Description
UNITED "STATES 'PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW A. SMITH, OF I^IOTOHKISS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM R. GALE, OF DELTA, COLORADO.
' B'OB-SLED.
SPECIFICATION forming pari'.` of Letters Patent No. 549,402, dated November 5, 1895.
Application filed June 8, 1895. Serial No. 552,072. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known `that I, ANDREW A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hotchkiss, Delta-county, Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bob Sleds, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a perspective of the bob-sled.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the front sled.V
Figs. 3 and 4 are details.
The invention relates to that lclass of sleds or sleighs known as bob-sleds.
l The object of the invention is to provide a sled of this description which shall be simple, strong, and durable.
The invention will first be described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A is the front sled, B the rear sled, and C is the reach, vwhich connects them adjustably. The front andrear sleds are constructed alike and each consists in the transverse beam D, provided at its ends with depending knees D', formed with a horizontal top cross-piece d, bolted to the under side of beam D, from the ends of which depend the side bars d' d', which converge toward their lower apertured ends, while from the front and Arear edges of this cross-bar d extend the curved guides or guards d2, having a pair'of side flanges o r ears d3 at both ends.
E are the runners, formed of the flat steel shoes E', curved upwardly at their forward ends and having wooden braces E2 on their upper sides. Each runner E is provided with a curved or segmental standard F, bolted at its ends thereto and having a perpendicular middle portion or brace F', formed at its lower end with a foot F2, bolted to the runner in a cut-away portion e2 of the brace E2. The upper side of the brace E2 is rounding, and the ends of the standards F are provided with concave feet f, which rest upon the curved faces of the braces E2 and are bolted to the runners. The knees D' straddle ythe curved standards F and are pivoted at their lower rounded ends by pivots f' to the lower end of the braces F', said lower rounded ends resting on the upper sides of the feet F2, so
5o that the whole weight of the load will be carried by the knees and not strain the pivots f'. These pivots f' form the axes of the runners, and the curved standards and guards or guides d2 are concentric therewith.
G are braces bolted to the beams D and to the forward ends of the guards d2 to hold them rigidly in position, and thereby stay the standards F and the runners against all lateral or twisting movement. f
The middle portions or braces F' of the curved standards F are each formed of parallel plates bolted at their upper ends to the sides of the standards and bent outward at their lower ends to form the foot F2; but said middle portion or brace F' may, if desired, be integral with the standard F.
The knees D' are each provided with a pair of ears d4 on their forward edges, and to the inner ears 67,4 of the rear knees are pivoted the rear ends of a pair of braces H II, the forward ends of which are pivoted to the ends of a tubular slide I, which slides freely on the reach C, the reach being provided with a longitudinal series of apertures c, through which aperture in the top and bottom of the slide a pin i may be passed. The beam D of the rear sled carries a double nshape clip J, which straddles it and extends below it a sufficient distance to permit the `reach to pass through it and rest on its lower front and rear cross-bars j j. A pin K passes through an aperture in the middleof said rear beam and through any one of 'the apertures o. Thus by removing pins 1f K the rear sled may be adjusted longitudinally along the reach to bring it into proper relation to the front sled. All mortising of the rear beam D is thus obviated by the use of the clip J.
The front end of the reach O extends under the beam D of the front sled and is there pro* vided with a draft-clevis L, which is formed of a plate bent upon itself and embracing the upper and lower sides of the said front end of the reach with its apertured rear ends. The upper side of the said front beamvD is provided with an apertured wear-plate d, over which extends the front apertured end of the brace C', which is bolted atlits rear Aend to the upper side ofthe reach C. A
IOO
king-bolt L passes down through the front bolster M, the brace C, plate d, clip L, and reach C and forms the axis onv which the front sled turns horizontally. No rear bolster is necessary with my improved bob-sled. The bolster )I and the rear beam D are provided with any form of standards 711 forholding the load in place.
N is a curved brace pivoted er bolted at its middle between the two sides of the clevis L and at its ends pivoted or bolted to the inner ears d* of the front bolsters D.
O is the tongue, pivoted at its rear end to the front end of the clevis L and provided with the usual draft attaclnnents.
O are two braces, secured at their forward ends to the tongue and at their rear ends pivotally connected to the ears ny on the brace N between its middle and ends.
rlhe operation and uses will be readily understood from the foregoing description.
It will be seen that as the knees D are each provided with two ears d* any knee will answer for either end of the beams D; also, that the upper sides of the beams D are wholly free from any projecting portions of the runner mechanism, as every part thereof is beneath the beams.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. The combination with the front and rear sleds, having cross-bars provided with depending knees to which the runners are pivoted, of a reach extending under both beams and pivoted by a king bolt to the front beam, a double clip embracing the rear beam and extending down below its under side and embracing the reach with its sides or ends and lower cross-bars, and a pin passed through the rear beam and any one of a series of apertures in the reach and between the front and rear cross bars of the clip and braces extending forwardly from the rear knees to a slide mounted adjustably on the reach, substantially as set forth.
2. In a bob-sled., the knee comprising a top cross bar adapted to be bolted to the under side of the beam, side arms depending therefrom and converging toward their lower transversely apertured ends and the integral guards or guides (l2 d3 projecting from the front and rear of the upper end of the knee and forming slideways for a curved runner standard, substantially as set forth.
In a bob-sled, the knee comprising a top cross bar adapted to be bolted to the under side of the beam, side arms depending therefrom, and converging toward their lower apertured rounded ends, the front and rear guards or guides integral with the upper end of knee and the apertured ears on forward edges of the side arms, substantially as set forth.
l. The combination with the beam-knee having depending side arms converging at their lower apertured ends, and the integral oppositely projecting guards or guides at the upper end, of the segmental runner-standards working between said side-arms and guided in said guards or guides; the said standards being provided with a middle portion to which the lower ends of the said kneearms are pivoted, substantially as set forth.

(5. The combination with the runner having a segmental or curved standard of the beam-knee having side arms and integral oppositel y projecting guards straddlin g the said standard and pivotally connected at the lower ends of the side arms with the runner between the ends of the standard; the lower rounding ends of said side arms resting upon the upper side of the runner or an attachment thereof to take the strain oft oi.' the pivot, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination with the beam and the depending knees secured at their upper ends to the lower side of its ends; said knees each comprising depending side arms havin g apertured rounded lower ends and the integral oppositely projecting guards or guides at the upper end of the knees, of the runners, each having a segmental standard working between the knee arms beneath the beam and provided with a middle portion or brace having a foot at its lower end secured to the runner the lower rounded ends of the knee being pivoted to the lower end of said middle portion or brace and rocking on said foot, substantially as set forth.

substantially as set forth.
l0. The combination with the front and rear sleds and a reach extending from the rear sled and pivoted to the Cross bar of the front sled and there provided With a clip, of the rigid brace connected at its middle to the said clip and at its ends to the knees of the front sled, and the tongue pivoted at its rear end to the front end of the clip, substantially as set forth.
