COMBINED lPICTURE-FRAME AND EASEL.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N0. 760,935, dated May 24, 1904. Application filed March 4, 1904:. Serial No. 196,597. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, J ULIUs C. STRAUSS, aciti- Zen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain -new and useful Improvements in a Combined Picture-Frame and Easel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a picture-frame having an easel attachment connected thereto, the parts being so arranged and united that the entire article may be folded into the form of a box when the picture is unexposed.
The invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a perspective view of my picture-frame and easel in open condition. Fig. II is a perspective view of the device in folded condition. Fig. III is an enlarged transverse section taken on line III III, Fig.II. Fig. IV is an enlarged longitudinal section taken on line IV IV, Fig. II. Fig. V is a view showing fragments of the adjoining corners of the easel base and back connected thereto.
1 designates a picture-frame, which maybe of passe-partout form or any other construction. The frame preferably consists of a rim within which the picture A, face-glass B, and backing C are held, as seen in Figs. III and IV.
2 designates'an easel-back that is provided with rims 3, that extend along the side edges and across the top of the back. The pictureframe 1 is connected to thegeasel-back at its top end by a flexible hinge 4, (see Fig. IV,) so that the frame may be swung outwardly with respect to said easel-back or swung inwardly to lie iiatly against the forward face of said back.
5 designates sections of an easel-base, oney of which is united to the easel-back 2 by a flexible hinge 6. (See Figs. kIV and V.) The easel-base sections are united to each other by a fiexible hinge 7. At the side edges of the easel-base sections are rims 7 and at the forward edge of the outer base-section is a rim 8.
9 is a tab secured to the easel-back at its end, to which the picture-frame l is hinged, and 10 is a tab connected to the pi cture-frarne.
When the picture-frame and easel are in .folded condition, the frame lies iatly against the front or inner face of the easel-back 2, and the easel-base is folded into position against the frame, as seen in Figs. II, III, and IV, in which position the rims of the easel-base fit within the rim of the easel-back. In opening the article the easel-back is first raised from the base by grasping the tab 9. The tab l0, at the lower end of the picture-frame, is then grasped and the frame is drawn forwardly, its top end being permitted to swing by reason of the presence of the hinge 4., that unites the frame to the easel-back. The lower end of the picture-frame is drawn to the forward rim 8 of the easel-base and rests thereagainst. The meeting ends of the easel-base sections are then elevated into the position seen in Fig. I, thereby completing the support for the picture-frame. -v
I claim as my inventionp 1. In an article of the character'described, the combination of a picture-frame, an easelback to which said frame is hinged at its upper end only, and an easel-base consisting of a pair of sections hinged to each other and one of which is hinged to said easel-back, and theA other of which is free of connection with said picture-frame, substantially as set forth.
2. In an-article of the character described, the combination of a picture-frame, an easelback to which said frame is hinged, an easel- -base consisting of a pair of sections hinged to each other and one of which is hingedto said easel-back, and the other of which has a rim projecting from its forward edge, substantially as set forth.
3. In an article of the character described, the combination of a picture-frame, an easelback to which said frame is hinged, an easelbase consisting of a pair of sections hinged to each other and one of which is hinged to said easel-back, the other of which has a rim projeeting from the forward edge and both of said consisting of a pair of sections hinged to each sections having rlms projecting from the sides other and one of which 1s hinged to said easelthereof, substantially as set forth. back, substantially as set forth.
4C. In an article of the character described, JULIUS C. STRAUSS. 5 the combination of a picture-frame, an easel- In presence ofbaok to which said frame is hinged and having LEWIS GoDLovE,
rims projecling from its edges, an easel-base E. S. KNIGHT.
