ATTACHMENT FOR CASH-REGISTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 760,705, dated May 24, 1904.
Application filed March 21, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AOOB SCHI'NNELLER, a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Cash-Registers; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof.
My invention relates to registering mechanism, and more especially to attachments for cash-registers.
The object of my invention is to provide means which will make it advantageous to the purchaser or the person making the payment to see that the register is properly operated, thus insuring the registration of all payments made to the person having the register ,in charge.
In my Patents No. 659,421, dated October 9, 1900, and No. 713,159, dated November 11, 1902, I have described and .claimed different forms of registering mechanism provided with a special indicator connected to the operative parts of the register and arranged to be displayed at irregular intervals, said indicator being in the'form of a plate having thereon some suitable designation which when displayed indicates that the person whose payment is being registered is entitled to a rebate or some other advantage, thus making the person who pays the money an interested party in seeing that the register is properly operated.
The present invention relates to the same subject-matter as my patents above referred to, and has for its-purpose the same general object, but accomplishes this result in a different Way.
The special object of the present invention is to provide mechanism whereby instead of displaying an indicator, as in my patents aforesaid, a coin, check, or other token is delivered to the person whose payment is being registered. The token-delivering mechanism preferably will be separate from the register and formed as an attachment therefor, but will be so located with reference thereto that its controlling means will be actuated whenever the main register is operated.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is $erial No. 148,865. (Nomads moved, showing the controlling mechanism for the token-delivering mechanism in end View. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the controlling mechanism removed and showing the delivery mechanism in end view. Fig. 5 is aside view of the controlling mechanism and a portion of the delivery mechanism. Fig. 6 is a plan view showing the means for operating the token-delivery mechanism; and Fig. 7 is a front elevation, with the casing removed, of a portion of a cash-register with my invention applied.
In the drawings I have illustrated my invention as an attachment for a cash-register; but my invention is not limited to this use, but may be used with registers of all kinds, and it need not necessarily be an attachment separate from the register itself. Hence no limitations of specific structure or use are to be imposed upon the claims by either the drawings or description, the particular register shown having been selected for purposes of illustration merely.
- In the drawings, 1 represents the top of a well-known type of cash-register, and 2 the front and. rear side walls thereof. type ofcash-register the registrations are made by a series of disks 8, which are operated by key-levers 3, pivoted on an axis et in the base of the register. Lying above all of said levers is a U-shaped frame 5, which is used for ringing the bell and releasing the cash-drawer. When my invention is applied to this cash-register, I make use of this U- shaped frame 5 as a convenient means for actuating the tokendelivery mechanism, and accordingly attach to said frame an arm or bracket 6, to which is connected the lower end of an operating-rod 7, leading to the controlling mechanism of the token-delivery mechanism. This, however, has been selected for purposes of illustration merely, as obviously any other type of register than that shown and operated in any other way can be equally as well adapted to my invention, it
In this only being necessary to connect the rod 7 in any convenient way, so that it will be moved whenever the register itself is operated.
The token-delivery mechanism comprises a suitable casing 10, having therein one or more receptacles 11 for coins or other suitable tokens. 1n the specific embodiment illustrated three such receptacles are shown, each containing a series of coins 12. The object of having three receptacles is to provide a suflicient supply of tokens to last an entire day even in a busy establishment and still not have the easing too high nor the column of coins in the receptacle of such weight as to seriously interfere with their delivery from the receptacles.
The delivering means shown in the drawings comprises a rotary drum or cylinder 13, mounted in the casing 10 on an axis 14 and provided with a series of spring-fingers 15 for each receptacle 11. In Fig. 3 these springlingers are shown in side view, there being nine thereof, thus making three fingers for each receptacle, and said fingers are so arranged that a coin will be delivered from the several receptacles in succession. For instance, the fingers 15 are underneath the first receptacle, the fingers 15 under the second receptacle, and the fingers 15 under the third receptacle, and as the fingers of no two sets are in line a coin can be delivered from only one receptacle at a time. These fingers are flat strips of metal suitably secured at one end to the inside of the drum 13 and having right-angle portions 16 at their opposite ends, which project through slots 17 in the drum and are adapted in the movement of the drum to pass through a groove 18 in the lower end of the receptacles 11, thus carrying with them the lowermost token in said receptacles. The tokens will be carried around in the manner indicated in Fig. 3 and delivered through a slot 18 in the casing 10 and into a suitable receptacle 19.
Suitable controlling means will be provided between the actuating-rod 7 and the delivery mechanism 13, so that the latter will be moved only at intervals with reference to the operation of the register, and preferably this controlling mechanism will be such that the delivery mechanism will be operated at irregular intervals, so that it can never be told when a token is to be delivered, thus making it impossible for the person having the registerin charge to manipulate the token-delivery mechanism in the interest of his or her friends.
The controlling means shown comprises a series of disks 20, four such disks being shown, although a greater or a lesser number might be employed, if desired. Each of said disks is provided on its periphery with a series of teeth 21, those of no two disks being spaced uniform distances apart. Each disk is provided with one or more deep notches 22. These disks are mounted on a suitable axis 23, which, as shown, is a continuation of the axis 1 1 of the drum 13, and said disks are separated by stationary plates 24:, secured at their lower edges on a stud 25, said plates serving to prevent any one of the disks 20 from being rotated by frictional contact with another of said disks. A suitable spring-plate 26 is used for holding the parts in place in the manner described in my former patents.
The disks 20 are adapted to be rotated forwardly at each operation of the register, and for this purpose 1 preferably employ a pawl 27, having an operative end of suflicient width to engage all of said disks. This pawl is mounted on the outer end of an arm 29, fulcrumed on the axis 23 and having connected thereto the actuating-rod 7, before referred to, so that on each operation of the register this pawl will move all of the disks forward a distance corresponding to the distance between adjacent teeth on said disks, and as these spaces vary it follows that the disks will be rotated through different distances at each operation of the register. This irregular stepby-step forward movement continues for each operation of the register until the deep notches 22 of all of the disks come into alinement, when said pawl drops down into the same and is then in position to engage one of the teeth 30 on the disk 31, secured to the drum 13. Whenever this occurs, the pawl will in its forward movement not only rotate the disks 20, but will also rotate the disk 31 and drum 13 and deliver a token. A suitable pawl or detent 32, preferably mounted on the stud 25, prevents backward rotation of the parts. One end 33 of the casing is removable, and in order that it cannot be tampered with is provided with a stud 34, which projects into the hollow shaft 1 1 and is provided with an annular groove which is engaged by the end of a screw 35.
The operation of the mechanism above described is as follows: lVhenever the register is operated to register a payment, the frame 5 is elevated, thus moving the actuating-rod 7. This, through the pawl 27, imparts a slight forward rotation to the disks 20, the extent of rotation of the several disks depending upon the distance between the adjacent teeth on said disks. This operation continues for each operation of the register until the deep notches 22 of all of said disks come into alinement, when the pawl drops into said notches and on its forward movement moves the drum 13 and delivers a token. Inasmuch as the teeth 21 on the disks 20 are spaced different distances apart it never can be told just when the deep notches in all of said disks will aline, and consequently the person having the register in charge will not be able to manipulate the same in the interests of his or her friends.
obviously this is not necessary, as it might be incorporated in' the register itself, andI do not wish the claims to be limited to token-deliverymechanism independent of the register itself. Neither do I wish to be limited to mechanism for delivering a coin, as obviously a check of any kind, whether metallic, paper, orof any material, will answer equally aswell as the coin.
By the term 'token I wish to include any portable thing which when delivered to the 'person making'the payment will either be of intrinsic value or capable of being exchanged for something of value.
WV hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In registering mechanism, the combination with a register, ofactuating means therefor, token-delivery mechanism, and means intermediate the register and token-delivery mechanism for operating the latter at inter' vals only with relation to the operation of the register.
2. In registering mechanism, the combination with a register, of actuating means therefor, token-delivery mechanism, and controlling means operated from the register and arranged to permit the operation of the tokendelivery means at intervals.
3. In registering mechanism, the combination with a register, of actuating means therefor, token-delivery mechanism, and controlling means operated from the register-actuating means and arranged to permit the operation of the token-delivery mechanism at irregular intervals.
4. In registering mechanism, the combination with the register, of an attachment therefor com prising token-delivery mechanism,and means for operating the token-delivery mechanism at intervals with reference to the operation of the register.
5. In registering mechanism, the combination with a register, of an attachment therefor comprising token delivery mechanism, controlling means therefor arranged to permit the operation of the same at intervals, and means arranged to operate the controlling means whenever the register is operated.
6. In registering mechanism, the combination with register-operating means, of tokendelivery mechanism, controlling means therefor arranged to permit the operation of the token-delivery mechanism at irregular intervals, and means arranged to operate the controlling means whenever the register is operated.
7 In registering mechanism, the combination with register-operating means, of tokendelivery mechanism, controlling means therefor, arranged to operate the same at intervals, a rocking frame for actuating said controlling means, and connections between said rocking frame and the register-operating means.
8. In registeringmechanism, the combination with register-operating means, of tokendelivery mechanism, a plurality of movable bodies provided with one or more notches or openings, means controlled from said notches oropenings whenthey are in a certain relation to one another for operating said tokendelivery mechanism, and means operated whenever said register is operated for moving said movable bodies through different distances;
9. In registering mechanism, the combination of register-operating means, of tokendelivery mechanism, a plurality of disks having differently-spaced teeth and each having one ormore deep notches, a pawl bearing on said disks and adapted to rotate the same, connections between said pawl and the registeroperating means, and means arranged to be engaged by said pawl when it drops into the deep notches of said disks for actuating said token-delivery mechanism.
10. In registering mechanism, the combination with register-operating means, of rotary token delivery mechanism, a plurality of toothed disks each having one or more deep notches, a pawl bearing on said disks and adapted to rotate the same, connections between said pawl and the register-operating means, and means on said token delivery mechanism arranged to be engaged by said pawl when it drops into the deep notches of said disks.
11. An attachment for registers comprising a receptacle for containing tokens, delivery means therefor, controlling means for said delivery means arranged to operate the same at intervals, and connections whereby said controlling means is actuated whenever the register is operated.
12. Token-delivery mechanism for registers comprising a receptacle for containing tokens, rotary delivery means therefor, a series of toothed disks each provided with one or more deep notches, means controlled by said deep notches when they aline for operating said delivery means, and connections whereby said disks are given a stepwise rotary movement whenever the register is actuated.
13. Token-delivery mechanism for registers,'comprising a receptacle for containing tokens, a rotary delivery-drum provided with a series of fingers for engaging said tokens and delivering the same from said receptacle, controlling means for said delivery-drum, the connections whereby said controlling means is actuated whenever the register is actuated.
14:. Token-delivery mechanism for registers, comprising a plurality of receptacles for containing tokens, a delivery-drum provided with a series of fingers or projections out of line with each other for delivering the tokens from said receptacles, controlling means for said delivery-drum, and connections whereby said controlling means is actuated whenever the register is actuated.
15. In a cash-register, the combination with the registering mechanism, of keys for actuating the same, token-delivery mechanism, and mechanism actuated from any one of a plurality of the keys for operating said tokendelivery mechanism at irregular intervals bodies provided with one or more notches or openings, means controlled from said notches or openings when they are in certain relation to each other for operating the token-delivery mechanism, and means actuated by any one of a plurality of keys for moving said bodies different distances.
18. In a cash-register, the combination with the registering mechanism, of keys for actuating the same, rotary token-delivery mechanism, a plurality of toothed disks each having one or more deep notches, a pawl for rotatingsaid disks, means for rotating the tokendelivery mechanism, said means lying in the path of movement of the pawl when it drops into the notches in the disks, abar lyingin the path of movement of a plurality of the keys, and connections between said bar and the pawl.
