SPATU LA AND CORK-EXTRACTOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,714, dated May 10, 1904.

To all whom it ntay concern:

Be it known that I, EDWIN BRIGGS J ELKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quitman, in the county of Brooks and State of Georgia, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Spatulas and Cork-Extractors, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in spatulas, being in the nature of a combined spatula and cork-extractor; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the improved device in use as a cork-extractor. Fig. 2 is adetail perspective view of the device, part of the spatula-blade being broken away. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device, one side of the handle being removed and parts being in section. Fig. t is a detail perspective view, partly in section, showing the cork-extracting device and the shank of the spatula. Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of the sleeve of the cork-extracting device, and Fig. 6 is a cross-section on about line 6 6 of Fig. 3.

In carrying out my invention I provide a spatula-blade A, having its shank B held by the rivets C or other suitable devices between the sections D and D of the handle, the shank B being provided at its inner end with a tang or extension B, which operates within the slotted rear end of the shank of the cork-extracting device E, as best shown in Fig. 3, and aids in guiding such tang and bracing the cork-extracting device in position. The corkextracting device E includes the point E, adapted to be forced into a cork, as shown in Fig. 1, the body portion E, which is provided at its outer end with the edge lugs a, which fit and are secured in the slots f in the sleeve F, the body portion being slotted longitudinally at e to receive the screw G and the inner end of the body E being provided with a longitudinal slot 0 in which operates the extension or tang B on the inner end of the shank B of the spatulablade. The sleeveF embraces and slides along the butt-end of the handle D and D, fitting over the latter and 5 forming a slide by which the cork-extracting device may be protruded, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 3,

Fig. 3, so the point of the extracting device will be incased between the butt-ends of the sections D and D of the handle. The screw G turns through the section D of the handle and operating within the slot e serves to guide the extracting device and also to limit the movement oi same out and in, as may be desired. The head of the screw G, it will be no ticed, is countersunk in the handle-section D, so it will not form any obstruction to the movement of the sleeve F, the latter sliding over the head of the screw to and from the position shown in full lines, Fig. 2, and that shown in full lines, Fig.

It will be noticed the sleeve F is made suiliciently long to properly guide the cork-extractor and also to afford suliicient surface to be gripped by the hand in using the extractor, as shown in Fig. 1. Ordinarily it is preferred to form the sleeve with the slots f and to secure the lugs e of the extractor Ein said slots by soldering, brazing, or in other suitable manner, as desired.

The screw Gr may be turned to tighten the handle to a greater or less degree, as may be desired.

The invention will be found especially usefulby druggists in filling prescriptions, the spatula being used in the ordinary way and the extractor for removing the corks of the large-mouthed bottles employed in drugstores for holding different drugs employed in prescriptions.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. The improved spatula and cork-extractor herein described, comprising the handle having the opposite sections, the spatula having its shank secured between said sections at one end of the latter, and provided at its inner end with the projecting tang or extension, the extractor having its body portion operating between the opposite end of the handle-sections and provided in its inner end with a slot to receive the tang of the spatula and also having a longitudinal slot for a screw, such screw T00 connecting the sections of the handle and operating in said slot of the extractor, and the sleeve encircling the handle and secured to the cork-extractor and slidable along the handle, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The handle having its sections separated at the butt-end of the handle, the extractor operating between such sections having a longitudinal slot, the sleeve encircling the buttend of the handle and secured in connection with the extractor, and slidable along the handle, and the screw turned through the handle and passing through the slot for limiting the movement of the extractor in the handle, the
