UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. BROWN, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN vDUMPlNCi-TUBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,808, dated March 3,1863.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BROWN, of Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Skips or Dumping-Tubs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the acompanyi n g drawings, making a part of this specification, and
' to the letters of reference marked thereon.v
This invention relates I t-o handling ore, earth, coal, and other similar substances, and is used principally in connection with the apparatus for transporting, raising, lowering, and placing burdens, for which a patent was issued to meon the 2d day of January, 1855; but it may be used with ordinary d'errioks or cranes or other means of lifting andrtransportation.
The object of my invention is to discharge the'material that is being handled from the tub in which it is transported withas little power specially applied to that purpose as may be possible and consistent with security; and it consists of a tub, or skipf7 as it is technically called, in which the material is'loaded and transported, and from which it is discharged bythe action of gravity simply by releasing a catch or detent.
To enable others skilled in the art to. make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, with refI erence to the drawings, in which- Figures 1 and`2 are respectively a partial end view and a side elevation of the saine.
The'skip or tub a, b c dis hung upon the pivots e, placed on each of its two sides, by which it is suspended by the armsffroin the cross-bar g. When the tub is empty, it hangs as shown by the continuous lines of the drawings, and it is held in that position by thel vibratin g bar h., which is hung on the'pivot-bolts i on each side ofthe tub in such a way that the part passing around the back of the tub preponderates over the anterior part and rests upon the brackets k. The anterior ends of the vibrating vbar h carry segments of a circle, Z, into each of which is formed a slot for the reception oi' the pins m, secured in the arms f.
The position of the pivots e, by which the tub is hung, is determinedlby the positionsof the respective centers of .gravity-ot' the mass when the tub is empty, and when it is filled,AA in such amanner that it will hang as described whenthe center of gravity has been ,raised by filling it full ot' earth, ore, or coal; V,and it vdischarges its contents' by tilting, as described, and shown in dotted lines on the drawings, when the preponderating part of the vibrating bar h has been raised sufficient-l y to 'clear the slots of the segments Zi'rom the pins m', as is also shown by dotted lines, and permits the gravitation ot' the mass to operate independent of the restraint of the bar. The vibrating bar may tub has reached its' destination, or it may be operated by atrip-line by which the tub may be dumped at any point desired.
The extent ot' the rotation ot' the tub in discharging its load is determined by the horns n striking the bars f. When the tub has been emptied, the preponderance of the bottom re stores it to its lnormal position, in which it is held' by the pins m, which slide over the segments and fall again into the slots therein, as above described.
T he tub and the details ot' the arrangement for its suspension may be modified so as to present adiiierent appearance from that shown in the drawingsfivit-hout departing from the principle of 'my invention, which consists in adjusting the Vpoint of suspension relatively to the centers' 'of gravity in such a manner that the tub will be top up when empty and will be reversed when filled, subject to the condition, however, in this latter alternative, that it is'not otherwise restrained.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The' skip or tub, balanced and restrained required, in the manner and for the purpose when it is empty, and will tiltover forward be worked by hand when the substantially as described, and dumped when
