. STOP-MOTION FOR DRAWING-ROLLS- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,965, dated June 7, 1904..

To all w/wm it may concern:
. Be it known that I, ALFRED HOLMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Valley Falls, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stop-Motions for Drawing-Rolls, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in stop-motions for the drawing-rolls of anism intermediate the drawing-rolls and the shipper-operating shaft, whereby the lifting of atop roll by the lap winding on a roll operates to raise a lever in the stop-motion mechanism to engage With a stop on the shipper-operating shaft, thereby stopping the revolution of the shaft and throwing the shipper to stop the machine.
My invention consists in the peculiar. and novel construction of a stop-motion for drawing-rolls of ribbon-lap or similar machines, said stop-motion having a pivoted lever adapted to connect with a stop on the shipper-0perating shaft, means consisting of rods under the lever supported on the weight-hooks to raise the lever when the top rolls are lifted by the lap winding on the rolls and means for adjusting the operative position of the pivoted lever, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a front view of part of a ribbonlap' machine, showing my improved stop-motion connected to a set of drawing-rolls. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line X X of Fig. 1, showing the stop-motion in its inoperative position; and Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the mechanism on the shipperoperating shaft to throw the shipper when the revolution of the shaft is stopped by the stopmotion. v l

The top-roll weights (0 a are hung on the top-roll shafts by the weight-hooks a a, the upper hooked ends a, a of which are hooked over the shafts of the top rolls and the lower hooked ends a a hooked into eyes in the weight-supports. The operating-lever (Z is pivoted at its fulcrum endd to the bearing 0 and has the hooked end (Z This lever extends over the rods?) 5 and under the shipper-lever shaft 0, on which is secured the three-arm stop 0 in a position for the hooked end of the operating-lever (Z to engage with it. On the operating-lever d is secured the block 6?, having the adj usting-pin cl, in screwthread engagement with the block and bearing on the-topof the front rail a. The adjusting-pin d adjusts the operative position -of the lever d up and down and is locked in the adjusted position by the lock-nut d On .theshipper-operating shaft 0 is the beveledtoothed clutch 0 one half of which is fixed on the shaft 0 and the other half loose on the shaft. It is held together by the coiled spring 6 placed intermediate the end of the clutch and the bearing for the shaft. The shipperarm 6* bears on the end of the loose half of the clutch. The lap is fed through the drawing-rolls in the direction of the arrow S, and the shipper-operating shaft revolves in the direction of the arrow t, as shown in Fig. 2.
In the operation of my improved stop-motion for the drawing-rolls of ribbon-lap or similar machines the breaking of the lap in the rolls operates the stop-motion by the end of the lap winding up on the nearestv roll and raising the top roll out of its normal position.
The lifting of one of the top rolls a a raises one of the rods I) b by the hooks a a, which in turn lifts the operating-lever (Z to bring the hooked end (Z into engagement with one of the arms of the stop a on the shipper-operating shaft 6, stopping the revolution of the shaft. In the sudden stopping of the shaft the loose half of the clutch e continues to revolve by its momentum, the bevel-teeth of the clutch forcing it lengthwise on the shaft against the tension of the spring 0 and moving the shipper-arm e outward, as shown in broken lines in Fig. 3. The outward movementof the shipper-arm operates to stop the machine.
By the use of my improved stop-motion for drawing-rolls the loss in waste and the breaking of gearing is practically eliminated and a better result is attained than has heretofore been done.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a stop-motion for drawing-rolls, the combination with the drawing-rolls, weighthooks on the top rolls, a shipper-operating shaft, and a stop on the shipper-operating shaft, of a pivoted lever having its free end shaped to engage with a stop on the shipperoperating shaft, and rods supported on the weight-hooks under the pivoted lever, for the purpose as described.
2. In a stop-motion for drawing-rolls, the combination with the drawing-rolls, weight-- hooks on the top rolls, a shipper-operating shaft, and a stop on the shipper-operating shaft, of a lever pix'oted at one end to a fixed support and having its free end shaped to engage with a stop on the shipperoperating shaft, rods supported in theweight-hooks under the lever, and means for adjusting the operative position of the lever, as described.
3. In a stop-motion for drawing-rolls, the combination of the front raila, supporting the roll-stands a a, the bottom rolls a."
