ROBERT MEYER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
STOCKINGQ SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,184, dated May 3, 1904.
Application led February 4, 1904:.
To all Lohan/t t may concern:
Be it known that LROBEET MEYER,a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stockings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hosiery, and has for its object to provide a stocking having a portion of its foot formed of white or undyed yarn and having its leg portion dyed any olesired color, said effect being produced after the stocking has been knit in one color. Heretofore stockings have been produced having this contrasted foot-and-leg effect, known as split-sole and white-foot stockings; but the same have been produced by forming or knitting' the stockings of yarns of the two different colors, a method of manufacture considerably more expensive than that of knitting the stockings of yarn of one color, and it is to obviate this enhanced cost and to produce stockings of the cheaper grades having the split-sole or white-foot effect that my invention is directed. rlhis object I accomplish in the manner and bythe means hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing', in which the iigure is a view of a stocking embodying my invention.
The said stocking is first knit from yarn of one color, preferably white or undyed yarn, and then has that portion of its foot l that it is desired to retain in the original color inclosed in any suitable protecting device-such as a clamp that will exclude moisture. The stocking so protected is then subjected to the action of the dye that it is desired to color the leg portion 2, whereby said leg portion and, in
Serial No. 192,381. (No model.)
fact, all the unprotected portion of the same 'will receive the dye, only that portion protected by the clamp remaining unaiected.
It will be readily understood that whereas in a stocking formed with a white foot or split sole by knitting the same of yarns of different colors the line of demarcation between the colors must follow the wale of stitch of the fabric. A stocking dyed in the abovedescribed manner, on the other hand, will present no such characteristic, the line of the dye 3 following the edge of the clamping device irrespective of the Wale of stitch.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A stocking having its leg portion and the upper portion of its foot dyed, and the rest of its foot of contrasting color, the line between the two portions being independent of the Wale of the stitch of the fabric.
2. A stocking having its leg portion and the upper portion of its foot dyed, and the rest of its foot undyed, the line between the two portions being independent of the wale of the stitch of the fabric.
3. A stocking knitted of yarn of one color, and having its leg portion and the upper portion of its `foot dyed, and the rest of its foot of contrasting' color, the line between the two portions being independent of the Wale of the stitch of the fabric.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 759,184, granted May 3, 1904,
upon the application of Robert Meyer, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for an improveu ment in Stookings, errors appear in the printed specification requiring correction,
as follows: In line 48, a comma should be substituted for the period after the Word fabric and the following article A should be a small a, instead of a Capital and that the said Letters Patent should be read with these corrections therein that the same may conform to the record of the ease in the Patent Oiiioe.
Signed and sealed this 10th day of May, A. D., 1904.
[SEAL] E. B. MOORE,
Acting Commissioner of Patents.
