UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A, BLODGETT, OF ST. JO-IINSBURY, VERIYIONT, ASSIGNOR TO E. AND '1. FAIRBANKS AND COMBANY, OF ST. JOHNSBURY, VERMONT, A CORPORATION OF VERMONT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 21, 1916.
Application filed May 17, 1915. Serial No. 28,749.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. BLODGETT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at St. J ohnsbury, in the county of Caledonia and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Registering Mechanism for Scale- Beams, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to type-registering.
scale beams, and comprises the novel construction as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a cross section through a scale beam and registering poise of my improved construction; Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof; Fig. 8 is a perspective view with some of the parts removed; and Fig. 4 is a cross-section showing the scale in a different position.
A is the main scale beam, having graduations thereon for large denominations, such for instance as thousands of pounds; B is the main poise adjustable upon the beam A; C is an auxiliary poise adjustable upon the main poise; and D is a graduated scale upon the main poise, cooperating with an index E upon the auxiliary poise for indicating the fractional weights intermediate the large denominations.
The type-registering mechanism comprises a series of type characters F on the lower edge of the main scale beam and a second series of type G on the lower edge of the auxiliary poise, which latter is in the form of a bar slidably adjustable in guides H. This bar is preferably provided with a rack face I meshing with a pinion J which may be revolved by a knob K to set the auxiliary poise in proper position.
L is a platen for pressing a ticket against the type to take an impression therefrom.
M is an adjustable handle for actuating the platen L, and N is a handle stationary upon the main poise adjacent to the handle M, forming a pistol grip.
As the accuracy of the registration depends upon the exact location of the platen in relation to the poise, I have devised a construction in which said platen is guided by an integral portion of said poise. This comprises a lug O integral with the back plate P of the main poise and projecting forward therefrom. Q is a slot accurately machined in this lug 0, so as to form a ,,against the type.
guide for the platen. R- is a recess in the lug for recelving a spring S sleeved upon the shank T of the platen, and operating to draw the same downward or away from the type on the beam and poise. The lower end of the shank T extends in proximity to a finger U on the handle M, so that when said handle is grasped in connection with the stationary handle N and drawn forward, the shank will be forced upward, pressing the platen The ticket for receiving the impression is inserted through a slot V in the front plate W of the poise, and the arrangement is such that a portion of this ticket is beneath the auxiliary poise bar C, and the other portion below the lower edge of the main beam. Thus after both main and auxiliary poises are practically set, the operator by inserting a ticket and grasping the handles M and N will register the weightupon said ticket. The handle N is provided with a plate N which is bolted or otherwise secured to the lug O and forms a retainer for the platen. The pivoted handle M is preferably secured to a bracket M, which is bolted or otherwise secured to the lower edge of the back plate P on the main poise.
One of the principal advantages of the construction just described is that after the scale is once sealed, there is nothing in the construction of the registering mechanism to change, whereas with constructions that have heretofore been used, in which the registerlng mechanism is attachable to the poise, there is always danger of some change interfering with its accuracy.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. In a type-registering scale beam, the combination with the adjustable poise, of a recessed lug integral with said poise, a platen guided in the recess of said lug, a spring in said recess for retracting said platen, a stationary handle having a securing plate forming the closure for the recess in said lug, and an operating handle pivoted to said poise adjacent to said stationary handle and provided with a finger operatively engaging said platen.
2. In a type-registering scale beam, the combination with the adjustable poise, of a recessed and slotted lug projecting from said poise and integral therewith, a platen guided in the slot in said recessed lug and having a shank extending through the recess, a spring sleeved on said shank within said recess, a handle having a securing plateattached to the face of said recessed lug, forming a closure for said recess, a rockable handle, a supporting bracket for said rockable handle secured to the lower edge of said poise, and a finger on said rockable handle for engaging the shank of said platen to press the same'upward against the tension of said spring.
3. In a type-registering scale beam, the combination With the adjustable poise, of guides on said poise for a relatively-adjustable auxiliary poise, a main beam on which said main poise is adjustable, type characters on said main beam and auxiliary poise, a recessed end slotted lug integral with said poise projecting therefrom, a platen guided in the slot'in said lug and having a shank Copies of this patent may be obtained for projecting through said recess, a spring on said shank Within said recess, a stationary handle secured to said lug and provided With a securing plate forming a closure for said recess, a rock-able handle, a bracket for pivotally connecting said rockable handle to said main poise, and a finger on said rockable handle for engaging said shank to press said platen against the type on said main beam and auxiliary poise, against the tension of said spring. r
In testimony whereof I aii'ix my signature in presence of tWo witnesses.
CHARLES A. BLODGETT.
