UNITED STATES Patented May 10, 1904.
ISAAC N. DANN, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
GO-CART.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,681, dated. May 10, 1904.
Application filed April 20, 1903.
To all whom it 'nuty concern:
Be it known that I, IsAAo N. DANN, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in (Io-Carts; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a perspective View of a portion of a go-cart embodying my invention and showing the back in its raised position; Fig. 2, a similar view with the back in its inclined 'position.
This invention relates to an improvement in go-carts or baby-carriages, and particularly to those in which the back may be adjusted with relation to the seat, so as to form a reclining-carriage, the object of the invention being to provide a go-cart having an adjustable back with a folding top; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In illustrating my invention I have shown a cart embodying features shown in United States Patent No. 633,481, granted to me September 19, 1899, the cart comprising a body A, adjustable back B, and handles C, between which the back is arranged. The carriage shown also includes a foot rest or support D, which may also be raised or lowered, the details of construction of the carriage being immaterial other than the arrangement of the back with relation to the body. Secured to each side of the back is a brace E, which curves downward and forward, and to this brace the lower edge of the folding top F is attached, the bows Gr, H, and I of the top being pivoted to the forward end of these braces. Between the brace and the forward bow I is a top prop J of usual construction, which when extended holds the top in its open position or when broken down permits the top to be folded. The forward ends of the braces E are pivoted to links K, which at their opposite ends are pivoted to brackets L, secured to the top of the sides M of the body, the links extending rearward from the end of the braces when the back is Serial No. 153.429. (No model.)
in its raised or upright position and when in this position inclines downward from the bracket to the forward ends of the braces. To incline the back, the top is lifted so as to raise the links K and allow them to turn in the brackets L, and when raised above a horizontal line the back may be inclined, the links continuing to turn until they extend rearward from the brackets, as shown in Fig. 2. WVhen the back is in an inclined position, the links incline downward from the brackets and extend forward from the forward ends of the braces E. To return the back to an upright position, the top is again lifted to raise the links K above the line of their pivots, when they will turn thereon and allow the back to be raised.
I am aware that go-carts having reclining backs have been provided with tops secured to said back and movable therewith. I therefore do not wish to be understood as claim ing, broadly, such as my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a go-cart the combination with the body thereof having an adjustable back, of braces secured to said back and projecting forward therefrom on opposite sides, a top secured to said braces and links pivotally connected with the forward ends of said braces and with the sides of the body, substantially as described.
2. In a go-cart, the combination with a body and adjustable back, of braces secured to opposite sides of said back and extending downwardly and forwardly therefrom, a folded top the bows of which are pivoted to the outer ends of said braces, and links also connected with the outer ends of said braces and pivoted to brackets secured to the sides of the body on which they are adapted to turn as the back is raised or lowered, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ISAAC N. DANN.
