To all whom, if 111,04/ concern,.-
' Beit known that I, JOHN GOETZ, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Threading-'Lathe Tools;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide simple, economical, andefcient time-saving 3, a side elevation of the tool; Fig. 4C, a transverse section of said tool on the plane indicated byline i 4 in said first figure, and Fig. 5 an end elevation of the tool-body.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates an angular block of suitable metal that constitutes the body of my improved threading-tool, this block being shown as having greater length than breadth or thickness. The block is taper-pointed and shouldered at either or both ends, as may be most convenient, and. when both ends of the block are thus made the tool as a whole is reversible for either right or left hand thread-cutting.
A portion of one side of each taperedl end of the tool intersects a shoulder of same at an angle of predetermined degree, preferably a right angle, and a corresponding portion of the other side of said tapered end of the tool intersects the shoulder opposite the one aforesaid at a predetermined angle less than a right angle. The tool is held in working position byv ordinary means common to threading' lathes as ordinarily constructed. Each shoulder of the block is preferably provided with a series of longitudinal acute-angle grooves 1n its outer face parallel to each other and the portion of said block, there being at least one groove in said Shoulder, where the latter intersects said thinner taper portion of the aforesaid block. Forwardly converging blades B have match-fit in shoulder-grooves of the block and in converging concave grooves d of a plate C, that is clamped by a in place.
vthe corresponding taper end of the block A, f as herein shown or otherwise, to provide for necessary clearance in a'thread-groove, and when there is a plurality of grooves in the blade-opposing shoulders the set of said blades aforesaid when less clearance is required. Where the pitch of the thread is slight in proportion to the diameter of the screw, it is only the advancing side of the tool that requires clearance, and the other side may be said screw.
The faces j of the blades are ground more or less bevel to present a keen cutting edge to the work, and said blades are also ground on their inner sides opposite said cutting edges to allow their points to come close together in any size of thread-groove.-
The blades have good support under their cutting edges,and by means of the plate C and cap-screw e they are held firmly in place to permit the taking of a large cut, both cutting at the same time without tearing the material on which they operate. The cutting edges of the blades are also close to the toolbody, and said blades being held rigidly in place they cut without chattering.
Being detached from the body ofthe tool, the blades are sharpened by Slightly grinding their cutting edges; but the removal and reterfere with the original adjustment of the tool as a whole with respect to the shape of the thread on which it operates. Hence no readjustment of said tool is necessary, no matter how often the blades are sharpened.

A threading-lathe tool comprising a taper-pointed and shouldered' bod y-block having the sides of its taper portion at predetermined angles to its shoulders, a plate, a cap-screw holding the plate to said block, and forwardlyconverging detachable blades bound between the block-shoulders and said plate.
2. A threading-lathe tool comprising a taper-pointed and shouldered body-block having the sides of its taperpportion at predetermined angles to its shoulders, a plate, a cap-screw holding the plate to said block, and forwardlyconverging blades having match-ht in grooves with which said shoulders and plate are provided.
3. A threading-lathe tool comprising a taper-pointed and shouldered body-block having the sides of its taper portion at predetermined angles to its shoulders, aplate, a cap-screw holding the plate to said block, and forwardlyconverging detachable blades bound between the block-shoulders and said plate and having faces thereof bevel-ground to present keen cutting edges to the work.
4. A threading-lathe tool comprising a taper-pointed and shouldered body-block having the sides of its taper portion at predetermined angles to the shoulders and each shoulder provided with a series of longitudinal face-grooves parallel to each other and the adjacent taper side of the block-point, a plate, a cap-screw holding the plate to said block, and detachable blades held in match-fit with block-shoulder grooves and forwardly converging concave grooves of said plate.
5. A threading-lathe tool comprising a taper-pointed and shouldered body-block having the sidesof its taper portion at predetermined angles to its shoulders, a plate, a cap-screw holding the plate to said block, and forwardlyconverging detachable blades that are bound between the block-shoulders and said plate and have their inner sides ground opposite their cutting edges to permit of their points coming close together.
