PATENT OFFI E.
OF; SHELBYVILLE, ILLINOIS.
METAL-CUTTING SHEARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters retent No. 761,314," dated May 31, 1904 Application filed September 14,1903. Serial No. 173,134. (No model.)
I To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER MARX- MILLER, a citizen of the-UnitedStates, residing at Shelbyville, in the county-of Shelby. and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal-Cutdo so in a perfect manner and with compara tive ease.
Another object of my invention is the pro- Vision of a metal-cutting shears which is the embodiment of simplicity, durability, and cheapness, thus producing a thoroughly efficient and practical device.
In thedrawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the shears open ready to receive the metal to be cut. taken from the opposite side with the jaws closed after having made a cut. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the movable jaw and connections disconnected. Fig. 4 is a section through the eccentric and connections.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the base, which is adapted to rest upon any suitable "place or may be boltedndown to insure against the movement thereof when making heavy cuts. Formed integral with the base and extending upward therefrom is the'plate or large strip or rib B, whichis provided with the recess or slot G to receive the removable stationary cutter-blade D, which is securely heldfin place by means of the brace or clamping-plate E. Pivotally connected to the rib, near one end thereof, by means of the bolt F, is the removable, jaw or member G, which is provided with the recess or slot H similar to the slot C and which when the jaw is closed is substantially in line therewith. Mounted in said recess and removable therefrom is a cutter-blade J ,fwhich is held in said recess by means of the brace or clampingplate K. The arm M is connected pivotally in the slotted end N of the jaw Gr, the ring or collar P being formed integral with the arm Fig. 2 is a side elevation ;M. This ringeorcollar surrounds the eccen- Qtric Q, carried by the shaft L. so that when the handle 0 is operated the shaft L is rogtated, in turn operating the arm M, and conjsequently the jaw From the foregoing description, taken in {connection with the drawings, the usefulness Land operation of my improved shears is readily- .understood and its numerous advantages are fully appreciated.
It is evident that Iprovide a metal-cutting shears which are very simple, durable, and inexpensive in construction and thoroughly eflicient and practical in use.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A metal-cutting shears, comprising a base, a strip or rib at right angles thereto, a
cutter-blade carried by said strip, a pivotally-' mounted jaw connected to said strip, a cutter-blade carried thereby, an eccentric-arm connected to said jaw and strip, and a handle for operating the arm to open and close the aw.
2. A metal-cutting shears, comprising a base, a strip rising therefrom and provided with a recess in its upper edge, a cutter-blade removably attached in said recess, a jaw pivotally connected to said strip and provided with a recess in its lower edgeopposite the recess of the strip, a cutter-blade removably attached in said recess, an eccentric-arm connected to said jaw and strip, and a handle for operating the arm to open and close the jaw.
3. A metal-cutting shears comprising a base, a strip rising therefrom provided with a recess in its upper edge, a clamping-plate removably secured to said strip and opposed 4:. A metal-cutting shears, comprising a base, a strip rising therefrom provided with a recess in its upper edge, a clamping-plate removably secured to said strip and opposed to said recess, a cutting-blade carried by said clamping-plate and fitting in said recess, a jaw pivotally connected to said strip and provided with a recess in its lower edge mounted to aline substantially with the recess of the strip when the lower-edge of the jaw is substantially parallel with the upper edge of the strip, a clamping-plate secured to said jaw and opposed to the recess, a cutting-blade carried by said clamping-plate fitting in said recess, a shaft journaled in the strip, an eccentric carried by said shaft, a ring surround ing said eccentric and provided with an arm which is pivotally connected to the free end of the jaw, and a handle connected to the shaft for rotating the same to operate the jaws.
5. A metal-cutting shears, comprising a base, means carrying a cutter supported byshaft journaled in the base, an eccentric carried by said shaft, a ring surrounding said eccentric and provided with an arm which is pivotally connected to the free end. of the jaw, and a handle connected to the shaft for retating the same to operate the jaws.
6. A metal-cutting shears, comprising a base, a strip rising therefrom at right angles thereto, a cutter-blade removably carried by said strip,- a jaw pivotally connected to said strip, a blade removably carried by said jaw, a shaft journaled in the strip, an eccentric carried by said shaft, a ring surrounding said eccentric and provided with an arm which is pivotally connected to the free end of the jaw, and a handle connected to the shaft for rotating the same to'operate the jaws.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTOPHER MARXMIIALER.
