be allowed to drop out to the extent of the length allowed by the chains or rods, and thereby release the contents of the bucket. To eflect this, the bottom B is provided with U-shaped uprights C, 4 sliding between guides D on the inside of the bucket A, and these uprights have a pair of yokes G. Said yokes are connected by a cross-piece E, at the top of which is coupled lines in Fig. 1. When it is desired to empty the bucket, the hold on the chains f is released, and the handle G, which is connected to the top of the bucket, is brought into operation. The bottom B is therefore no longer 5 5 sustained in place, but will drop to the extent of the length allowed by the long shackles of the chains f and the contents of the bucket be at once discharged. The shackles F coming against the handle G prevent the bottom falling too far, as shown by the full lines in Fig. 1. In order to facilitate the emptying of the bucket and to prevent any breakage taking place when it is desired to empty the bucket, the bottom is made in convex or other 5 suitable shape allowing of the free egress of the contents of the bucket.

In use the bucket is automatically emptied by releasing the bottom while still retaining control thereof by means of the chain or 7 chains, rod or rods, or other means of attachment fixed to the center, corners, or other portion of the bottom and (or) the top of the bucket.

I declare that what I claim is 1. A device of the character described comprising a casing, guides secured to the inner surface of said casing, a movable bottom provided with uprights engaging said guides upon the inner surface of said casing, and means connected to said casing and uprights for limiting the movement of said bottom.

A bucket comprising a casing, a movable bottom secured thereto, said bottom provided with a plurality of uprights, said uprights en- 5 gaging guides secured to the inner surface of the casing, and flexible means secured to said uprights and engaging fixed means upon the casing for limiting the movement of the bottom. 9

3. A bucket comprising a casing, guides secured to said casing upon its inner face, a movable bottom for said bucket provided with U-shaped uprights, a connecting member secured to said uprights near the top, pivoted means secured to said connecting member and engaging rigid means upon said casing for retaining the bottom in an assembled position with said casing.

42- A bucket comprising a cylindrical cas- I00 ing having a bail secured thereto, a series of parallel guides secured to the inner face thereof, a removable bottom provided with a pair of yoked uprights connected to said bottom, a cross-piece assembled with said uprights, a pair of shackles secured to said cross-piece a'nd encircling said bail secured to the casing, and flexible means connecting said shackles.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a casing provided with guides upon its interior surface, a moving bottom provided with uprights, a cross-piece connecting saiduprights, pivoted shackles secured to said cross-piece near opposite sides of the inner face of the casing, a handle secured to said casing and encircled by said shackles, and lifting means connected with said shackles.

A bucket comprising a casing provided with a movable conical bottom, said bottom having U-shaped means formed upon the inner face thereof, pivoted means detachably se cured to said means formed upon the bottom and engaging fixed means carried by the easing for limiting the movement of said casing and its bottom.

7 A bucket comprising a casing having a bail secured thereto, a convex-concave bottom therefor provided with rigid means extending in a vertical position and engaging guiding means formed upon the inner face of the casing, pivoted means connected to said rigid means secured to the bottom engaging said bail secured to the casing for limiting the movements and retaining the parts in an assembled position.

8. In a bucket, amovable bottom, uprights attached thereto, guides on the inside of the bucket between which the uprights slide, a cross-piece at the top of these uprights, chains coupled to said cross-piece, so as to lift the bottom up against the bottom of the bucket,

and a handle or its equivalent attached to the top of the bucket, whereby if the hold on the chains that sustain the bucket from the bottom is released, and the chains that support the handle of the bucket from the top are brought into operation, the bottom will be allowed to drop out to the extent of the length allowed by the chains, thereby releasing the contents of the bucket.

9. A bucket comprising a casing, a movable bottom secured thereto, said bottom provided with a plurality of means extending vertically therefrom, said means engaging means secured to the inner surface of the casing, and means secured to said vertical extending means and engaging fixed means upon the casing for limiting the movement of the bottom.
