PATENT OFFICE.
MORDEO AI H. FLETCHER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
I p v I I BOX FOR CONTAINING TOOTH-POWDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 758,309, dated April 26, 1904. Application liled $eptemher 18, 1903; Serial No. 1'73 ,699. (No model.)
To aIZZ whmn it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, MoRnnoAI H. FLETCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boxes for Containing Tooth- Powder, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boxes for holding and out of which may be taken tooth-powder, face-powder, or the like material to be used in small quantities upon occasion, its object being to provide a package that shall be perfectly secure and tight against leakage and protect the contents from moisture, at the same time provided with means convenient of operation for discharging small quantities as required from time to time.
In a previous patent granted to me I describe a package consisting of a cylindrical boX hav ing a suitably-perforated cover with a concentric registerwalve operating in connection therewith and having an intervening pad or disk of materialsuch, for example, as blotting-paper, cloth, &c.attached to the inside of the cover and correspondingly perforated,
over which the disk valve or register-plate was rotated. In the practical working of this device a difficulty has been experienced in scour ing the packing-pad against rotation. under the pressure and friction of the rotating valve, so that at times a partial rotation of the pad carries the pad out of register with the aperture of the cover and of the valve, thus disarranging the parts and preventing the proper operation of the valve.
My present invention for this condition; and it consists in a sheet packing interposed looselythat is, without being cemented or otherwise fastened to the coverand a valve provided with catch-points which engage the sheet packing and rotate it with the valve, with its aperture in constant registering relation with the valve and brought into registering relation with the aperture of the cover only as the valve is brought into such relation.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichv Figure 1 is an axial section, in elevation, of
furnishes a remedy the part of the box containing my improve ment. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are under plan views of the register-valve, packing-disk, and boxcover, respectively; Fig. 5, a perspective view of the valve, showing the preferred arrangement of the catch-points for engaging the packing-disk; and Fig. 6, a detail section of the valve and packing-disk, showing the mode in which the catch-points of the valve are embedded in the packing-disk in use.
Referring now to the drawings, A designates the cylindrical box or package, (shown partially in Fig. 1,) and B thecylindrical cover fitting over one end of the box. outside.
The cover B is pierced centrally, as at 0, for the admission of the cylindrical shank or stem 6 of the knob E, attached to the disk valve, presently to be described, and also perforated, as at O, at one side of the central perforation' 0 for the discharge of the contents upon occasion, Fig. 4.
Immediately within and adjacent to the inner side of the cover is placed a cylindrical pad C, fitting just within the cylindrical wall of the cover circumferentially and perforated correspondingly with the top of the cover B, Fig. 3. Adjacent to the pad is placed a disk valve I) of the same diameter as the pad and also correspondingly perforated atO 0' Fig. 2.
The disk valve D is also provided at radial intervals with tongues (Z, punched from its own material and thrown out on one side at more of the contents from spilling out or any foreign substance from entering the package. I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a package of the character indicated, the combination of the centrally-perforated cover, centrally-perforated packing-disk, centrallyperforated valve-disk With tongues thrown out on one side at opposite angles and adapted to rotatively engage the pad, in combination with a spindle having a terminal knob and shoulder, and inserted through the box-cover, the packing-disk and the valve-disk, and secured to the latter, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- I0 nesses.
MORDEOAI H. FLETCHER.
