CORPORATION OF VERMONT.
CHARGING-SCALE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,016, dated. May 3, 1904.
Application filed September 16, 1903. Serial No. 173,432. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT WAYNE ROMIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Charging-Scales, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in weighing-scales, and particularly to scales for use in weighing the ingredients in charging stock-furnaces. A
As. ordinarily constructed, scales for charging stock-furnaces are provided with a plurality of scale-beams, one for each ingredient to be used in charging, the poise on each beam being set to the proper graduation on the beam, the particular beam that is required for each ingredient being thrown into operation by the operator as required. Such devices are open to objection by reason of the number of beams required, which of course tends to complexity of construction, and they also take up considerable room.
The object of the present invention is to provide a scale for accomplishing the same work in which only a single beam is used, thus doing away with the objectionable complex features of the usual arrangements.
The invention therefore consists of a charging-scale having a single beam with a series of blocks arranged thereon and a movable poise adapted to engage the blocks successively.
The invention further consists .of a charging-scale having a single beam with a series of blocks adjustable thereon to be set at different positions along the beam and a movable poise adapted to-engage the blocks successively.
The invention also consists in the various details of construction and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter described, and referred to in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a scale embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar View illustrating only a portion of the beam, the poise, and "a slightly-different character of adjustable block. Fig. 3 represents in detail the block, the means for securing the block, and the poise pawl or catch. Fig. A is a cross-section of Fig. 1-, showing also the key for locking and unlocking the block. Fig. 5 illustrates an arrangement by which the block may be graduated as a Vernier for giving finer readings.
In the drawings, a represents the poise-slide movable upon the beam 6, the rollers 1 of which poise-slide travel in ways on top of the beam.
Notched blocks are represented at c, which are perforated, as at 2, to allow the passage therethrough of the bolt (2, which passes through the central longitudinal slot 3 in the beam 6, being held by a nut g, which fits in a recess in the rear face of the beam. The head of the bolt 0 is provided with two openings in which fit the projections on the key f, by means of which the bolt is tightened and loosened to allow a block 0 to be moved to any desired position and there secured.
I do not wish to be restricted to the precise means herein shown for effecting the adjustment of the blocks, as any convenient means may be devised for accomplishing this object.
In Fig. 1 the top face of the beam is shown as ungraduated, and the blocks each have a notch, while in Fig. 2 the top of the beam is notched and the top of the block (.7 is notched to correspond therewith. In Fig 2 also the adjustable block is beveled toward the left at its lower end, so as to be set on the graduations from the left-hand side of the block rather than from the graduations on the front of the block. A spring-pawl with a hand-lever CZ is arranged on the poise-slide to engage the notches in the blocks or the notches in the beam alone if it is desired to use the beam for ordinary weighing.
In Fig. 5 is illustrated an arrangement in which the block can be graduated as a Vernier 'for the purpose of giving finer graduations.
In operation the notched blocks one for l and a poise movable thereon, said beam being each ingrediei'it, are set at the desired point on the scalebeam, and the poise isfirst moved to engage the notched block representing the number of units of the first ingredient used. \Vhen it balances, it is moved to the block representing the total amount of the first two ingredients, and so on.
Various minor modifications and changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A charging scale having a single beam and a poise sliding thereon, blocks adjustable longitudinally of the said beam and adapted to be engaged by said poise, said beam being provided with suitable graduations arranged to register with the blocks.
2. A charging scale having a single beam provided with a longitudinal slot, notched blocks, each having an opening and a bolt passing through said opening and the slot in the beam, and a nut fitting said bolt, substantially as described.
3. A chargingscale having a single beam and a poise movable thereon, saidbeal'n being provided with a longitudinal slot, notched blocks, each having an opening and a bolt passing through said opening and the slot in the beam, andanut fitting said bolt, said poise having a pivoted catch to engage the notches in the blocks.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT \VAYNE ROMIG.
