' My invention relates to improvements in nail-pullers; and the -main object of my improvements is etlicien'cy and convenience in operation.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my nail-puller. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation or edge view of the same, the driving-handle being sectioned on the line verse. section of the driving-handle. Fig. 4 isa side elevation of the lower part of the lever removed. Fig. 5 is a like view of the A designates the lever, having a straightsided portion 5 toward its upper end for the driving-handle B to slide upon. The said driving-handle is of cast-iron cored out to form a central longitudinal opening 6 of a rectangular form in cross-section,which opening serves as ways or guides for the straightsided portion 5 of thevlever A, upon which the said driving-handle is fitted to slide. This of its length is intersected by across-opening 7, that terminates on each side at the lower end in stop-shoulders 8. rIhe lower end 9 of the driving-handle is rounded otl1 both outsideand-inside, so that there are no corners at its mouth where the straight-sided portion 5 of the lever A enters the said handle. The upper halfof thisboss 16 forms one side of-a curved recess for the pivoted jaw 17 the other side of the saidrecess being formed by the curved wall 18 in the metal 0E the lever A, the said wall, like the edge of the boss 16, being formed concentricallyV with the said hole 13 for the fulcrum pin or screw. The third side or' end of the jaw-recess in the lever A is formed by the wall or abutment 19 in the metal of the lever A. The pivoted jaw 17 is a -fiat piece of metal of about the same thickness as the lever A-and the xed ja'w 12 and is formed with its upper end and inner edge to tthe boss and curved recess of the lever, as shown in Fig. 4. It is also provided with a pin or screw hole 20, Fig. 4, whereby it may be connected with the j aw-operatin g lever 15 by the employment of a pin or screw 22, Fig. 1, inserted through holes in the said'jaw-operating lever and the hole 2() of Fig. 4. The jaw-operating lever 15 has a foot Q1 of any ordinary construction, while its other end or main portion is merely slotted longitudinally of a width to receive the leverv A'and pivoted jaw 17. While the pivoted ljaw 17 is connected with the operating-lever 15 by means of a single screw, rivet, or pin, it is so guided by the Acurved boss to which the jaw is fitted that it moves with the operating-lever 15 practically the same as if it was secured thereto by two or more rivets or formed in one piece therewith. When the jaws are fully open, as shown'v in Figs. 1 and 4, the upper end of the pivoted jaw its snugly and bears against the walls ofthe curved recess and abutment in the lever A, so that when the jaws are driven into the wood by driving on the said lever no strain whatever is thrown on the pivot-pin of the operatinglever nor on the pin that connects the said lever with the pivoted jaw. The said edges of IOO the pivoted jaw bearing on the boss 16 and wall 18 of the curved recess cause some friction, so that the said jaw does not move so easily as it would if the pivot was its only bearing; but the said friction instead of being detrimental is believed to be beneiicial in that it tends to lessen the pressure of the jaws on the nail and prevents crushing thehead. Instead oi' making the confronting faces of the jaws hooked, as in some nail-pullers, they are so made that when fully opened, as shown, the said Jfaces are nearly parallel to each other, whereby they stand more nearly in longitudinal alinement with the driving-handle to facilitate their entry into the wood.
All of the parts are constructed with especial reference to protecting the hands of the operator by rounded corners and by the absence of any two parts that can possibly come together in such a way as to catch and pinch the skin of the operators hands.
In the modiiication shown in Fig. 5 the general construction is the same excepting that the curved wall 18 of Fig. Z1for the outer edge of the pivoted .jaw to bear against is omitted.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a nail-puller, the combination of the lever having the ixed jaw, pivot-bearing, semiboss concentric with the said bearing and an abutment for the end of the pivoted jaw, with the jaw-operating level` pivoted on the said lever at the said lever-bearing and the pivoted jaw fitted to the said boss and abutment and connected to the said jaw-operating lever for moving therewith.
2. In a nail-puller, the combination of the lever having the fixed -iaw,pivot-bearing, semiboss concentric with the Said bearing and a curved recess formed in part by the said boss and in part by the curved wall 18 concentric therewith, and having an abutment at its upper end, with the pivoted jaw 17 litted to the said boss and recess and substantially ot' the same thickness as the said lever at the said boss, and a jawloperating lever slotted to receive the said two jaws and adjacent part oi the first-named lever, the said jaw-operating lever being pivoted at the said pivot-bearing and connected with the said pivoted jaw.
