Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER B. GwA'rI-r- MEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in jB gklyn, Kings county, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement i Fgiding' ig-Carts, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates especially to the construction and arrangement of infants carr ag' s. and has for its object the provision of a simple, cheap, and effective folding carriage or ga -cert which when folded will be very compa t, occupying u tt space, and be r ad ly carrier in the hand.

To attain the desired end, my invention consists in certain novel and useful combinations or arrangements of parts and peculiarities of construction and operation, all of which will be hereinafter first fully described and then pointed out in the claims.

'13 represents runners movably mounted upon the handles and arranged to hold the two portions rigidly in line when extended, as in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

14 is a cross-bar connecting the extremities of the handles.

Secured to the back 7 at each side are hooks 15, which engage and rigidly hold in place rear axle-pieces of the vehicle when extended for use. This rear axle consists of a fixed portion or portions 16, secured to the under side of the seat or body 1, and extension portions or parts 17, hinged at 19 and bearing the rear wheels 18.

The vehicle being constructed and arranged and the parts extended as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings is ready for use, the parts being firmly and rigidly held in place. It being desired'to fold or collapse the vehicle the braces 6 are turned as particularly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings and the foot-rest folded back beneath the seat. The braces 9 are nowturned upward and the back 7 folded down upon the top of the seat and therunners l3 moved from above the hinges 12 in the handles. permitting the parts 11 to be turned back, as in Figs. 3 and 4% of the drawings. The folding of the back 7 upon the seat or body releases the hooks 15 from engagement with the axle extensions 17, permitting the said extensions to be turned at right angles to the fixed portion of the axle, bringing the wheels 18 beneath the seat 1.

I do not confine myself to the exact mechanical construction of the parts shown, as such parts y be ornamented and varied in shape without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having now fully described my invention, What I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A folding go-eart in which are comprised a body 1, a footrest hinged to the front portion thereof, a back hinged to the rear thereof, axle-sections 16 rigidly secured directly to the body, folding axle-sections bearing supporting-wheels hinged to the said axlesections 16 and arranged when extended to constitute lateral extensions thereof substantially in line therewith, and means for holding the pivoted axle extensions in their extended positions, substantially as setforth.

2. In a vehicle of the character described, the combination of a body, a pair of front Wheels, a frame hinged to the body carrying the front wheels and arranged to be folded close to the body, and an axle for the rear wheel comprising axle-sections fixedly con nected directly with the body, and wheel-carrying extensions hinged to the fixed sections, whereby the wheels are arranged to be folded close against and substantially parallel with the body, and means for holding the parts of the axle in extended position, substantially as set forth.

3. In a vehicle of the character herein specified, the combination with the hinged axle extensions, of the hinged back, and the hooks rigidly secured to the back and arranged to engage with the hinged axle extensions and hold them in extended positions for use, substantially as shown and described.

4:. In a vehicle of the character herein specified, the combination with the seat, of.the axle extensions hinged thereto; wheels mounted upon said axle extensions and arranged to be folded under the seat and substantially parallel therewith; a back hinged to the seat and arranged to be folded down above the same; a folding handle hinged to the back, means for holding the said parts in an extended position, and a foot-rest hinged to the seat-frame and carrying the front wheels, and arranged to be folded under the seat-frame, substantially as set forth.
