STOP-MOTION FOR RAILWAY DRAWING-HEADS.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMINA O. PAIGE, of Lowell, in the count-y of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Stop-Motion for Railway Drawing-Heads to be Used in Cotton-Mills; and I hereby declare that the following specification, in connection with the accompanying' drawings and references marked thereon, constitute a lucid, clear, and exact description of the construction, application, and use of the same.
In referring to the said drawings, Figure 1, denotes a plan or top view. Fig. 2, a front side elevation. Fig. 3, an end elevation. Fig. 4t, a section on line A, B, Fig. 1.
I am not aware of any invention for stop motion to a rail way drawing head and its connected cards, adjustably or otherwise, and my invention or stop motion is designed expressly to prevent unevenness or improper reduction in the sliver, and to operate or stop a rail way drawing' head, and carding engines connected thereto which can only operate upon the cotton, or sliver, before, but not after it becomes drawing.
Invention-The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of hinged clearers, both above and below all the drawing rollers, and coming in contact with the entire length of each of these rollers, to perform the functions of constantly cleaning or wiping them their entire length, and also to readily and certainly detect any, and the least improper accumulation of sliver on any portion of any or all of the upper and lower drawing rollers, to instantly stop the railway drawing head, and all the connected cards by the adjustable connection of both these same clearers, for convenience in primary construction and subsequent use; with catch lever, slide rod, and shipper arranged and operated as hereinafter described. Also, in the calender roller, carried by swinging frame, and so arranged, adjustably, for convenience in primary construction, as well as subsequent use, with catch lever, slide rod, and shipper; that any partial disruption, unevenness, or material reduction of the sliver will at once stop the machine and connected cards to allow for increase or to regulate the sliver, by the dropping of the calender roll, for producing and retaining a uniform sliver in the manner hereafter seen, as distinguished from stop motions applied to drawing, roving, and slubbing 31,398, dated February 12, 1861.

Construction-To enable persons skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and carry out the same I will describe it as follows; first stating that the railway drawing head, and its combination with a number of carding engines, forms no part of my invention, neither does the stop motions applied to the drawing,
roving, and slubbing frames form any part of my invention, they being constructed for a different purpose, and operate in a different manner; and do not perform the function of regulating' the size and weight of sliver, or drawing. The purpose of the railway drawing head is to run in connection with a series of carding engines (ten more or less not shown) and to receive from them the several slivers, endless in length, made by the cards, and to condense and draw or stretch them into one by a series of rolls, the purpose of my invention being, when embodied in and connected with the railway drawing head, and its connected cards, to malte or produce an4 endless sliver of uniform size and weight its entire length by not allowing any but a suitable sliver to be made. y 4
The table of the railway drawing head, is seen at A, and its' end supports at B.. Two stands seen at C, are erected upon and secured to table A. In these stands I suspend the drawing rollers D, E, and F, so as to freely turn or revolve therein. These rolls are geared together by gears Gr, and intermediates I-I.
I construct two clearers seen atI and J, and hinge them at K, in stands C, and so arrange these clearers that they will come in contact with' the entire length of all the drawing rollers D, E, and F, for two purposes, first to etfectually, and constantly clean or wipe these rollers their ent-ire length and second to instantly stop the railway drawing head, and all its connected cards if any sliver accumulates on any portion of the upper or lower drawing rollers, these clearers being connected, adjustably, by arm D2, and rod E2 with catch lever Z, operating slide rod IV, and shipper U, with, and forming the stop motion, for both regulating, adjusting, and operat-ing it in its primary construction and also in its subsequent use. 1
The drawing rollers seen at D, are larger in diameter than, those back of them and seen at E, and so in turn those seen at E, may be larger than those seen at F, the purpose being to draw, and condense the several slivers coming from the cards, into one, and thus deliver it through guiding trumpet N, (hinged by its arm T, on rod Q,) to calendering rollers L and M, which then becomes drawing, and is delivered to revolving and receiving can, not shown.
I construct a shipper seen at U, sliding in brackets X, and X2, to ship by its fork a,
the belts not shown) which drives the rail way drawing head, and parts of al the carding engines moving the sliver from the cards; this shipper is constantly pressed by spring V, in such direction, as that if unrestrained it would slide the belts (not shown) on to loose pulleys (not shown), and stop the machine, and that portion of all the cards moving the sliver, but is rest-rained by catch dog A3, swinging on brackets X2, and catching into notch e, formed in shipper U and thus holding it, and keeping the machine, and that portion of all the connected cards moving the sliver, in operation, after the belts (not shown) are shipped on; by driving pulleys (not shown) by movement of shipper II.
I construct a slide rod W, which has a notch c, formed in its inner end into which the catch lever Z, is forced by spring A2, or by its own weight when the rod WV, is slid forward, and the machine or rail way drawing head and its carding engines connected are put in operation, this rod slides in brackets Y, and Y2, and is constantly pressed back by spring A4, and when the catch lever Z, is disconnected the rod W, will instantly fly back by means of spring A4 and impart a percussive blow to the end z', of catch dog A3, and instantly disconnectits opposite end from notch e, in shipper U, which then instantly ships the belts by the force of spring V, on to loose pulleys (not shown) and stops the machine and that portion of all the cards, moving the sliver, and, the sliver itself.
The swinging stand P, is provided with an arm B2, and screw C2, threaded through this arm, the lower end of which screw comes in contact with outer end of catch lever Z, so that when the sliver becomes uneven breaks down or decreases in size by breakage of its strands or otherwise the calender roll M and swinging frame P, will drop; carrying with it the arm B2, and screw C2, by which my stopmotion is made ad-A justable and regulated in position both in its construction; and in its subsequentv use, by turning screw C2, up or down, and which screw C2, when properly positioned by being so adjustable uncatches the catch` lever Z, from slide rod W, and this in turn uncatches the shipper U, and the drawing head, and that portion of all the cards moving the sliver, and the sliver itself is at once stopped, and this is eifected if the sliver is either uneven, broken, or becomes improperly reduced; which is at once detected by dropping of calender roll IWI, which motion is transmitted by parts arranged as just described, to the shipper to operate the machines in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
The handles A, and B5, in shipper U, and slide rod IV, are for conveniently shipping the belts and putting the machines in motion. This shipper is so connected to the several carding engines (ten more or less) which are connected with the rail way drawing head; that my device stops that part of all the cards moving the sliver as well as the rail way drawing head, for governing and controlling the character of the sliver; which is effected and carried out by my arrangement and combination of frame P, with its calender roll M, stand B2, and screw C2, with lever Z, slide rod W, and shipper U, embodied with the rail way drawing head, in the manner described for stopping it, and that portion of each connected card that moves the sliver, whenever the latter becomes uneven or improperly reduced.
Operation-The operation of my invention is apparent from the preceding description of construction, and the advantages so obvious that further description will be unnecessary, after simply, again calling attention to the fact that no automatic stop motion, adjustable or otherwise, and for governing and controlling the endless sliver, as to weight and size and instantly stopping the railway drawing head, and connected cards whenever the sliver is uneven or imperfect, has heretofore been invented, or applied to a rail way drawing head, and that the sliver very often breaks down in part, and frequently in the operatives absence, and causes a great waste of cotton, a delay in readjusting the sliver, and frequent breaking or disarrangement of the rail way drawing head, and delay in repairs, and stoppage of all the carding engines connected therewith, all these heretofore existing evils are obviated by my invention, by never allowing them to occur, all in the manner herein described and set forth.
Having thus described my invention, I will state my disclaimer and claim as follows.
I disclaim the stop motions heretofore applied to drawing, slubbing, and roving frames, for they are different from, and cannot be made to answer the purpose of my invention.
What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters-Patent isdrawing rollers, to instantly stop the railway drawing head and all the connected cards, by the adjustable combination of both these saine clearers, for convenience in priniary construction, and subsequent use, with catch lever Z, slide rod lV, and shipper U, and operated in the nianner set forth.
2. rlhe swinging france P carrying the calender roll M, and the stand B2 and screw C2, when combined, and so arranged with catch lever Z, slide rod lV, and shipper U, as described for regulating my stop motion in its priinary construction, as well as adjusting it in its subsequent use; these parts being embodied with railway drawing head, and connected cards, and so operated by calender roll M, as to produce an even and uniform endless sliver; by instantly detecting and stopping the movement of the railway drawing head, and that portion of every connected card for nioving the silver, as described, whenever the latter becomes uneven or improperly reduced.
