Description

PATENTED JUNE 7, 1904;
J. s. WEATHERS.
GLEVE.
APPLIOATION 21mm I. Is. 1904.-
NO MODEL;
UNITED STATES Patented June 7 1904.
PATENT I OFFICE.
JOSEPH S. WEATHERS, OF WINDSOR, MISSOURI.
CLEVIS- srncrnroA'rron forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,863, dated. June 7, 1904.
Application filed January 18, 1904. Serial No. 189,516. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPI-I S. WEATHERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Windsor, in the county of Henry and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful This invention relates to new and useful. lmprovements in clevises designed for varlous uses, and comprises a device of this character which is made up, preferably, of two link-sections pivoted together and so constructed as to be securely locked together and easily and quickly adjusted, so as to unlock when desired to detach the clevis from any object.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in combinations of parts,which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim. Y
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figurel is a perspective view of my improved clevis. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the end of one of the clevis members. Fig. 3 is a view showing the end of the lock: ing-pin carried by'one of the members. Fig. 4 is an. enlarged detail view showing a slot and recess in one of the ends of the clevis members. Fig. 5 is a detail view of a portion of the clevis member carrying a pivotal pin. Fig. 6 is a detail view of one end of a clevis member which is mounted upon the pivot-pin shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a sectional view through the portion of the clevis member carrying the pin. Fig. 8 is a detail view of the pivotal ends of the members of the clevis.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A and B designate the two links of a clevis member, one of said members A having an integral pin A projecting at right angles therefrom near one end, the other end of said member A being provided with an angled slot (0, a detail of which is shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, said slot being adapted to receive a pin D, which is either fixed to or integral with the clevis-section B. In the event of the pin D being made integral with the clevis-section B it is made without a head, which is flattened after the two sections are pivoted together. The end of the integral pin A has notches E formed at locations diametrically opposite, and the end of the pin A is adapted to enter a slot F, formed in the end of the clevis member B. V The walls of said slot F have shoulders F, forming a-contracted portion upon the opposite walls of the slot, over which the two notches are adapted to slide when a longitudinal movement is imparted to the clevis member A in one direction for the purpose of lockingthe swinging ends of the clevis members together. v In locking the clevis the integral pin A is inserted through the enlarged end of the slot F until the notches on the opposite portionsof said pin come in alinement with the contracted projecting walls of the slot, and when the parts of the clevis are in these relative positions the clevis members may be given slight longitudinal movements, which will cause the notches in the pin A to engage the contracted portions of the walls in the slot F, and the pin D will engage-the offset A Fig. 6 of the drawings, which. will serve to hold the ends of the clevis locked until the pin is raised out of the oifset A which will allow the notched end of the pin to be moved out of engagement with the contracted projecting walls of the slot F, allowing the clevis to swing.
While I have shown a particular construction of clevis embodying the features of my invention, it will'be understood that I may make alterations, if desired, in certain details of the constructionof the device without in any way departing from the spirit of the in- Patent, is
A clevis comprising two sections A and B, a head ed pin projecting from said section B and adapted to engage an angular slot adjacent to one end of said section A, a pin A projecting from sectlon A, sald pin having recesses E at locations diametrleally opposite, ad aeent to In testimony whereof I hereunto :iflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
