SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 760,368, dated May 17, 1904.
Application filed October 21 1903- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN ROBERT ARM- STRONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bessemer, in the county of J efierson and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in jacks for light carriages, wagons, and other similar vehicles; and its object is to provide a jack of simple, durable, and inexpensive construction, which is formed of few parts and which can be readily operated to hoist and support a vehicle.
The invention consists in providing a standard in which is pivoted a lever having a toothed bar pivotally connected thereto and slidably mounted within the standard. The teeth upon this bar are held normally in engagement with a locking-pin by means of a spring, which is connected to the standard and bar, respectively. Means are provided whereby the toothed bar can be readily disengaged from the locking-pin.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the jack, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a base from which extends parallel standards 2, connected at their upper ends by a pivot-pin 3, on which is fulcrumed a lever 4, having a recess 5 in its upper face for the reception of axles of vehicles to be raised. Pivoted to one end of this lever are angle-irons 6, which are arranged at opposite sides of the lever and are connected to a toothed bar 7, the teethS of which are adapted. to engage a locking-pin 9, which connects the standards 2. A connecting-bolt 10 is secured within the standards at a point between the pins 3 and 9 and has a roller 11 journaled there- Serial No. 177,930. (No model.)
on. A spring 12 is connected at opposite ends to the lower end of the beam 7 and to the base 1, respectively, and a cord .13 or other flexible strip is fastened at opposite ends to the bar 7 and the lever.
In using the device the cord 13 is drawn backward, so as to expand the spring 12 and move bar 7 out of engagement with pin 9. The lever A can then be adjusted to any desired angle, and as soon as it assumes its proper position the cord 13 is released and the spring 12 will promptly throw the bar 7 upon pin 9 and bring one of its teeth into engagement with said pin. The roller 11 is provided so as to prevent undue wear upon the bar 7 when the same is moved. backward and forward in raised position between the standards.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall Within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In a device of the character described, the combination with a base having standards thereon, and a roller journaled between the standards; of a lever fulcrumed between the standards and above the roller, a toothed bar pivoted to the lever and slidably mounted between the standards, a locking-pin connecting the standards and normally supporting and engaged by the bar, a spring secured at opposite ends of the bar and base, respectively, and a flexible connection between the bar and the lever.
