SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,097, dated May 3, 1904. Application filed December 21, 1903. Serial No. 186,018. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. GERNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Vandergrift, in the county of l vestnioreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lee-Cream Freezers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in ice-cream freezers, and relates more particularly to a continuous icecream freezer of the type shown and described in Patent No. 749,286, granted to me J anuary 12, 1904:.
The object of the present invention is to provide novel means for the ready removal of the dasher from the freezer-can when desired, to provide novel means for the supporting of the freezer-can at its outer'end, to provide novel means for elevating one end of the freezer-can, and generally to simplify and make more perfect the working of a freezer of the type described. These objects I accomplish in the manner and by the combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvements applied to the freezing-agent tub, the latter being broken away. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View showing in dotted lines the position of the parts when one end of the can is elevated to permit its removal from the freezing-agent tub. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional side elevation showing in dotted lines how the can is elevated. Fig. i is a detail sectional view of the swivel-joint of the lock-rod.
.lln my prior patent above referred to I show the freezing-agent tub as provided with a hinged portion in its one end, whereby when the end of the freezer-can that is attached to the dasher-head is disconnected therefrom and the hinged end of the freezer-tub swung downwardly the freezer-can may be elevated at its rear end and the dasher removed for cleaningor other purposes. The present invention relates to improved means whereby the can is simultaneously elevated at its one end as the other end is lowered or swung donuiward.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates the freezing-agent tub, which may be of any preferred or desired form of construction, and in the end 2 of this tub is a central opening 3, through which the discharge tube or end l of the freezer-can 5 extends, this can having the funnel-shaped portion 6, for a purpose as clearly shown and described in my prior patent referred to above. The end 2 is provided on its outer face surrounding the opening 3 with a circular recess 7 to receive a circular boss 8, carried on the inner face of a closure-disk 9, centrally apcrtured to receive the tube or discharge end a of the freezer-can therethrough. Secured to this disk 9 is a stufling-box 10 of any desired or approved form to prevent leakage. Affixed securely to the end 2 of the tub at opposite sides of the disk 9 are guides 11, pro= vided in their two side faces with slots 12 and in their upper face with a slot 14. In these gu ides 11 are bearing-pieces 15, each of which carries a pin '16, extending through the top slot 14: and retaining the slide in position, the said bearing-pieces or slides being engaged at their outer ends by screws 1'7, operating in the ends of the guides, said screws having suitable hand-wheels or handles for operating the same. The inner ends of these slides or bearing-pieces are adapted to engage with locking-rods 18, which pass through the slots in the sides of the guides and connect with opposite sides of the disk 9. These locking-rods have loops or eyes 18, swivelly connected to their outer ends, as shown in detail in Fig. i, and. operating through the oblong eyes 18 are throwingrods .19, connected to cranks 19, carried on the ends of a shaft or rod 20, journaled in the walls of the tub I underneath the freezer-can, the shaft or rod 20 being provided intermediate its ends with a bell-crank 21, adapted to be brought into engagement with the can 5 to lift the latter. The throwing-rods 19 pass through keepers 22, secured to the sides of the tub 1, and these rods are provided with inclinedteeth 23 to engage with the keepers merely to hold the rods against movement after the slides 15 have been loosened and until a slight pull is exerted on the throwing rods. At their outer ends the throwing-rods 19 carry handles 20, by means of which the rods may be operated either by hand or as the rods 18 are moved back they will engage the handles 20 and operate the rods 19.
The tightening of the slides 15 against the throwing-rods is ordinarily allthe fastening that is required; but to lock the same securely and prevent accidental displacement of the closure-disk 9 I provide a yoke 24, the two vertical arms of which are provided with bends 25 to receive the locking-rods 18. The lower ends of these vertical arms of the yoke are pivoted in brackets or lugs 26, attached to the end 2 of the tub, and the upper end of the yoke is provided with two vertical arms 27, which receive between them a bolt 28, swivelly or pivotally connected to the tub end 2 and on which bolt or screw is a winged nut 29, which is turned crosswise of the arms 27, as seen in Fig. 1, in order to hold the yoke in the closed position.
To release the yoke, the nut 29 may be unscrewed and bolt or screw 28 lifted up, so as to clear the arms 27 and allow the yoke 2 to swing downward.
In operation the freezer-can 5 is revolved, so as to unscrew and disconnect its rear end from the dasher-head, (not shown,) and the can shifted forward in the tub. Vinged nut 29 is then turned, so as to permit the yoke 24: to
be swung downward, and screws 17 turned out, so as to allow slides 15 to be moved out away from the rods 18, at which time the latter, together with the closure-disk 9, may be moved outward from the tub and disk 9 inclined, as seen in Fig. 3. The outward pull of the throwing-rods actuates shaft or rod 20, causing bell-crank 21 to elevate rear end of the freezer-can, so as to permit the ready removal of the dasher from the can.
It will be 0 bvious that various slight changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with the tub having an opening in its end, and a freezer-can having its discharge end extending through said opening, of a closure-disk mounted on the discharge end of the can and sealing the opening around said discharge end of said can, and means connected to said disk for raising the rear end of the can as the disk is moved away from the tub.
2. The combination with the tub having an opening in its end, and a freezer-can having its discharge end extending through said opening, of a sealing means for the opening around the discharge end of the can, and means connected to the sealing means for elevating the rear end of the can as the sealing means is moved away from the tub.
3. The combination with the tub, and the freezer-can having its one end extended through the tub, of a shaft journaled in the tub, and means connected to said shaft to actuate the same and elevate the rear end of the can simultaneously with the swinging downward of the forward end thereof.
1. The combination with the tub, and the freezer-can mounted therein and having its one end extending through the end of the tub, of a shaft journaled in the tub underneath the can, and provided with a bell-crank, a closuredisk mounted on the end of the can extending through the tub, and throwing-rods connected to said disk and to the shaft, as and for the purpose described.
5. The combination with the tub, and the can mounted therein with its discharge end extending through one end of the tub, of a shaft journaled in the tub, and having means adapted when the shaft is rotated to engage the can to elevate the same, throwing-rods connected at one end to the ends of said shaft, and having handles on their opposite ends, locking-rodshaving eyes to receive the throwing-rods, and means for securing the lockingrods in the locked position.
6. The combination with the tub, and the can mounted therein, of can-elevating means comprisinga shaft journaled in the tub, means carried by the shaft for engagement with the can when the shaft is rotated, throwing-rods connected at one end to the ends of the shaft, locking-rods having'eyes to receive said throwing-rods, guides carried by the tub through which the locking-rods extend and means carried by said guides for securing the lockingrods.
7. The combination with the tub having an opening in its one end, and a can mounted within the tub with its discharge end extending through said opening, of a closure-disk on said discharge end of the can, a shaftjournaled in the tub, cranks on the ends of said shaft, means carried by said shaft for engagement with the can, throwing-rods connected to said cranks and to the disk, guides receiv ing said throwing-rods, and a yoke pivoted to the end of said tub and engaging said rods to hold them in the locked position.
