PATENT OFFICE.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,086, dated May 3, 1904.
Application filed January 5, 1904.
To all, whom, it may) concern.-
Be it knownthat I, WILs FLETCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clinton, in the parish of East Felicana and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to beafull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to plows, and particularly to a plow having a pivoted cross-beam from which are hung adjustable cultivator hangers.
The object of the invention is to provide a plow having a cross-beam pivoted to the central beam and provided with slots in which are adjustably secured the stems of cultivators, peculiar-shaped cultivator-hangers, and novel brace-rods between the plow-handles and the cross-beam.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the several parts, and especially in the pivoted cross-beam, peculiar shape of the cultivator-hangers, and the rods having eyes to hold the cross-beam in various positions.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, Figure 1 is a top view of the plow. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the cultivator-hangers. Fig. 4 is a crosssection of one of the hangers. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one end of the cross-beam and one of the brace-rods, showing the springlock. 7
The same numeral references denote the parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
The plow-beam 1 has the usual handles 2 and clevis 3. The cross-beam 1 is pivotally secured to and under the beam 1 by a bolt 5 and is provided with slots 6, in which the screw-stems? of the hangers 8 are adjustably secured. The hangers have a heel 9 and side flange 10 inclined from the flat side 11 to form front and side edges 12 and 13, respectively, which terminate in a head 14, from which the stems 7project. Any character of cultivators Serial No. 187,835. (No model.)
may be secured to the hangers, according to the work desired to perform.
The cross-beam 1 is connected to the plowhandles by brace or connecting rods or bars 15, pivoted at 16 to the plow handles and provided with a series of eyes 17 to [it a pin 18 on each end of the cross-beam, so to follow said beam in its various adjustments, the pivot 16 permitting the bars to be swung free of the cross-beam during its adjustment.
Upon each end of the cross-beam adjacent to the pins 18 is fixed a fastening for holding the bars on the pins, and consists of a hinge one member, 19, of which has a plate-spring 20 extending over the hinge-joint and bearing on the other hinge member, 21, the latter being provided with a U-shaped slot 22, working over the pins 18 and having a fingergrasp 23.
It is obvious that the hangers may be turned or reversed and the space between them varied by sliding their stems in the beam-slots, that the hangers may be positioned one in advance of the other by turning the cross-beam so that it will stand in a diagonal position, and that in whatever position the cross-beam is placed the brace-bars will hold it there.
It will be further observed that the fastening or look for the braces will permit them to be swung outwardly when such fastening is unlocked, so as to allow the cross-beam to be turned, and when locked the braces are fixed to their pins and hold said beam in what ever position it may have been placed.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a plow, the combination, with a crossbeam pivoted to the main beam of the plow, the pins projecting from the ends of the crossbeam, and the braces pivoted to the plowhandles, of a fastening secured to each end of the cross-beam to overlap the braces and engage the pins and lock the braces tosaid beam.
2. In aplow, the combination, with the pivoted cross-beam having end pins, and the braces carried by the plow-handles and having eyes to engage the pins, of a fastening Intestimony WhereofI affix my signature in comprlsmga hinge one member of which has presence of two Witnesses.
a slot to engage the pins, and the other memher being attached to the beam, and a spring l WILS FLETCHER Witnesses:
B. GRAY, JOHN X. JACKSON.
to control the movement of the hinge so as lock the braces to the beam and permit them to be detached therefrom.
