Be it known that I, HUGH DYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Neck City, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hoisting Apparatuses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hoisting apparatus, and has for its object to provide a new and improved hoisting device, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a plan view of a hoisting device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. l.

Referring now to the drawings, the hoistingdrum A is loosely mounted on ashaft B, supported in or upon a suitable frame. The shaft B is operatively connected to a drivingshaft C in any desired manner, as by means of the gears B C. This driving-shaft is connected in any desired manner with a source of power. This shaft may be driven by horsepower, belts, engines, motors, or the like. The drum A is provided at each end with the engaging faces A', which lare preferably inclined, as shown, and is mounted between the gear-wheel B and Athe disk A2. This disk and the gear-wheel B are each provided with an engaging part A3, which is preferably coneshaped and which engages the engaging faces A on the drum. These. engaging parts A3 may be of wood or suitable metal or other material, and when they engage the drum A said drum is held between them, so as to rotate with the shaft B. The disk A2 is preferably keyed or feathered to the shaft B, so as to rotate therewith, but have a longitudinal movement, and suitable springs A4 within the drum normally tend to separate the gear B and the disk A2, so as to release the drum A.
In proximity to the diskA2 is a sleeve D, loosely mounted on the shaft B and provided with a holding device which prevents its turning with the shaft. As herein illustrated, this object is attained by providing the sleeve with a projection D', which engages a holding-piece D2, attached to the frame. The

In proximity to this sleeve is another sleeve E, loosely mounted ou the shaft and iixed against rotation by connection with the frame, said sleeve being provided with a right-hand screw-thread. A controlling part or nut F surrounds the shaft B and engages the screw-threads on the sleeves D and E. This controlling part or nut is so arranged that whenrotated in one direction it moves the two sleeves apart and when rotated in the opposite direction it moves the two sleeves toward each other. This nutis provided with a projection F, which forms the controllinglever. As herein shown, the projection F has attached to it a lever or piece F2, by means of which its position can be readily controlled. The controlling part or nut F is also provided with an eccentric F3, which is preferably integral therewith. The strap F4 of this eccentric is connected to an arm F5 on a sleeve G, loosely mounted on the shaft C. This sleeve G is free to move longitudinally and is provided with the cranks or arms Gr', to which are connected the brake-straps G2, which extend around the drum A, said drum being preferably provided with grooves Gr3 for said straps. These brake-straps G2 may be lined with wood or other suitable friction material, and the grooves on the drum may also be lined with such material.
It will be noted that each arm G has parts which project on opposite sides of the shaft, and thatlone end of each brake-strap Gr2 is connected to the arm on one side of the shaft and the other end is connected to said arm It will be seen that by means of this construction the brake-straps may be tightened and loosened by rocking the sleeve Gr through the agency of the arm or lever F5. If, for example, said sleeve is rocked in one direction, the straps are loosened, and if rocked in the other direction the straps are tightened, so as to act as brakes. The drum A is also preferably provided with a separate brake, which, as herein shown, consists of the brake-strap H, adapted to engage the projecting annulus H' on the drum, said strap being connected to This brake-strap H may be lined with wood or other friction material. It will be noted that I have here ahosting device which is simple in construction and which may be made cheaply and which is reliable and efiicient in its operation, giving the operator perfect control of the parts.
I have described in detail a particular construction embodying my invention; but itis of course evident that the several parts may be varied in many particulars and that some of the parts may be omitted and others used with parts not herein shown Without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not limit myself to the device illustrated.
The use and operation of my invention are as follows: When it is desired to operatively connect the drum A with the shafts B and C, and hence with the source of power, the controlling part or nut F is moved so as to separate the sleeves D and E. This result is obtained by moving the controlling-lever F2 toward the shaft C-that is, toward the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. This movement of the controlling part or nut F forces the disk A2 toward the drum and the drum A toward the gear-wheel B', the drum being clamped between said disk and gearwheel by means of the cones and inclined faces. Since the disk and gear-wheel are operatively connected to the shaft B, it will be seen that said drum will also be operatively connected with said shaft and will be rotated to wind the rope thereon. The movement of the controlling part or nut F toward the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. l causes the sleeve G to be moved or rocked so as to loosen the brake-straps G2, this movement being due to the eccentric F3 and the connecting part F4. If now it is desired to hold the drum in any given position, the controlling part F is moved, by means of the controlling-lever, to the position shown in full linesin Fig. l. This movement separates the sleeves D and E, and the spring A4 moves the disk A2 and drum A to the left, so as to This movement of the controlling part also moves or rocks the sleeve G, so as to tighten the brake-straps G2 and apply the brake to the drum. It will be noted that the brake-straps G2 are not attached to a fixed point on the frame, but are connected with the sleeve' G, which is free to move longitudinally, and hence the parts readily adjust themselves to the movement of the drum. There is therefore no danger of breaking the straps or injuring the parts when the brake is suddenly applied. In order to insure the drum remaining stationary while the controllinglever is being thrown past the central point, I prefer to provide an auxiliary brake. This auxiliary brake is operated by placing the foot on the lever H, thus tightening the brakestrap H, so as to bring it into contact with theprojectionorannulusHonthedrum. As
soon as the controlling-lever has passed the central point this auxiliary brake may be released. It is of course evident that the auxiliary brake might be omitted and the desired results obtained by throwing the lever F2 very quickly from one position to the other. If now it is desired to lower the bucket, cage, or other device connected with the rope on the drum, the controlling-lever F2 is moved so as to rock the sleeve G and release the brakestraps G2. The weight of the bucket or other device is then free to act to rotate the drum A. It will be seen that this rotation may be controlled, so as to lower at any desired speed, by varying the position of the controlling-lever F2, thus varying the force with which the brake is applied to the drum.
In the construction herein illustrated the controlling lever stays in any position in which it is placed without any holding device, such as ratchets or the'like, and the danger and inconvenience of such holding devices are obviated. It will also be seen that by this construction the drum is started, stopped, or reversed without stopping or in any manner controlling the driving-shaft, and that these several operations are all performed by a single controlling-lever. It will further be noted that the controlling parts are all in line with the drum and mounted upon the same shaft.
It will be noted that one of the springs A4 engages a part on the drum and the gear B', while the other spring engages a part on the drum and the disk A2. Itwill thus be seen that when the controlling` part is operated to move the sleeves D and E toward each other the springs are free to act, and they move the drum A longitudinally, so that it becomes disengaged from the part A3, and they also move the disk Aflongitudinally, so that it becomes disengaged from the drum.
I claiml. A hoisting device, comprising a shaft, a drum loosely mounted thereon, connecting mechanism for operatively connecting the drum with the shaft, a controlling device for said connecting mechanism, comprising a sleeve mounted on said shaft and provided with a screw-thread, a nut surrounding the shaft and engaging said screw-thread, so that when the nut is rotated the sleeve is moved along the shaft, an eccentric on said nut, provided with an eccentric-strap, and a braking device for said drum, said braking device connected with said eccentric-strap so as to be moved thereby.
2. Av hoisting device, comprising a shaft, a drum loosely mounted thereon, a brake-strap therefor, said brake-strap connected to a longitudinally-movable part free to move so as to adjust itself to the position of the drum.

rounding said shaft and engaging the screwthreaded ends of said sleeves, so that When the nut is rotated in one direction the sleeves will be separated and when rotated in the other direction the sleeves Will be moved toward each other.

The combination with a shaft of tWo sleeves loosely mounted on said shaftand provided With means for holding them against rotation, said sleeves also provided with oppositely-inclined screw-threads, a nut surrounding said shaft and engaging the screwthreaded ends of said sleeves, so that when the nut is rotated in one direction the sleeves will be separated and when rotated in the other direction the sleeves will be moved toward each other, and an eccentric on said nut providedvwith a strap connected with a movable part.
5. A controlling device for hoisting apparatus, comprising a nut having an .eccentric integral therewith and a projecting part also integral therewith, by means of which th position of the nut is controlled.

A hoisting device, comprising a shaft, a drum loosely mounted thereon, a connecting mechanism for connecting the drum with the shaft, 'a controlling device for said connecting mechanism, said controlling device mounted on said shaft, a brake controlled by said controlling device, and an auxiliary brake for said drum independently controlled.

A con trolling device for hoisting apparatus comprising a drum, means for moving the drum longitudinally, a brake for the drum comprising a strap associated with the drum, a shaft carrying a sleeve loosely mounted thereon, said sleeve provided with an arm projecting on opposite sides thereof, one end of said strap connected to said arm on one side of the sleeve and the other end connected to said arm on the other side of said sleeve and means for rocking said sleeve so as to tighten or loosen the strap.

A hoisting device comprising a shaft, a drum loosely mounted thereon, a connecting mechanism for operatively connecting the drum with the shaft, a controlling device for controlling said connecting mechanism comprising a threaded sleeve mounted on the shaft so as to move longitudinally but provided'with means for preventing rotation, a threaded nut surrounding said sleeve and adapted when rotated to move the sleeve lon` gitudinally. y
11. A hoisting device comprising a shaft, a drum loosely mounted thereon, a connecting mechanism for operatively connecting the drum with the shaft, a controlling device for 4 between said brake mechanism and said eccentric whereby the said brake mechanism is operated When the nut is rotated.
