Description
gleiten taire @anni @frn J. J. ANDRE-W, 'F SALTILLOVILLE, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 76,137, dated March 31, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN STRAW-GUTTERS.
'IO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, J. J. ANDREW, of Saltilloville, in the county of Washington, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Straw-Critters; and do hereb'y declare that the. following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had 'to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specifica-tion, A represents thebox of a straw-cutter, Vwhich may be constructed in'any of the known and usual ways. Secured in suitable bearingsv beside and to the legs of the bo'x, is a horizontal shaft, B. This shaft is provided at one end with a balance-wheel, O, tol which is attached a handle, and at the other end with a crank, D. It is also provided with a screw-thread, Gr, which catches into the teeth of a gear-wheel, I-I, for the purpose of' iving` motion to the f eedroller Lupen whose shaft the wheel I-I is secured. E represents'a straight steel knife, which crosses thethroat of the box, and which is kept close to said throat, by means of the guide and keeper F. J represents a rod, one end of which is pivoted to the front of the box, and the other, after being bent at right angles, is passed through a hole to receive it in one end of the knife. The other end of the knife is provided with a hole into which passes the handle of the crank, D. The knife cuts against the bar a at the bottom of the throat. The straw is fed in as usual through the throat to the knife. The knifeis given a reciprocating-motion by means of the shaft B, with its crank, and at the same time it has a draw out. The operator feeds the stra-w or hay in to the box Vfrom its rear end, with his left hand, while he turns the wheel C'whieh stands Vat this end of the box with his right hand. The feed-roller I is provided with arms, as is customary for-feeding in the straw.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The shaft B, providedwith its balance-wheel, screw-thread, and crank, in combi-nation with the knife E, and bar or rod J, as and for the purpose set forth. l
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 5th day of September, 1867.
J. J. ANDREW.
