My invention relates to improvements in friction-clutch mechanism adapted for use in all the varied relations where it is desired to transmit power or motion from a contin uouslyoperating wheel or shaft to a machine or instrumentality whose function requires that it be started or stopped at intervals or that it may have an intermittent movement.
My object is to provide a device of this class which shall be simple in construction, economical in cost, reliable, durable, and thoroughly efficient in use; and to these ends the invention consists of the features, arrangements, and combinations hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows an operating or power wheel and a winding-drum with my improved mechanism applied or shown in operative relation. This view is obtained by looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2 2, Fig. 1, viewed in the direction of the arrow, parts being in elevation. Fig. 3 is a section taken through the shaft, showing the operating-wheel and the clutch mechanism, the drum being removed and the parts viewed in the direction opposite the arrow in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 1 4, Fig. 1, looking downwardly. Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5 5, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a section taken on the line 6 6, Fig. 3, the parts being shown on a larger scale. the line 7, Fig. 3.

Interposed between the hub of the wheel and the hub of the drum is a hub 9, jour naled on the shaft and provided with a'radial arm 10,whose outer extremity is equipped with i a stud 12, which projects toward the drum and occupies a position beyond the flange 7 of the drum, but in the plane of the flange. To the stud 12 is attachedone extremity of a thin metal band 13, which occupies an annular positionwith reference to the flange 7, its oppo site extremity being attached to a spoke of the wheel 8 by passing the band around asleeve 15, mounted on a stud 14:,n1ade fast to the wheel-spoke. As shown in thedrawings,"- the band 13 is provided with a lining of wood or other suitable material offering a good fric= tion face or surface to the flange 7 of the drum and adapted to be: replaced at small cost when worn. This lining is composed of sections or short blocks 16, securedtothe band by screws 17 or other suitable fastening devices. As shown in Fig. 6, the inner extremityof the screw 17 enters a recess 18 formed in the block and is held in place by a nut 19, which is countersunk in the said recess. To overcome any tendency of the friction-band to slip off the flange 7 'of the drum, the spokes of the wheel 8 are provided with arms 20, which pass through slots 21 formed in the outer extremi ties of the spokes. link and one extremity of a rod 30, which passes between the link members 23 and is of the same thickness as the washer 26. The toggle member 27 beyond its bifurcated portion consists of a threaded stem 27, which passes through a block 28, trunnioned on the arm 10, the latter being provided with a bracket 10, in which the block is located. This block is provided with trunnions 28, one of which engages the body'of the arm, while the other engages a bearing-plate 10, inserted in an opening formed in the bracket, the latter being held in place by a screw 10. This bearing-plate is readily removable and replaceable topermit the insertion and removal of the trunnion-block. The threaded stem 27 of the toggle member 27 is connected with the block 28 by nuts 29, one on each side. The parts 23 and 27 form a joint composed of two toggle members. The upper or outer extremity of the rod 30 is connected with this joint, and the rod extends downwardly or inwardly therefrom, its lower or inner extremity being connected with an arm 31 of a bellcrank lever 31, journaled at 32 between two lugs 33, formed integral with the Wheel 8 near its hub. The other arm of the bell-crank lever, or that designated 31, is pivotally connected with one extremity of a pin 34, whose opposite extremity is made fast to a lug 35, formed integral with a sleeve 36, slidably mounted on the hub 8of the wheel 8. This sleeve is provided with a circumferential groove 36?, adapted to receive a lever, (not shown,) whereby the sleeve maybe shifted for tightening or releasing the friction-band on the flange of the drum, as hereinafter explained.
When the friction-band is released and the wheel 8 is running independently of the. drum, the parts are in the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3. Then if it is desired to start the drum the sleeve 36 is shifted in the direction indicated by arrow (0 in Fig. 2, whereby the pin 34 is actuated to move thebellcrank lever in a direction to push-outwardly on the rod 30, whereby the toggle members 23 and 27 are moved to the position shown by full lines in Fig. 1, forcing the arm 10 in the direction indicated by the arrows in Figs. 1 and 3, this movement of the arm being sufficient to tighten the friction-band on the flange 7 of the drum, causing the latter to rotate with In Fig. 1 the three pivotal points of the toggle are shown in a straight line, whereby the arm 10 is given amaximum move ment; but in order to lock the toggle in the position to cause the drum to rotate with the wheel 8 the toggle members are pushed slightly beyond this position or to the position shown by full lines in Fig. 3. This action does not perceptibly release the hold of the frictionband.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination with an operatingwheel and a device to be actuated therefrom, of friction-clutch mechanism comprising an arm having independent turning movement on the axis of the wheel, a friction-band connected with one extremity of the arm, the opposite extremity of the band being connected with the operating-wheel, a togglejoint connection between the wheel and arm for tightening the band which is suitably arranged to engage the part ofthe device to be actuated, and a block trunnioned on the arm, one member of the toggle passing through said block and being adjustable to compensate for the wear of the parts incident to the operation of the toggle.
2. The combination with an operatingwheel, of means for transmitting motion therefrom comprising a friction-band, an arm connected toturn independently of the operating-wheel, one end of the band being connected with the arm and the other with the wheel, a toggle-joint having one member connected with the wheel, a block trunnioned on the arm With which block the other member of the toggle is connected, and means for actuating the toggle.
3. The combination with an operatingwheel, and a flanged device, of a friction-band located in the .plane of the flange of the said device, an arm mounted to turn with the operating-wheel but capable of independent turning movement on the wheel-axis, one end of the friction-band being connected with the said arm and the other end with the operating-wheel, a toggle-joint having one member connected with the wheel, ablock trunnioned on the arm with which block the other member of the toggle is connected, and means for actuating the toggle.
4. The combination With an operatingwheel andawheel to be operated, of means for transmitting motion from one wheel to the other, comprising a friction-band, one end of which is connectedwith the operating-wheel, an arm with which the other extremity of the band is connected, the arm being adapted to turn on thewheel-axis as a center, a togglejoint having one member connected with the wheel, a block trunnioned on the arm, with which block the other member of the toggle is connected, and means for actuating the toggle.
5. The combination with a shaft, an operating-wheel mounted thereon, a wheel to be operated also mounted on the shaft, one of the said wheels being loose on the shaft, of a friction-band, one extremity of which is connected with the operating-wheel, an arm having a hub loose on the shaft, the other extremity of the band being connected with said arm, and means mounted on the operatingwheel and connected with the arm for actuating the latter to control the tension of the band on the wheel to be operated, said meansincluding a toggle-joint having one member connected with the wheel, and a block trunnioned on the arm with which the other toggle member is connected.
6. The combination with an operatingwheel and a wheel to be operated, of a radial arm relatively movable on the axis of the operating-wheel, a friction-band arranged to engage the wheel to be operated, one extremity of said band being connected with the arm and the other end with the operating-wheel, a toggle-joint composed of two members one of which is connected with the operatingwheel, a block trunnioned on the arm with which block the other toggle member is adjustably connected, and means for actuating the toggle-joint to control the tension of the friction-band.
7. The combination with an operatingwheel, and a wheel to be operated, of an arm relatively movable on the axis of the wheels, a friction-band arranged to engage the wheel to be operated, the said band being connected with the operating-wheel, and with the arm, a toggle-joint connection between the arm and the operating-wheel, a block trunnioned on the arm with which one member of the toggle adjustably connected, a rod connected with the toggle-joint and means for actuating the toggle-joint to control the tension of the friction-band, comprising a shiftable collar and a bell-crank lever interposed between the rod and the collar and connected with the said parts in operative relation.
8. The combination with an operatingwheel and a wheel to be operated, of an arm relatively movable on the axis of the wheel, a friction-band connected with the operatingwheel and with the arm and arranged to engage the wheel to be operated, and means for controlling the tension of the band, comprising a toggle-joint connecting the operatingwheel and the said arm, the arm beingprovided with a bracket, ablock trunnioned in the bracket, one member of the toggle-joint being adiustably connected with said block, a rod-lever connected with the said. joint, a shiitable collar mounted on the wheel-axis, and a connection between said collar and the rod whereby the shifting of the collar actuates the toggle-joint through the instrumentality of the rod.
9. The combination with an operatingwheel, of a relatively movable arm, a frictionband connected with the wheel and arm, a toggle-joint connection between the wheel and arm, the arm having a bracket provided with a removable plate, a block trunnioned in the bracket, one trunnion engaging the said plate, and one member of the toggle being adjustably connected with the block, a rod connected with said joint, a collar mounted on the axis of the wheel and movable lengthwise of the axis, and a belberank lever fulcrumed on the wheel, one arm being connected with the rod, and the other arm being connected with the shiftable collar.
10. The combination with an operatingwheel and a winding-drum having an annular flange, of an arm mounted on a hub interposed between the hubs of the wheel and drum, a friction-band connecting the wheel and arm and arranged when properly actuated to engage the flange of the drum in operative relation for the purpose of propelling the drum, a toggle-joint connection between the wheel, and the arm a block trunnioned on the arm with which one member of the togglejoint is adjustably connected, and means "for actuating the said joint to control the tension of the friction-band with reference to the flange of the drum, comprising a rod connected with the toggle, a bell-crank lever with which the rod is connected, and a shiftable collar connected with the said lever and mounted on the axis of the wheel.
11. The combination with an operatingwheel, of an arm relatively movable on the wheelaxis, a friction-band connecting the wheel and arm, and a toggle-joint one member of which is connected with the wheel, and a block trunnioned on the arm with which the other member is adjustablyconnected.
12. The combination with an operatingwheel and a winding-d rum, of an arm, a toggle-joint connection between the arm and the wheel, a block trunnioned on the arm, one
member of the toggle passing through said wear of the parts incident to the operation oi the toggle, and means mounted on the operating-wheel for actuating the toggle.
13. The combination with an operatingwheel and an adjacent wheel to be operated, the latter being provided with a flange, ot' a friction-band connected at one extremity with the operating-wheel, and extending around the flange, a relatively movable arm with which the opposite extremity of the arm is connected, a toggle-joint connection between the arm and wheel, a block trunnioned on the arm with which block one member of the toggle is adjustably connected, means for actuating the toggle to control the tension of the band, comprising a rod connected with the toggle, a bell-crank lever connected with one extremity of the rod, a shiftable collar also connected with the lever, and means mounted on the operating-wheel to prevent the band from slipping ofl the flange of the wheel to be operated' 14:.
