Patented Aug. 4, 1896,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS JENSEN, OF EVAN, MINNESOTA.
SLEIGH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,003, dated August 4, 1896.
Application filed November 5, 1895. Serial No. 568,001. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULIUS JENSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evan, in the county of Brown and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleighs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to sleighs.
The object of the invention is to provide a sleigh the body of which will not be disturbed from its normal position by the runners of the sleigh passing over any obstruction in the snow, thus overcoming the objectionable jarring or tilting of the body of the sleigh.
With this object in view the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved sleigh. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, showing in full lines the position assumed by the runners when one of them contacts with an obstruction, and in dotted lines the position assumed by the other runner when it strikes an obstruction. Fig. 8 is a rear view, and Fig. at is a longitudinal vertical sectional view.
In the drawings, 1 denotes a sleigh-body, which may be of any well known or approved construction, and a further description of the same is not deemed necessary.
2 denotes the bolsters, secured to the floor of the sleigh, and 3 denotes the runners. Each of these runners consists of a shoe 4, having near its rear end the knee 5, constructed of angle-iron.
6 denotes a bracket secured to the rear bolster, and 7 denotes a brace-iron secured to the runner near its rear end and projecting upwardly. Pivot-bolts 8 pass through the knee, the ears of the brackets, and the brace, and in this manner pivot the runner to the bolster.
9 denotes a brace, which extends from the knee forwardly to and connects the front curved end of the runner with said knee and braces the parts against strain. Secured to the under side of the front bolster of the sleigh is a guide-plate 10, having flanges 11.
12 denotes an arched bar, the ends of which are pivoted by bolts 13Qto studs 14., secured to the shoe of the runner. To the upper or arched portion of this bar is pivoted a slideblock 15, having flanges 16, adapted to be embraced by the flanges of the guide.
In operation, as the sleigh is drawn along, should one of the runners encounter an obstruction it will rise to pass over the same, and in raising it will lower the opposite runner, thereby preventing the body of the sleigh being canted to that side, as the runner which has just lowered has moved downward a distance corresponding to the upward movement of the runner that has encountered the obstruction. Thus the occupants of the sleigh are relieved of any sudden shock or cantin g of the sleigh sidewise.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is
1. The combination with a sleigh-body, of runners pivoted at the rear end of the body, and an arched bar pivoted to the forward ends of said runners and having a sliding and pivoted engagement with the body of the sleigh, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a sleigh-body, of runners pivoted thereto near their rear ends, an arched bar having its ends pivoted to the forward ends of said runners, a guide-plate secured to the body of the sleigh, and a slide pivoted to the arched bar and having a sliding engagement with the guide-plate, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JULIUS JENSEN.
W'itnesses:
J. H. P. I-IOY, PETER J noonson.
