Patented May 31, A1904.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DARLINGTON T. JONES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE DOMESTIC UTILITIES COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORI DISH-WASHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,078, dated May 31, 1904. i
` Application iiled `1nuarj`9,1903. Serial No. 138,362. (No model.)
i i following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a fountain-brush which is more particularly adapted to the washing of dishes, but which can be used for a great variety of cleansing purposes.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, andl economical device comprising a iiexible tube one end of which can be quickly and conveniently fastened over the mouth of a water -faucet and a brush connected to the other end of said flexible tube and so constructed that the water from the faucet can percolate or pass therethrough, so as to enable the operator to scrub and wash at the same time; and a further object of the invention is to spread the water while the device is in use and to automatically shut the flow of the same when the brush is released. ThisI accomplish by the means hereinafter described, and as particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figurel is asideelevation Y same be slipped over the mouth of the faucet and fastened thereto by its own constriction or by the aid of an ordinary clip a.
C represents a brush, preferably of a circular shape, which has screwed into and through the center of its back a cylindrical handle I, which is tubular throughout its length. y The end of the tube extending through the back of the brush is closedv inany suitable man-` ner and has longitudinal and radial perforations therein to permit the water iiowing through said handle to escape the small jets in every direction into the bristles or brush material. I prefer to close the end of the Ahandle extending through theback of the brush by a hollow plug D,'and in order that the bore of this plug may be aboutthe same diameter as the bore of the handle I increase the diameter of the latter adjacent to said end and provide the same with a female thread, which isv engaged by the threaded sides of the plug. The threaded portion of the plug does not extend clear to its head, thus limiting the extent to which said plug can be screwed into the bore of the handle. In order to secure the brush to the end of the tube B, the latter is inserted into the bore of the handle such a distance that its end will extend into the screw-threaded portion thereof and screw home the plug, the beveledend of which latter as it advances enters the mouth of the tube B and spreads the same and clamps said spread portion between it and the shoulder made by increasing the'diameter of the bore of the handle. The outer end of the plug is provided with a head the flanged circumferential edges d of which are preferably provided with an junder'cut bevel, and the smooth barrel ofthe plug next this flanged edge al is provided with a series of radial apertures e c. If desired, the head of the plug may also have one or more longitudinal perforations f therethrough. The head of the plug is preferably provided with a short stiff brush, which I prefer to makestiifer than the bristles of the brush C. v
In operation the operator grasps the handle of the brush, which is of suiiicient length to prevent' the rubber tube from making any contact with the hand, and then turns on the water, which iiows through said tube and through the tubular handle of the brush and into the brush ber, thus enabling the operator to scrub and rinse the dishes or other object he is washing and at the same time-greatly expedite the cleansing thereof without the necessity of employing a wash-pan, dish-rag, and other utensils such as are now usually employed. When through with the brush, the ilow of water can be yturned off at the faucet. In view, however, of the waste of water that would probably be caused by the carelessness of menials in this respect I have provided means for automatically shutting off the iiow of water the instant the brush is released.
rlhis consists of a spring G, which is secured to the portion of the handle nearest the brush, which extends longitudinally to a point just beyond the opposite end of the handle and is then bent transversely over the said end and past the mouth of the bore thereof and is provided with an opening through which the tube passes. In its normalposition the spring Gr draws the tube sidewise, so as to bring the walls of the bore thereof together', and thus shut off the `iiow of the water through the tube. When the handle is grasped, the thumb or fingers press the longitudinal yportion of the springagainst the side of the brush, and thus bring the opening with its transverselybent end in alinement with the bore of the handle and straightens the tube, so that its bore is opened and water will flow therethrough. In order to improve the action of the spring when compressing the tube, I extend the end of the handle on the side of the v bore thereof next the lspring to provide a the spring and the shoulder le, and thus effectually closes the same and shuts off the flow of water therethrough. Y
If desired, I can, as shown in Fig'. 3, greatly simplify the preferred construction of my invention by reducing the outer end of the handle K thereof and providing the outer edge of said reduced portion with a bead/t and slipping the spread end ofthe tube over the same. The end of the handle extending through the brush may be closed in any suitable manner, although I have shown a simple form of stopper H. for this purpose. The sides of said extended end of the handle are provided with perforations m, so as to cause the water to be distributed into the brush in everydirection.
I do not desire to be confined to the exact construction of my improved brush as hereinbefore described, as it is apparent that many modifications and changes thereof may be introduced' and adapted without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An article of manufacture comprising a brush, a tubular handle extended through its back and having the bore of its extended end enlarged and threaded, a plug screwed into said end the head of which has a circumferential fiange and the body of which has radial perforations therein next said Harige, and a flexible tube adapted to connect the opposite end of said `handle to a suitable source of water-supply.
2. An article of manufacture comprising a brush, a tubular handle extended through its back and having the bore of its extended end enlarged and threaded, a plug screwed into said end the head of which is provided with a brush and has a circumferential flange and the body of which has radial perforations therein next said liange, and a flexible tube adapted to connect the opposite end of said handle to a suitable source of water-supply.
3. An article of manufacture comprising a brush, a tubular handle extended through its back and having the bore ofits extended end enlarged and threaded, a plug screwed into said end the head of which has a circumferential flangeand the body of. which has radial perforations therein next said flange and a flexible tube adapted to connect the opposite end of said handle to a suitable source of Water-supply said tube entering the bore of the handle and extending into the enlarged portion thereof and its adjacent annular edges spread by and clamped between the end'of the plug and the shoulder of said enlarged portion. f
4. An article of manufacture comprising a brush, a tubular handle extended through its back and having the bore of its extended end enlargedl and threaded, a plug screwed into said end the head of whichis provided with a brush and has a circumferential fiange and the body'of which has radial perforations therein next said ange, and a exible tube adapted to connect the opposite-end of said handle to a suitable source of water-supply, said tube entering the bore of the handle and extending IOO IOS
into the` enlarged portion thereof and its adjacent annular edges spread by and clamped between the end of the plug and the shoulder of said enlarged portion.

6. An article of manufacture comprising a brush, a tubularhandleextended through its back and having its opposite end on one'side of its bore extended to form a shoulder, a flexible tubeadapted to connect the same to a suitable source of water-supply, and a spring, one end of which is secured to said handle near said brush and the opposite end of which iS IIO bent laterally over the adjacent end ofthe handle and its extremity bent or inclined toward the end of said handle.
7. An article of manufacture comprising a brush, a tubular handle extended through its back and having the bore of its extended end enlarged and threaded, a plug screwed into said end the head of which has a circumferential iiange and the body of which has radial perforations therein next said flange, a iiexible tube adapted to connect the opposite end of said handle to a suitable source of watersupply, and a spring-actuated device for automatically stopping the flow of water therethrough when said brush is released.
