UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE.v
EPHRAIM B. COBAUGH, OF MIDDLETOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED BRACE AND RACK FOR TENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,582, dated May 31, 1904.
Application filed December 31, 1902. Serial No. 137,827. (No model.) I
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EPHRAIM B. GoBAUeH,
' a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and-use ful Improvements in Tents, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined braces and racks for tents; and its object is to provide a brace which may be detachably secured to the uprights or supports of a tent and which is provided with suitable means whereby clothing,-
' firearms, and other articles may be readily suspended therefrom.
With the above and other objects in'view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of the standards and cross-bar of a tent and showing my improved brace-bar in position thereon, the position of the tent in relation to the supports, &c., being disclosed in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the upper portion of I one of the supports and showing the adjacent ends ofthe uprights 1.
ends of the cross-bar and brace-rod detached. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the brace-bar shown in inverted position.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, l 1 are uprights of a tent, to the upper end of one of which is hinged a cross-bar 2, having a tongue 3 at each end adapted to rest within grooves 4, formed in the upper These uprights and the cross-bar are adapted to support-a tent of any suitable form, and the uprights are braced in vertical position by means of a rod 5. Dovetails 6 are preferably formed at the ends of this rod, and each is adapted tobe seated in a tapered groove 7 V-shaped in cross-section and formed within a casting 8, secured to the inner face of standard 1. It will be understood that when the ends of the bracerod are placed within these grooves 7 and drawn downward thereinto the two uprights 1 will be firmly secured together and braced.
A series of hooks 9 are secured to one or both of the sides of brace-bar 5, and bolts 10' which may be placed rifles, fishing-rods, &c.
Clothing, baskets, and other similar articles may be suspended from the hooks 9, before referred to.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1 The combination with the standards of a tent and a cross-bar detachably connecting the same; of a holding device upon each standard and having a tapered dovetail groove therein, a brace-rod arranged between the standards, dovetails integral therewith and adapted to be seated within the grooved holding devices, a strip centrally pivoted to the bracerod and having its ends upwardly curved to form brackets, said ends being adapted to be swung at angles to the-brace-rods, and hooks extending from the rod.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EPHRAIM B. GOBAUGH.
