PATENT OFFICE.
IDE-VICE'FOR' OPENING on CLOSING DOORS on GATES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 760,780, dated May 24, 1904.
Application filed September 16 1903. Serial No. 175,708. (No model.) i i v To all whom it may Concern: I
Be it known that I, JOHN FRANCIs GoNNELL, of the city of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles, in the State of California, have invented a new and useful Device for Opening or Closing Doors or Gates, my said device being more especially applicable for opening and closing the doors of elevator-shafts and other inclosures, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description or specification, reference being bad to the annexed drawings and to the letters marked thereon.
My said invention has for its object to operate with ease and practically without noise single doors or gates which are carried or sus: pended by rollers, so as to be easily opened or closed by being moved upon a horizontal bar.
Upon the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation in part of the interior of that portion of an elevator-shaft or other inclosure wherein a single sliding or rolling door is used for opening or closing the doorway therein. The device constituting my invention is shown as it appears when looked at from the interior of the cage or car operated in an elevator shaft and when the sliding door is closed, the open position of the door and the position of the partsof the device operating the door when open being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 1. Fig. 3-.is an elevation, the same as Fig. 1, but showing my device as operated by the lever being moved upward at its outer free end instead of downward, as in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan corresponding'to' Fig. 3.
In all the figures of the drawings the tubes A are constructive parts of the framing of the inclosure of an elevator-shaft wherein a cage or car is operated upward and downward after the manner commonly used in buildings vertical edges of the door B, FigsQl to 4,
Fig. 2 is a part plan corresponding to there is a pivot 61., upon which the bar or lever F is mounted, so that the bar or lever F is Capable of being moved by the attendant or operator in the cage or car of the elevator when the cage or car is stopped at a door or v gateway for the exit or entrance of persons.
The: bar or lever F is capable of movement upon the pivot a through an angle approximating a quadrant or quarter of a circle dur ing the act of opening or closing the door or gate B.that is to say, during the act of moving the door or gate from the closed position shown in full lines in Figs. 1 to l or to the 'open position shown in dotted lines in said lever or bar F by the pivot 0, to be simultaneously raised until both the lever F and the link I, together with the doorB, occupy the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The
outer end of the link I is connected by the pivot d to the stiff spring J, which spring J is rigidly fastened to the tube A or to any other fixed or stationary object. When it is desired to move the door or gate B into the opposite or closed position, then the attendant applies his hand to the door or gate B, causing it to roll, by its supporting-rollers G G,
upon the bar D, which movement being imparted to the door'B causes it to pull the link I and the pivoted bar F gradually into the horizontal position which these parts occupy when the door or gate B is closed, as shown- The weight of the lever F at Figs. 1 and 2. and link I also aids them in descending to the horizontalposition. The spring J by reason of its elasticity prevents a hard or unyielding blow of the door or gate or of the moving parts of the device constituting my invention taking place at the termination of the movement of the said door or gate and the mot eing parts in either directionthat is to say, at the completion of the opening or the closing of the said doors or gates.
For the purpose of preventing a hard blow taking place at the position shown at Figs. 1 and 2 the inner face of the door B is provided with a pad of india-rubber K, riveted thereto. WVith the lower edge of this pad K a portion of the upper edge of the lever F, which is provided with the projecting part Gr, Figs. 1 and 2, comes-into contact when the bar or lever F has reached the horizontal position, as shown at Fig. 1.
As shown at Figs. 3 and 4, the device for opening and .closing the door B is operated when opening the door by raising the outer free end-of the bar or lever F, and the operating parts, together with the door B, occupy the positions shown in dotted lines in Figs. 3 and 4 when the door is opened, and for the balancing or eounterweighting the operative parts of the opening and closing device the free end of the bar or lever F is provided with an adjustable counterweight W, and this e0un' terweight constitutes and serves as the projecting part to apply-the hand to either for depressing or lifting the outer end of the bar or lever F in the act of opening the door B.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and the best system, mode, or manner I am at present acquainted with for carrying the same into practical eifect, I desire to observe in conclusion that what I consider to be novel and original, and therefore claim as the invention to be secured to me by Letters Patent, is as follows;
1. The device for opening and closing a single sliding door or gate, said device consisting of a pivoted bar operating upon a pivot carried in or upon the door or gate, said pivoted lever being connected by a movable link to a spring rigidly attached to a fixed support, all operating together substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination consisting of a single sliding door or gate, a pivot carried in or upon a vertical edge of said gate, a bar, mounted movably upon said pivot, a link connected movably at one end to said bar, the opposite end of said link being connected pivotally to a stiff spring, the stiff spring rigidly attached to a fixed support all operating substantially as hereinbefore described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
