IMPROVBD MODE OI LAGING BOOTS AND SHOESs T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that we, WILLIAM BANISTER and ALBERT Il. RoWELr., of Lawrence, in the county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have'invented new and useful Improvements inthe Mode of Laeing Bootsvand Shoes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable othersskille'd in the art to make and use the same, reference being had Le the aecompanying'druwings, forming part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to enable the lace or string to he pulled tight throughoutits length hy one motion, and also an improved method of securingthe lace. Inthe accompanying drawing- A is the boot; B, our improved clasp or fastener; e c c, loopsor eyelets, through which the lace or leather is threaded, as shown, and then pulled tight by a single pull upon the free portion of the lace. The loops or eyelets are of brass'or other suitable material, and are set back from the binding, on each side, at equal dis= tonces along the opening of the boot. Theloops or eyelets are secured by the buttons el, passing through the shank of the loop, and fastening theznto the leather.
The clasp or fastener B, made of any suitable material, consists of a common clasp, having a triangular lip, Z, attached to its lower portion, turned upwards over the clasp. Opposite this lip, on the upper s ide ofthe clasp, is atongue or projection, o', and on each side of the tongue b is a triangular lip, Zi", attached to the upper portion oithe clasp B, and turned downwards over it. v
To llace and fasten the boot, having passed the laces through the loops @,as shown in the drawing, and thence under the clasp B, fasten the latter, pullupon the free portion of the laces, and then pass one end of the lace tightly around one of the lips, Z1, when it will be jammed and heldast between the lip and the body of the clasp, and, leaving as much as may .be desired free, pass thel end `under the lip b, leaving the tag to fall over; then pass the other ends of' the lace under the other lip, o, jamming as before, andleaving as much as muy be desired free, pass the end under thelip b, leaving the'tag tofall over on the side of b, opposite to the other tag. i A
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I. The clasp for securing the lacings of boots and shoes, consisting of the plate B, havigthe turned-up lip attached to its lower portion, the tongue b', upon its upper edge, and the downward-projecting lips 6'upon each side et" said tongue, as herein shown and described.
2. I also claim a loop, lying Hat upon the surface of theleathenand attached to a stud, or its equivalent,
saidloop'heing allowed to swing with-the motion ofthe shoe-string, substantially as herein shown and described'. Y
