THEODORE GRAHAM GRIBBLE, OF MELTON GONSTABLE, ENGLAND.
'TRAMWAY- SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 760,983, dated May 24, 1904.
Application filed January 23, 1903. Serial No. 140,255. (No model.)
To /LZZ whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, THEODORE GRAHAM -GR1BBLE, railway engineer, a subject of the of Norfolk, England, have invented a certain In order that this invention may be clearlyV understood and more easily carried into practice, I have appended hereunto a sheet of drawshown in Fig. 1.
ings, upon which I have illustrated the nature of my said invention.
Figure 1 is a cross-section through the permanent way on the line of a tie-bolt. Eig. 2 is an enlarged cross-section of one of the rails Fig. 3 is an enlarged crosssection of one of the rails shown in Fig. 1, but taken through one of the chairs. Fig. 4 is an elevation of one of the combination fish-plates and chairs looking from the inside of the way. Fig. 5 is an elevation o" one of the intermediate chairs. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of one of the bolt-heads and tubular washers to same. through Fig. 6.
In carrying this invention into effect the rail A is made reversible, with a double head a a2 and two grooves a3 and is partly supported by the chairs B and partly by the concrete C, the lower groove being filled in with concrete, so as to form a base of the whole available width of head, groove, and ange for the bearing of the rail between the chairs. The chairs are formed of a pair of doublecranked angle-bars B B', which grip the rail A at top and bottom and which are made of sufficient length to form sh-plates where they occur at the joints a5 of the rails. The lower anges b2 of the chairs B are attached by bolts Fig. 7 is a cross-section- F to the base-plate E and are provided with slotted holes b3 for the bolt, so as to permit of the side B of the chair after the nut f has been removed being tilted over, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3, sufliciently to allow of the rail A being removed without disturbing the other side, as hereinafter described.
In case the rolling loads should require it, the chairs may be placed upon metallic crossties, which would thentake the base-plates E, the ange of the side still being provided with the slotted bolt-hole for the purpose before described.
The bolts or fastenings H, which pass through the rails and secure the same to the chairs, are provided with socket washers, which are made in two halves .I J' and secured together around the head of the bolt by the thimble K with the socket upon the outer side of the rails. The sockets .I J are made of suflicientlength to permit the end of the bolt or fastening H to be pushed sufficiently back when the bolts are removed and the chair B has been tilted to permit of sufficient clearance for the removal and reversal of the rail A without disturbing the pavement on the outer side of the rail.
The tie-bolts N, which hold the track to gage in the usual manner, are provided at the ends with a right and left hand screw or gib and Cotter-coupling, which is coupled to the screw-bolts or fastenings H, the square heads of which are arranged on the outer side of the rail and furnished with socket-washers .I J of similar construction to those described to the chairs.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
' 1. The combination with the double-headed and grooved reversible tram-rail, of a chair in two sections for supporting the rail at the top and bottom and capable of permitting the rail to be removed without disturbing the pavement on the outer sideof the rail and a concrete foundation to enter the lower groove of the tram-rail and support it across its entir face.
2. The combination with the double-headed and grooved reversible tram-rail, of a chair IOO in two sections for supporting the rail at the and grooved reversible tram-rail and chair of top and bottom and capable of permitting the a tubular or socketed washer in which the head rail to be removed without disturbing the of the bolt or fastening may be set back to pavement on the outer side of the rail, e conallow of the rail being reversed substantially I5 5 crete foundation to enter the lower groove of as Set forth.
